My original plan was to visit with my other novia for 4 days and then end the trip with 3 days of all out mongering. The Health Department are screening people who may have been exposed in May, starting this Saturday (July 21). Late June exposures are scheduled to be screened in August. People getting checked now with recent exposure may get false negative results. So if you're concerned, you should wait at least 8 weeks before getting tested. It's just a simple skin reaction test (PPD - Mantoux).

The paper today says that the health authorities are planning to test clients of Casa Blanca for TB, but it didn't say when, didn't give the name and picture of the sick girl, etc. Casa Blanca is still closed.

The girls in the other clubs don't seem particularly concerned, although at the gas station today a local guy asked the 2 chicas with me if they were from Casa Blanca where the TB was - he must not be a mongerer, since they were colombianas and casa blanca is 100% dominicanas.

You are correct. TB is transmitted through the air, BUT, intimate contact INCREASES the chances of transmission, therefore a sex worker would have a higher chance of transmitting the disease because of the direct contact with the client. Think of it like a DEADLY cold.

according to a local newspaper here in curacao it's the boarder bar that's being closed. the boarder bar is on the oyster pond road.

boarder bar is the same as casa blanca, it is called that because it is just before the french side border.

the girls are not working at other places until checked out. so they aren't working at the moment, at least not officially.

the rest of the bars (seamans, carolines, defiance, petit chateau) are open for business as usual.

no new cases of active tb found

~ concerns raised about client testing ~
philipsburg--although sector health care affairs (shca) has announced that no new active cases of tuberculosis (tb) have been identified, concerns have been raised about the testing of clients who may have had close contact with the brothel worker who tested positive for the deadly infectious disease last week.

some medical professionals believe that testing of possible clients should be made a priority.

a government information service (gis) press release issued late monday quoted head of the preventative health section of sector health care affairs dr. rachel eersel as saying there was no reason for panic, as contact-tracing was still being done. she said additional information would be made available to the public once it became available.

eersel had told the daily herald on sunday that all persons who were living and working in the same environment as the brothel worker were being tested in the contact-tracing investigation. she had said too that clients who might have been in contact with the brothel worker would be tested if the investigation revealed that this was necessary.

however, at least two health care professionals told this newspaper speedy efforts should have been made already to urge clients who visited the brothel in recent weeks to go in for voluntary testing.

in an invited comment dr. michael mercuur said that while testing persons living and working in the same vicinity as the brothel worker was a good move, it was highly likely that the brothel worker had had closer contact with clients she might have “entertained” in the days preceding her testing positive.

it could not be ascertained whether the brothel worker had been working in the days leading up to her being tested positive or whether she had had close contact with clients and, if so, how many.

mercuur said it might be difficult to determine the identity of her clients, but announcements could have been made in the media to ask them to go in voluntarily for testing.

“if she had three clients per night, which is below average, this would mean in one week she would have had 20 clients. the number of clients she may have had closer contact with may be higher than the number of colleagues she worked with or persons she may be living with,” he argued.

he said too that before any announcement for voluntary testing was made, sufficient preparations should be made to accommodate a possible high volume of people. “if they consider this they definitely have to be prepared for it, because suppose 500 people show up,” mercuur said in the telephone interview.

he said too that at least one pharmacy on the island had run out of tuberculosis testing material over the weekend. he quickly added that additional material had been brought in later.

mercuur said there was no reason for panic, as the disease was treatable and unless the strain tested on the brothel worker was “a super-multi-resistant strain,” the public had no reason to be alarmed.

this newspaper understands that the mantoux test, an intra-dermal injection applied to the skin, is one of the preferred means of testing for tb. if the skin becomes red and swollen three days after the injection is administered, chances are the person has contracted the disease.

one person who spoke on the condition of anonymity said visitors to the club already should have been asked to go in for voluntary testing.

mercuur does not agree with making the clients’ names and pictures public. this may be against doctor/patient confidentiality.

this newspaper also understands that a construction worker tested positive for tb just six weeks ago and was immediately placed under treatment. eersel had said earlier that an average of two tb cases were reported on the island annually.

gis said that since the most recent case had been confirmed, the health surveillance team had begun investigating the matter and had started contact-tracing. “this investigation is still ongoing, as contacts are coming to shca to receive the necessary diagnostic testing. the results thus far have not revealed any additional active tb case,” gis said.
