The last time I visited I tried the following and had some very good results.

You go to any average looking massage shop. At each shop there there will be a range of offerings, from cheapest to the most expensive. They will all be in Chinese characters and so you won't know what any of the options are. You don't know any Chinese and so you can't ask what the different offerings are. I generally pick one of the more expensive ones by pointing at it. It's usually 888 RMB or something similar.

From there, you are led by one of the staff into a room with a big bed and just hope for the best from there. Generally you are asked to provide another tip, often about 100 RMB. You just let the lady instruct you from there.

She'll show you where to lie and when to shower. She'll probably hand you some paper undies and you'll put them on. My rule is to just behave and do as I'm told.
