Thank everyone who has helped out here with their input on choosing SXM or SDQ. After reading reports as far back as I can on both places, as all suggestion pointed out, there are pros and cons for both places. These two destinations are certainly quite different from each other, and as Puntz79 said the best way is to pay each place a visit to find out. Unfortunately, time is the luxury I don't have at the moment. In the past I have been to many parts of Latin America, so I don't think I will be confused or intimidated by the vast options in SDQ. But relaxing at the beautiful beaches when not chasing chicas is not a bad idea either. Colombianas are always my preferences, but I also find some Dominicanas quite attractive when I encountered them in other parts of the world. It will be a tough choice. I will write a report after my trip wherever I choose to go.

Not sure where you were smoking joints and doing coke on the boardwalk. There is quite a police presence, not to mention all the cruise ship passengers. The boardwalk isn't Amsterdam and the SXM police do a pretty good job of ensuring that the boardwalk area stays very safe and tourist friendly, since that's the bread and butter of the island when the ships pull into port. Unless you wandered down some alley towards backstreet and some rasta man scouted you out, I've never seen drug dealers during a busy Saturday in P'Burg. Especially with all the high end shops in the area. The main police HQ is two blocks off from Front Street and there is a police substation at the pier. Consider yourself lucky that a cop didn't get to you. You can walk freely with open beers everywhere. Even drive with an open container on the Dutch side, but drugs are illegal on both sides of the island. Take note for your next visit. Just giving you a heads up.
