After having a good time with blackjack in haikou I must warn you. The last month it happened some times Chinese guys start fighting with foreigners in the bars.

Even I had problems after visting the seaclub in haikou. There was one Chinese guy start to fight with me, to be sure he had 5 friends behind him to help him in case of fighting. I was lucky my brother the taxi driver arrived in time and suddenly we were me and 10 taxi drivers against this asseholes. Who pissed imageitly.

But I know the last 3 month 3 foreigners was beaten up after visiting bars in haikou. The last one was of a very good friend of mine and they beat him nearly to death.

Two Chinese guys started to make trouble with him in the 66 bar. He wanted to go home they followed him and out outside there was waiting 3 more guys waiting him with iron tubes. Even the doorman hit on him withj the other 5 Chinese guys.

This friend of mine lives in haikou more then a year, he is absolutly no trouble making guy.

He works together with well known Chinese men.

There is a kind of rassism in hainan. It s really bad. I thought hainan would be haven for me, but after what I heard and what I saw, I will not return.

I'm glad to hear that you are having a good time. I agree with you that in Shanghai you'll run into a lot of unfriendly and even very rude people. However it is a huge city and like all huge cities, you'll always find all types of people.
For every handful of unfriendly people, there is also a handful of friendly ones just like the people you've met in Haikou.

I think if somebody is looking for pure sex vacation hainan is not the right spot. Sure here is a sex scene like in many other places, in China, but not as big as in shanghai, shenzen or other big towns in China.

But what you can find here are nice spots to relax and very friendly people everywhere.

I have a lot of Chinese friends in my homecountry and I really like them, after 3 weeks in shanghai I was not sure anymore about the Chinese.

I will probably stay here until Sunday.

Yesterday I went out again. I asked my driver to call the girl I met here before and to ask her she likes go drinking again.

I'm certainly getting a lot of rest from mongering here, given the lack of choices. But then again, I haven't really fully explored the city yet, just made the assumption after reading this thread. I do like the city, though being used to living in SH, I don't think I can live in a relatively non-mongering friendly city for a long period of time. Perhaps I'll call your taxi friend next week and he can show me otherwise.

After 2 weeks in Shanghai I m back in Hainan. I really need a rest. Shanghai was really hardcore.

Yesterday I went to my favourite pub, which I left 0.00 a.m. Quite drunken. I was picked up by a young taxidriver, who speaks english quite well.

So I asked him if he like to drive me aound, what he accept. He drove me to another bar, where I hoped to find a freelanc girl I stayed with before, unfortunatly she wasn t there. So I kept on drinking. Around 2 o clock he suggested to show me some places, to find a lady for the night.

So we went to three places, contacting the mamasan there. The girls who were shown to me were from 6-9. I finally dicidede to go with a 21 yo girl from changsa.

Mamasan asked me 600 rmb paying in advance. I refused paying in advance but accept 600 rmb, if the girl stay all night. Maybe little overprized, because it was late allready.

Anyway I went go eating with the taxidriver and the girl, then to my hotel gave the taxidriver 100 rmb, normally his service is worth more, but I think he get tiped also by masmasan. The girl performed great. Great kissing, BBBBj, FS. Next morning gave her 100 extra, so 700 for the girl 100 for the driver. Total damage 800. But great night.

Here are really many of nice girls in haikou. Not so extrem like shanghai girls, but I like them here on haikou better.

I could not give you directions. But, I believe that there are many areas like this in the city. This, in my belief, was just a "neighborhood". This is where THE PEOPLE live, shop, walk, and f**k. These places are just storefronts providing a different set of goods and service than the one next door. That has such strong appeal to me as a traveler; the fact that these places are not for me and are a genuine part of the culture that I came to observe. Of course, I want acceptance there, but I am never angry about not finding it.

In practical terms, in any Chinese city that I have been in, I look for the main streets where the taxis are and plenty of people are walking and there are busy food vendors and shops. Then I look for the alleys. It is there that real lives are lived by the people.

I am a laowai and I do like to get off of the beaten path. Being such has its advantages and disadvantages. I have been given a free meal in Shenzhen perhaps because I was the first laowai to choose this particular restaurant. Being stared at whilst eating does not bother me as long as it is done in a non threatening manner. I have had a girl in Suzhou leave her table of friends, come over and give me her phone number. This has never and is very unlikely to ever happen to me in the west. So I take the good and the bad.

I agree with you 100% that I could make some progress against the pervasive perceptions with some time. This is why I am "an optimist" about Hainan.

I did not have problems getting the right 200 RMB rates in Shenzen, for example. I always RTFF. I knew that I should have been able to get 200 in Hainan and thought that a ripoff price would be 300-400. But I could not live with 600. At the same time, I paid more at the hotel because I would expect the rates to be higher for "convienience" or in this case complete lack of any other options. My philosophy on price is not always about affordability but rather about value and fairness. I pay $80 at that BATS in Qindao, but if I take the time and effort to go to a BBS, I expect to pay only a fraction. It is just fair not to be taken advantage of.

What suprised me was the consistancy from one shop to another in their lack of interest in me. I thought this was more than worry about size, ect.

But I will be back and with better guidance hopefully I can contribute more in the future.

About 6 of the 12 had one gem in the group of 5-8 girls. One that I found early on had 2 stunners and 2 8+ and perhaps 3 not acceptable. I stopped here and with the help of my translator machine and a very drunk young guy who was just getting back with a girl and wanted to be my new best buddy, I tried to make a deal. The quote I got for going to the Sheraton was 600 RMB and one of the stunners and one of the 8s were seemingly very excited to go with me. But negotiations broke down between me and mama. She would not budge one RMB, which after negotiating in China for quite a while, really made me feel weak. If she had gone 50RMB lower, it all would have worked; but instead, I felt I had no choice but to leave.

Like I said this was early on and I though that would have no problem getting what I wanted. What I found though in continuing on through the alley ways, was many shops where the mama and the girls were not the least bit interested in talking to me. One mama screamed at me from her chair until I backed out of the shop. Most shops had one gem mixed with many un passable. Although, looking back, due to the circumstances I was in, perhaps my standards were slipping. I was on my way back towards the “good BBS” that I had failed to make a deal in before, but I was not sure that I was on the right track.

I assume you are a laowai. Your BBS experience is fairly commonplace. The mama tried to rip you off. The takeaway price for ST should have been 150-200RMB; unless you were talking about LT. You did the right thing to walk. Service usually declines when you bargain. You were obviously in a shop with the attitude that foreigners should pay more.

You will always find some girls and even whole shops that are not foreigner friendly. This comes from the perception of huge size and long lasting. It can develop from one girl in the shop that had a bad experience with a laowai and she spoils the whole bunch by telling her story. Or, the mama is like the one you encountered and just has a bug up her ass about foreigners. You just need to accept this downside of China mongering and keep walking.

Having said that, if you manage to monger in a few BBS in the area and eliminate the perception about yourself, you will be more accepted in most of the shops. Good news travels fast.
