dex go, funny that you should ask during the week that is the height of hurricane season in the caribbean. there are no cruise ships in sxm during these weeks, and very few tourists. and even i am gone from the area for a month or two.
on the other hand, the girls who go to st maarten at this time don't seem to know about the slow tourism business, anyone who goes should be able to negotiate anything that they want (and still pay only the std $40 per session).

My novia and I were leaving the office of a notary here in Bogotá when we ran into her best friend that she had while working in St Martin. I remember her and her boy friend that was a French roofer. In St Martin they said they would be leaving and get married in Colombia. Sure enough they got legally married in a church and bought a house 1 ˝ hours out of Bogotá in the lowlands where it is warm. He is 45 and a good worker, a solid citizen. She is retired and is 24 with one daughter. What a nice ending to a terrible Career. As a wedding gift I took them out to dinner. It was so nice to see a happy ending to such sadness. They will be going to St Martin in November where he can work and she will be a home body and take care of her daughter. They do not wish any more children. After the season they will return to Colombia.

This time of year I can rent a car from wally cars for $18-19- a day all incllusive. They are on the french side and will pick up at the airport.

Posts: 1114Can't answer for your personal insurance, but if you pay with credit card like VISA, it may give you also the additional insurance coverage.
No specific areas to avoid in the island, just the usual precautions, especially by night and outside the touristic areas.
Plenty of young single tourists by night in the outgoing area of Maho Beach, not easier or more difficult to meet than anywhere else. But keep in mind that it's low season and atmosphere is much quieter than in the winter. But there is no reason to be alone, TLN in SXM starts at 8pm till 11am. That's why TLN is so great in SXM, you have a real date for all that time and there are plenty of outgoing options to have fun together.

Posts: 972i can always cancel the all inclusive part; the difference is $50 per night. i figured just for breakfast and free [CodeWord118], the $50 was nominal, and yes, in my searching i see nothing but great looking restaurants now...
as to a rental car, i have an avis car ready, is $187.00 with tax for the 5 days. this leads to another question. i guess i need to call my auto insurer but my guess is my coverage here is no good in st maarten or i might be able to add coverage, the other option is for $ 19.99 per day pay avis for insurance. any thoughts?
are there any unsafe areas of the island to avoid? i remember back in the late 80's we went to a nude beach, up the way from maho bay ( headed north) and hopped the wall for a peak and a swim. 20 minutes later, the lock to the trunk of the car was busted and a days worth of booze shopping and tee-shorts was gone.
i hear it is a couples island, can i expect to be the only single guy dining alone with no date? lol guess the odds of picking up a civilian there also on holiday is low.

I don't want to disappoint you but, St. Martin is the ONE island where you don't want to stay in an all inclusive hotel. There are too many fine restaurants around the island to limit yourself to eating at the hotel. See if you can change the all inclusive to just getting a room rate. If not, try the Holland House Hotel which is in the center of Philipsburg and sits on the beach. You also might try Divi Little Bay which is not far from Philipsburg.
Also, you will need to rent a car. It is the best way to visit other areas of the island and its beaches. You really cannot get lost in St. Martin and you will want to explore. Routard is right about Grande Case. It is indeed an experience to eat there. Also try the lolos in Grande Case. Bringing ladies back to your hotel is not a problem. Just find the right one for you that you wish to spend the night with.
In restaurants on the French side, you will get the bill with a service charge included. That service charge is the tip and is usually 15-22% depending on the number in your party. However, if the service is outstanding and you wish to tip more that is up to you.
Note; if the cruise ships are in town, get in your car and go to another beach for the day. Philipsburg can get very crowded when the cruise ships come in.
Message us if you wish more information on the island.

Posts: 1114I nearly confused it with the Sonesta on Maho Beach, a better know hotel as it's in the middle of the main tourist outgoing area. Sonesta Great Bay is close to Phillipsburg, so you are indeed close to the brothels. Anyway, all hotels are girlfriendly, no one will try to check if your girl is a hooker or not. Don't worry, there are plenty of good restaurants in SXM, the best are in the main street from Grand Case on the French side. No tipping required in the brothels. In the restaurant, it's different. SXM is a funny island as it is shared by two countries. Tipping is not required in France, so should not be necessary on the French side. The Dutch side is Americanized, so tipping is expected. But as it's just one small island and you can easily forget on which side you are, common rule is that you are expected to tip if you pay with $ and not if you pay with €. And as in most tourist places the rule is 1$ = 1€, it doesn't make any difference anymore.

I am headed to the island for 5 days at the end of September. I have read several of the posts here and they have been quite informative, I will happily post my trip reports here. I was there back in 1989; all I remember is the Seamens Club. I certainly plan to return there as well as visiting the other brothels.
Just a few questions:
1) Does anyone have experience staying at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach & Casino? Good or bad? I have reserved a room there, it is US 185 a night all inclusive. It appears to be a short ride to all the brothels?
2) What is the general attitude about bringing ladies back to hotels with the front desk, bell hops, other guests etc etc.
3) Though the hotel offers all meals and buffets, if venturing out for a few meals, any good specific places, esp seafood?
Any tips would be appreciated speaking of which, do the girls expect tips and is it customary to tip waiters and bartenders
I live in Austin and am very active in the local scene, and have mongered in MX , Canada, Central America as well as several trips to Amsterdam. I figure this Dutch island is perfect.
