The Uber dispute is a non-issue now. I take Uber when I am heading back to the border these days. I use the taxi van's within Tijuana and for longer distances.

    P.S. Don't drink the water!

I would agree to take Uber as much at possible, but remember in around H. Kong Zone, they there is an underground union and they are not to happy with Uber. During the day there is no issue. At night I would not mess around and get in the first available reasonably priced cab. It is getting more dangerous in the Zone and this trend will continue. As the Border continues to tighten up, the Cartels will become more desperate and will need to find other was to make money.

Be safe, better safe then sorry.

    A couple of refresher questions:

    1. How much is a taxi (in pesos) from the border to HK and back on a Saturday afternoon / night? I assume that walking is not a good idea anymore.

    2. The yellow cabs are the one to take, correct?

I still have about $80 in pesos from a previous trip to Puerto Vallarta. Was planning to save some of that for the taxi. They always screw you on the conversion. I assume that the action at HK, as well as the ST room, are paid for in USD, about $80 and $20 respectively?

    See you all there soon!

The only people I meet who go are foreigners who want another stamp on the passport and 20 year old Australian chicks who love to backpack by themselves through central and south America.
Yeah the polica problem was from my posts over 10 years ago. I remember when the government took away their guns and rumor was they got sling shots, but basically they were MIA which was a relief at the time because they were always robbing tourists. My buddy had a rx down there and we left a friend in AB while we grabbed some stuff from the pharmacy. Some druggie started chatting my friend and I told him to ignore and walk. Next thing the cops stopped us, cuffed us, put us in the truck and drove in circles to confuse us but we were under the arches so didn't go far and took the 500+ we had on us to let us go. Total BS but my friend was married with kids and didn't want trouble while there. I lived both in LA and SD. A guy I worked with told me about AB and CC, back then HK wasn't a place to go as it was before the remodel. Lots of guys use to cross back then and a lot of guys wanted to join me when I was in LA but didn't because of that one experience I had with the polica. I prefer lone wolfing and never bring anything (cel, cards, etc) the bandits could use to ransom me to family.

I did see a backpacker on the Trolley she crossed over too and was speaking another language on the phone. Times have changed but honestly it seemed better this trip than in the past but much fewer tourists about.

Less than 2 weeks ago there was another shooting in the alley near HK. I was in HK less than 24 hours after that shooting and meseros in HK were telling me that it was back to business as usual. You couldn't tell that there was a shooting earlier.

    I felt safe by myself

What I noticed today was A LOT of police cars and more polica in the streets in general. A few fedaralies but I prefer them to the polica as only polica have stole money out of my pockets when searching me in the past. Honestly I was a bit more worried crossing today than in the past because of what I've read here and with just standing out as a gringo by himself in general. I did take a cab to HK because of that worry, but walking around after my first pop at HK I felt safer than I did in the past. Today my biggest concern was if I'd be harrassed by the polica and I passed by Many, many, MANY cops if you want in we willnot a single problem. I can take risks when I'm by myself but after todays experience I wouldn't hesitate to bring my friends with me for a good time and I'd even bring my GF for shopping and seeing another culture as she's never been to Mexico. I didn't mind the checkpoint on the way in. Took 2 min and made me feel that the country wants to show people coming in that you can't just walk in and dump on us like they could before. Small hassle but gives me a feeling of the country of Mexico taking PRIDE in those who they allow in. Big thumbs up on that one. Perception becomes reality and I saw what looked like a tour of Chinese people going through Zona Norte. Not mongers but older men / women all following the leader with the flag. LOL.

So a big thumbs up to the leadership of Mexico for taking pride and working on getting tourists coming back to Tijuana. In the 2000's I use to see so many tourists and over the years it go less and less. Today was the worst I've ever seen it, but word of mouth will start to bring them back and if the corrupt cops don't mess it up then I think it will only get better. Taking a few 20's from tourists a day might be a great haul for the corrupt but when those tourists tell their friends and slowly they all stop coming back. Think long term and 'teach the people of Mexico how to fish instead of stealing a fish for food for a day' it's a long journey back but what I saw today was a step in the right direction. P.S. Happy Independence Day this weekend Mexico.

Edit PS I felt safe and walked back to PED East with no concerns. =)

I was in Tijuana yesterday evening and police presence seemed about normal. While the shootings are a bit worrisome. A increase in ratero and potential mugging activity is the main thing to be concerned about. When I was walking to across the pedestrian bridge the police seemed to searching everyone on the the stairs. I did notice the police were searching more people than normal in the alley.

    Mesera Bar Gold Palace.

    To Travv.

A couple meseros and 1 mesera, all wearing white shirts, are always out in front touting bar Gold Palace. The chubby mesera in white shirt was always out in front, looking at me intently like she was waiting for something from me, which I thought was unusual. The bar hardly ever had customers. I don't know how they stay in business.

Last Saturday night I walked by, asked a mesero to lit my cigarette. She was out in front looking at me again. So she may be a drug dealer. Too bad violence is everywhere in Mexico.

Policia posted 4 armed guys in front of hotel Edouardo. Perhaps they were serious about catching the dealers, but of course they were all gone.

The paraditas who normally stand next to Restaurante Azul ran into the restaurant then up to the 2 d floor balcony. Likely will find out tomorrow in the newspaper the details over the shooting. Can hear the ambulance sirens now.

I heard the shots from my room at Cascadas last night while I was sleeping. Very scary stuff and it's the main reason I never wander around the zona or even go into HK past sundown.
