Before I travel to a new place, I will read the topic here, and look for red flags, such:

Lots of posts with questions, but few actual reports.

Multiple reports about one specific lady (implying that she is the sole provider).

High prices.

I asked this somewhere else but I think it's more suited to here. How can you make sure that a prostitute you're hiring isn't being forced to prostitute, under the control of a pimp, or otherwise in a situation where you really shouldn't be hiring them for sex? I'm particularly concerned about this in the context of hiring prostitutes in a poorer country where this kind of exploitation is more common. Besides this, are there other things I should be considering to stay on the ethical side of paying for sex?

I'd say you need to look at the laws and the rules of the country and how they are enforced or not enforced. Because it's the rules and the laws that lead to exploitation, rather than economic need.

USA was a rich country, when they had black slavery. And the cause of slavery at that time was the laws and the rules of the country, rather than people's poverty or prosperity.

It's something similar now regarding sexual exploitation of women.

It has nothing to do with poverty or prosperity of the country. Women sex-workers are exploited in countries where the laws and the rules force them to hide from the law and the police. Their sex-work is treated as crime, which leaves these women at the mercy of real criminals. These women don't feel free to complain to the same police, who regularly hassle them and arrest their customers.

So, to be ethical about it, you need to avoid countries where women sex-workers don't have the protection of the law and the police, and where such workers don't feel free to complain to the authorities about crimes against them.

I'd say some of the richest countries in the world are guilty of this, and they need to be avoided for P4P.

When workers have the protection of the law and the police, then they work of their own free will. And the reason why they work is to make money for their needs and wants. Which is a perfectly normal thing to do. And if you have a need for the work they do, then it's a mutually beneficial relationship, where both of you get what you need and want from each other. A mutually beneficial relationship is what people call fair and square, rather than exploitation.
