For the "TJ is perfectly safe" crowd, just a reminder, four police CHIEFS of TJ have been murdered not far from where we hang out, probably by fellow police officers; e.g.:

"On Feb. 26, 2000 Tijuana's police chief, Alfredo de la Torre, was gunned down as he drove along a busy highway without bodyguards. A previous police chief, Federico Benitez Lopez, was murdered on the same highway in April 1994... Investigators found 102 bullets and 99 shells at the scene of the shooting."

When in TJ, I keep a low profile, show great respect to the police, and feel pretty safe, but it definitely ain't Kansas. If the cops will shoot their own police chief(s), I don't think they would worry much about shooting you or me. For a fun look at TJ cops, rent the movie "TRAFFIC" sometime. The TJ cops are more like an armed gang than a public service, but generally, you can avoid problems with the cops by not getting drunk, not using drugs, not arguing with the club employees or girls, not driving your own car around TJ, and NOT pissing in the alleys. I am curious, has anyone followed all these rules and still had any problems? As shown below, if stopped by the cops, opinions vary as to whether you should offer a bribe, wait for them to suggest one, or call their "bluff". I have heard good arguments for all three approaches. Personally I just offer to pay up. I am not going to take my car into TJ for the time being, but will go back to parking on the US side and take taxis.

Does anyone know if TJ will be happening on Wed night or even Thanksgiving day. Do you know if Mexicans celebrate Thanksgiving. I wouldn't mind eating some muff tacos in TJ during Thanksgiving if you know what I mean.

What do cops make in TJ? I hear it is more like $100 a week or a little higher. Of course there are different levels of cops, from the brown uniformed auxillary cops to the blue uniformed cops in the cars that do carry guns.

By the way the spelling of the bar is Chavelas, not Chevelaz. Not that it really matters.

went down this past thursday for a little r&r before the big turkey week. hooked up with mrspeed and 2 of my buddies. 1 of my buds was making his 1st adventure. it's always great taking a newbie down. their initial mistakes are always a laugh and makes great stories around our gatherings at some water hole.

Dear CHORIZO, I am honored to have my very own cyber-stalker! I did get shook down in TJ, TWICE, recently. I am sorry it offends you that I was in TJ then Rio then back to TJ in three weeks. It's a tough life but the frequent flier miles are goooood. I USED to live in Mexico, now I commute between Calif, Rio and Buenos Aires. I am glad you have been lucky, but I know some TJ cops, they get $200 a month and have to pay for their own gun and uniform, so they HAVE to steal to live. If you want to get shook down, just drive north on Constitucion to the border road in an expensive car with Calif plates. Three cruisers are working that neighborhood pulling over gringo cars and doing the old-fashioned shake-down, which I haven't seen much in a few years, so I thought it was worth mentioning. I joked around with the guys both times, played the game and paid the mordida. I have posted detailed truthful helpful messages on a number of boards. If you have a question for me you can use the private message feature, rather than make yourself feel important by flaming me on the board.

You must be the luckiest guy I know out there. If you think that Tijuana cops are honest and not corrupt then you must be drunk. There are some honest cops but many are so corrupted that they not only shakedown Americans but also their own people. Why dont you go and ask any of the Mexicans if they trust the cops. You don't need to break the law for them to rip you off. One of my friends got stop because the corrupt cop said that he did not use the turn signal when he turned right at a stop sign. He let my friend go after he threaten to take my friend to the station if he doesn't get his $40.00, and that just one of many stories I have seen. Tijuana are full of corrupted cops so you need to wake up!

I cannot speak to the other poster you mention, but I have been traveling to Baja my entire life, first with my parents and then continualy as an adult. Currently I own a small house in Rosarito and travel there as often as my schedule permits, I can say with absolute certainty the TJ Police have stepped up thier shake down campaign. The worse part about it is, they used to be after a 20 spot, but now they have set thier sites on something much grander. A conspiracy? Doubtful, most likely it is just the result of ignorance on the part of Americans. If you get pulled over, try to have your act in order, just as you would if you were pulled over by an American cop, Registration, insurance etc. Do not offer a bribe at any time and if you are threatened with having to go to jail call their bluff. Unless you have been drinking you will be let free, you may get a ticket but the fines are reasonable and can be payed by mail. Do not drink and drive and if you do be prepared to pay a substantial "Propina" to get your self back on the road again. Taxi's are cheap and as I have posted earlier I am glad to see the "fun" improving in Rosarito. Incidently, the Rosarito Police are a different breed. The other day my lady and I had just finished dinner and a couple of beers, a cop came up to my car just after I had entered, he asked a few questions, told me I was illegally parked. Then let me go, without a doubt he knew I had been drinking (Yes I am gulty) but Rosarito depends heavly on the tourist and I think the cops simply have a different mandate.

Calle Coahuilla has changed a lot since my last visit and now has a wider, cleaner street with a concrete center divider lined up with palm trees. Taxi cabs no longer congregate in front of Adelita's door which preserves the cleanliness and accessibility of the street, but they now crowd the street in front of Chicago Club.

It was the usual dimly lit search-for-a-chick atmosphere at Adelita, where my friends and I had one trip each to the hotel room upstairs with our choice of partners, and then moved on to Las Chevalas finding fresher grounds.

Not as crowded as Adelita's, brighter lighting, and with less customers to serve the waiters come to you more often, to ask if you want a drink or a girl, or both.

I did not partake at this time, and had come up with the excuse that I have just come out of Adelita's hotel room and need time to recover. (At age 55, recovery time is fairly long!)

Two of my friends have taken their dates to the room
and I gather that the place provides cleaner rooms/sheets/ towels plus there are no towel boys who constantly run around banging on doors yelling time is up, or hassle every john for room cleaning fees or tips.

Hmmm, looks like a candidate destination for our next trip.

Thursday night I was supposed to hook up with Gekko and friends. Thursday was a Mexican holiday (Revolution Day). First, I went to Senor Frogs for a bite to eat - the food's awesome. I was looking for my waiter from the previous visit, but his cousin told me, "Alberto is upstairs in the private party." He gave me a pass to get into the party (supposedly a $10 value). But I had to finish eating first. I was already buzzed when I got to Frogs, then had this kick-ass margarita with my dinner. There had to be close to 500 people in there, dancing, sitting around, mingling. Mostly younger folks - in their 20s. The music was so loud my hair was literally vibrating. I stayed about an hour and tried hooking up with some hot girls who weren't with a guy, but nothing happened. So, as cool as it was to be there, I decided to abandon my seemingly low chances for success at Frogs for a good time with Gekko & friends.

Met Gekko & co. at Hong Kong Club. We sat for maybe 20 minutes, then were leaving. I gave one last dollar to one of the girls on stage, who leaned down and urged me to stay. Meanwhile, my buds were already out the door. So I stayed for one private dance, $20. But that dance lasted 3-4 songs, and she already had dropped everything exept her bra. earlier you stated that you live in mexico and that was the basis of your expertise on mexican police. now you say that you keep getting harrassed by the mexican police so you are leaving your car on the american side and using taxis. so what, you leave your house in mexico cross over to the us and then take a taxi?

also, i noticed that at the time that you were being shaken down by the mexican police you were also at help in rio. man, you must have a private jet or something. if you have something helpful, and hopefully truthful to add to the forum please do so, but don't just keep making up stories to amuse yourself or make yourself seem important and knowledgeable. i drive across from n. county san diego at least a couple of times a month and was actually down there on this last friday and saturday nights, i had friends here from the east coast, i was not shaken down nor did i see any such thing. if you run a stop sign or break the mexican traffic laws then the tj police may well be brazen enough to pull you over and shake you down, otherwise in the five years that i have been driving over i have never had or witnessed a problem.

now for the juicy part, went to la tropa both friday and saturday nights actually a couple of new young chicks, i am in my fifties so young to me might not be young to some of you. but my friends and i all were very happy with the selection and sixty dollar service at la tropa.
