Posts: 3542Thank You - one and ALL!!
thanks to all of you for providing the information on vpn and proxy services.
here i must digress and also thank all the contributors who posts on the china boards - from china!!
i live in hong kong and its a breeze to post reports from here - but the few times that i've posted from within china, it really has been an exercise in frustration with:
- having to search for a proxy/vpn service just about everytime i try to get on (these services are still quite inconsistent - one day up, another day down etc),
- getting on but then loosing it midway,
- signing on and then being signed off (happens all the time when you've written a post and try to submit it/loosing the post),
- slow speed to post - especially pictures (practically mission impossible!)
- computers getting infected, and being so full of viruses so soon (the great china conumdrum!)-
- etc etc.
and thus my hats off - and special thanks - to you guys who do post from china. i really don't think people outside of china really understand - or appreciate the effort that you guys take to report from there.

I have been using a VPN designed by a fellow ISGr. He does not live in China but visits the Middle Kingdom occasionally. I have used his beta version for almost one year not and never had a problem
He is not yet ready to market it but when he does I will let you all know. It is an excellent system and will be in the range of US$5.00 per month range. Maybe slightly higher, who knows?
I will post it here when it is available. Please DO NOT send PM to me now. Wait until he tells me he is ready,

I haven't tried it but I found another free VPN service.
The website is www.ULTRAVPN.fr
Give it a try and see how it works.
It is using the OPENVPN client, same at WITOPIA/ALONWEB etc.
They post instructions for PC, MAC and LINUX use.
Completely free, donations accepted.
If you try it, write a report to the forum. I'm still using ALONWEB, it works fine for me. Witopia is better but for my Alonweb is good enough for my limited usage.

Posts: 113Street maps In China Goodle news
Google maps have updated all of the China street maps with it all in English and covering a lot of the great tourist spots we all enjoy. Shenzhen and Donggang are on there Has Bus stops, numbers of the bus, KFCs and Hotels with links and pictures of the outside and you can easy change to sat view as well, to get bearings on local landmarks. Still no street view of the catacombs though, That should be interesting when it happens.

I found ALONWEB and it works well enough for the times when I need it. Once in while you get an advertisement and you have to wait 30 seconds to see your page. Not too much of a big deal. The price is right too: FREE!
Some business people are using FREEGATE. It is a not a VPN but works differently, not sure if ISG works using FREEGATE but it should.
There is another software like freegate that exists and works similarly.
Sometimes I use a proxy server for quick views, but the proxy server may not work in all locations in China. Each city seems to have their own blocked proxy server list.

I've also clicked on www.reliablehostings.com, but it seems like this is a page which gives you several different VPN servers. so Lebaron, which on that page did you chose and how is it in term of price, reliability, delay etc.
I am trying to figure this all out/ considering which one to subscribe to and would appreciate any and all advise.
Anybody else got any other suggestions for a reliable, low cost and little delayed VPN?
