as i mentioned in my diary, top town and sok san palace are very expensive places. i haggled hard in each place and got prices of $50 (top town) and $60 (sok san palace). i suspect the main customers of these places aren't the type of people who read this forum, they're cashed-up tourists who feel horny one evening and relish the chance to get away from the friends / tour party (or partner?) for a bit of naughty action. these people don't want to be trawling the local freelance bars or walking up and down sivatha road, they want sex-on-a-plate and i'd bet that the majority of customers are japanese or korean. certainly those i saw were. undoubtedly top town and sok san charge high prices compared to other places in cambodia but that's because they know they can. you've also got to pay extra ($10) for a room for an hour at a short-time hotel nearby (unless you take her back to your hotel).

my prices were higher because i took a motorbike taxi to both venues. both drivers said that they'd charge me $1 for a return trip to both venues (from the end of pub street) but of course that's because they know they'll get commission from either the venue or the hotel. when i went in to both venues i was followed inside by my driver, so obviously that pushed the price higher. normally i never pay commission, i'll either walk or take public transport, however both top town and sok san are difficult to find. top town is on a road just left off airport road but i couldn't tell you the name of it as i was on the back of a motorbike and it was dark. sok san palace is some distance up sivatha road, heading out of siem reap. it's the first left after a hotel which has speed bumps outside it. if you make your own way there then you'll get a cheaper price but neither is walking distance and both are in the middle of nowhere, down dusty tracks.

freelancers charge far less and actually three of the prettiest four girls i saw in siem reap were freelance hookers near where sivatha road meets pub street. these girls charge $20. looking for street-walkers can be hit and miss of course. sometimes your luck is in and sometimes it isn't and you've got to take in to account that cambodia is very hot and if you spend too long walking about, you'll be a sweaty mess by the time you find your girl! the chicken farms are another option. find a reliable moto driver, tell him 'chicken farm, not top town or sok san' and see where he takes you.

In Phnom Penh I would stay near walkabout / Pontoon.

That area is flooded with freelancers.

That's Street 51 area. Most places during the day have beer for 50 cents. Walkabout is good as beer is cheap there at any time.

Pontoon has so many pretty girls.

Hence use tuk tuks to take you from point A to B. They are cheap. Maybe a dollar or two for the journey. As you are in Cambodia for a very short time, why waste time looking for a bike rental place and figuring out how to get to your destination. You can also get a bike rider to take you to your destination. Sit on the back and enjoy the ride. I enjoyed that transportation method.

In PP, try staying on or close to street 51 as there is enough pussy to keep you occupied for a long time. On your next longer vacation, you can try out the other areas too.

Ok, so I won't rent a bike. I agree with $50-$60 being way too much, even for Thailand but it depends on the quality of the girl though. Probably once I get there all my plans will go out the window anyway.

when you get to your first destination, contact a travel agent. they will tell you the cost of flights and the days / time the planes fly. they can also arrange for hotel pickup if you decide to use the mini van. it takes about 5 1/2 hours by minivan.

don't rely on common suggestions like pub street or "other bars". or you'll be frustrated. pub street is just a sex scam place and bars like micky's bar is full of old garbage lads and drunk barangs. and damn ladyboys! read my previous post.

if i read that you plan to go back to thailand after arriving in cambodia i would recomment the following route: guess you arrive in pp by air, stay there 1, 5 days / 2 nights and take (early morning 7 am) the boat to seam reap.

you will arrive around 2 pm in seam reap. the trip over water will cost 35 usd and beside travelling by air this is the fastest way of transport between pp and sr (and no bad road and / or traffic jams).

i made the journey in reverse a few months ago. the quality of the road wasn't that bad really. i booked a ticket on a minibus which was very cheap ($10 i think but i can't quite remember). the journey took about six hours but that included the usual comfort / snack break halfway which took at least 30 minutes. minibus.

by boat will take 7 hours according to above stated (start 7am. arrive 2 pm) and i've also read it depends on the tide and number of passengers.

i will fly from don muang to pp and stay there for one night, then the following day go to siem reap.

stay in sr for 2 nights (i'll have at least one full day for angkor what) and go back to pp and stay there one night because i've already booked a plane ride back to don muang from pp. (in retrospect, i should have travelled back to thailand straight form sr)

first, thank you for your reports. i will read them again, before my next trip to cambodia. i am a newbie, but i did not want to go to thailand. i been in thailand many time, but on family holiday, with only small mongering (massage with "happy ending" etc). so after my divorce i wanted to go for a "new area". cambodia was an amazing experience. for my next trip to september i go to vietnam and then to combodia.

i'm glad you had a good time and i hope my reports proved useful. cambodia is a useful alternative to thailand, especially phnom penh which has lots of pretty girls available for cheap prices. i have only been to vietnam as a tourist but it is somewhere on my radar too. please post a field report with your findings. another place you might like to consider is indonesia. it's a great country with lots to do and i'd rate jakarta as one of the most exciting pay-for-play cities in the world. there are some very pretty girls and it's very cheap too.

I'm planning my virgin trip to Cambodia. I have about 4 days there before going back to Thailand so I and plan to do PP one day, (taking Air Asia from DM) , then SR for 2 days to see Angkor what and then the last day / night back in PP.

A couple of questions which I couldn't find on the forum, or maybe missed them;

- Is the road between PP to SR really that bad or is it smooth freeway. In other words, would I get there much faster if I hired a car instead of a public bus?

- Or is it better to fly from PP to SR and how much would that cost?

- Is Cambodia cheaper than Thailand for buying Anti-Biotics, Viagra, Cialis and all that stuff? Easy to get?

- Any recommendations for good places to stay with indoor safe and wifi in PP and SR?

- Where are the latest P4P hotspots? Any recommendations?

I forgot some points:

If you have time stay in Phnom Pehn for some days longer. If you are interested in you could visit the killing fields and the prission (I believe called S39) in the middle of PP. A nice balance with mongering activities.

In Seam Reap you can easily spend 3 days for visiting the ancient park. There are several routes and If you frequently leave your tuc tuc you can see a lot. Seam Reap evening live is less than in SR.

For PP try the landscape hotel, equivalent to 4 star in other countries for around 50 USD (its on the boulevard and gf).

For SR try the Tara Angor hotel a little out of town, simulair to PP and if you are lucky try the inhouse massage parlor and If you are lucky you can get a HJ. The girl was fantastic (for 10 USD) but she didn't want to come to my room.

Hope you enjoy and in general Cambodia is cheaper then Thailand.

If I read that you plan to go back to Thailand after arriving in Cambodia I would recomment the following route:

Guess you arrive in PP by air, stay there 1, 5 days / 2 nights and take (early morning 7 AM) the boat to Seam Reap.

You will arrive around 2 PM in Seam Reap.

After 1, 5 (or 2, 5) day in SR you can take a people carrier (for 10 or 15 USD) to Bangkok (or to Pattaya).

The trip to BKK takes around 7 hours (including 1 hour border passing by Pol Pet border crossing which seems the most efficient). There are several departures per day between 6 PM and 1 PM (if my memory is correct).

The trip over water will cost 35 USD and beside travelling by air this is the fastest way of transport between PP and SR (and no bad road and / or traffic jams).

Their are many travel agents / offices and you can buy the tickets till 1 day before your departure. Mostly it includes (tuc tuc) transport from tour your hotel to the starting point of the trip.

Hope that others can help you with your other questions.

Road between PP to SR really that bad: It is not fully paved yet and is bumpy at places. Renting a car would not be a better option. Instead of the bus, take the 10-14 people min van which is quicker and still around USD 10. 00. I flew back from Snooky to Siem Reap, a longer distance and it cost me USD 118. 00. The flight was about 45 minutes, officially 1 hour.
