    Auto Insurance

    Amor.

By laws cars have to have insurance in Mexico, but US insurance is not valid. Without liabilities insurance, if you are at fault in accidents, you would have to settle in cash, or policia will impound your car and throw you in jail until the liabilities are settled. It's a damn inconvenience.

Hope your wife doesn't have to travel to Mexico to bail you out. So you should cover your hairy ass with at least a liability policy issued by a Mexican insurance company, can be bought from a number of sources, as low as $110 a year from a Mexican company affiliated with AAA. Check AAA.com. Buy it on line, quick and cheap.

    Auto Insurance

Does everybody who drives over buy insurance? It's like $25 for a day.

Arrived in the alley Thursday late afternoon, where I found. A crime scene. It was roped off with yellow tape. I counted 7 unmarked pickups. The Non-uniformed LEO then got in their trucks, turned on their sirens and left the alley. In the back of one pickup, there were two perps. Both had lovely tattoos on their bald skulls and face. Must have been a lovely dance when you have so may detectives in one area. Anyone know what happened? This wasn't a vanilla drug bust.

    Agreed

I usually need my car for work down there, so I have no option. So I've driven hundreds of times.

I drive a relatively late-model Subaru, and I've never had any problems with theft or vandalism. The cops, OTOH, . Well, let's just say I've never had ANY problems while reasonably sober. (grin).

The number one rule, if we get stopped let Jinxx do the talking. And wear your seatbelt.

Do you drive around Tijuana much? There are tons of really nice cars running around now. New BMWs and Mercedes are all over the place. Unless you're driving a stretch limo or a bright yellow Lambo you're not going to get a second look.

According to the same article, it requires a study, due 180 days after the law goes into effect. So, mid-year they may have the study done. I seriously doubt it's going to be feasible to scan every vehicle. The backup would go on for miles.

Everytime I consider simply driving over and parking.

The cop actually wrote me out a ticket, took my DL license and had me follow him to the "delegacion" in the camino verde area. I was a fool for letting things progress that far and not cutting things short with a quick little 200 peso bribe. I was halfway waiting for the cop to basically come right out and ask for the bribe, and I was halfway curious to find out what happens if you actually get issued an actual citation. So once we were at the delegacion the cop told me he would change the ticket to driving while texting (which he said was much cheaper than a seatbelt infraction) if I agreed to give him 200 pesos. I said ok, but when I went to the window to pay the lady tried to charge me 1800 pesos. So I argued (politely) with the cop that he told me the wrong info. So then my only choice was to go see the "judge" that they have onsite and ask for a discount. He took me into another office and the judge lowered my fine to 1300 pesos which I went back to the window to pay with a debit card. The way the cop explained it was I had to pay or he'd have to impound my car. So basically I had to pay a 1300 fine and the cop ended up with nothing no extra cash for himself.

Lessons learned: You do have to wear a seatbelt in Mexico. Yea I know that should be common sense but I assumed they didn't care since I drive past cops all the time while not buckled up. I will be wearing a seatbelt from now on.

Lesson 2: Even though I hate corruption and bribing cops, it's almost always better(easier) to just bribe the cop and go on about your business. Of course that's only if you're actually doing something wrong. If you know you did nothing wrong then stand your ground and don't give up anything at all. But honestly out of all the encounters I've had with Tijuana police I can't say they've ever actually truly screwed me over.
The rule is to pay the bribe if you are guilty. If you are not guilty, then go see the judge.

I think it comes down to the pricing. If it is 200 pesos, it is a good deal. If the cop wants 2,000 pesos. That's unreasonable. Somewhere in between depends on the time of day and location.
