If you are looking for street walkers it is best to read forum to find where they hang out. Not much of a street scene compared to other countries and approaching random women in the street may get you into trouble.

Having said the above if you are in locales where street girls are you may well be approached but beware of all the scams (read up on scams) best way is to contact local services such as kitty and others mentioned on this site and arrange a visit to your hotel or there place.

You will not have a security service tail but some con artists may show an interest in you, beware scams.

Be careful with Chinese dating websites. Since you have been to China a lot you know that China is full of scammers. I tried a dating site several years ago that I forget the name of. Before I sent any money realized it was all a fraud. Best way to find out if the site is legit is to have the lady contact your Wechat account and continue the conversation there. If you don't have Wechat, get an account. Everyone in China has one.

Yes, give her a red envelope for CNY. I normally give 500 RMB to my lovers in China. But then I do not live in China and do not provide regular support. Your generosity will be rewarded. The money will help counterbalance all the red envelopes she will have to send out to family. Most Chinese women I know do not get many red envelopes, but are expected to send out a lot.

Sound advice, also occasional gifts during the year. Not regular, just every now and then, things like pink teddy bears etc. Girls appreciate the effort.

It is better to give than to make a mistake by not giving one. Use crisp new bill or bills that total even number. Not 4's in it. Ie 4, 40,44, 400. It is good luck money.

I think it depends on how she views the relationship. If you are just a client to her than no I would not think she would expect a red envelope from you. But if she has romantic thoughts toward you then yes she would expect a red envelope. If you are unsure and you walk with her in public does she grab your hand or arm?

I. E. If I visited a village in north-western China, and really immersed myself in the local culture, would the women there be receptive to flirting?

Away from the village you would have a chance, but in the village with her friends and family, very hard to do. As far as "passable" Chinese I am assuming you are talking about Mandarin. In many villages around China they will be speaking the local dialect. Sure most of the young people would be able to speak Mandarin, but to "immerse yourself in the culture you would have to learn the local dialect. Also, you would have to overcome a lot of bias against outsiders, if you ever could. Also understand that only certain hotels can allow foreigners to stay in them and many hotels in rural Chinese villages are not equipped for that.

Depends how rural. The more rural the more you need to speak chinese and immerse yourself in local culture / help out etc to do it. Basically showing you care and support etc.

These girls are busy helping out the family to make more income.

If it's rural as in 2nd or 3rd tier city then you need to have some dating game / flirtation etc.

First tier cities girls likely won't even look at you at the current state of affairs with rampant patriotism, wealth and propaganda usually the better off girls tend to not be into foreigners.
