Another web site said of the approximately 10,000 rooms available pre Irma, about 56% (how they got that number is beyond me) will be available this high season. Sonesta at Great Bay has been bought by Sun Wing Canadian airline and will re-brand it as a Planet Hollywood, to open in 2020. Weston in Dawn beach hopes to have one building back next year and the rest in 2020.

People are hurting on the island because so much employment has been disrupted, lack of rooms to rent and airlines have jacked up the prices because of low demand. At least the cruise ships are back.

It is wishful thinking that these major chains will pull off that construction schedule. There I nothing going on at the Westin. It is a mammoth property and badly damaged. The Sonesta Great Bay site has nothing going on and the remaining piece of bulding on-site is badly damaged. Not sure if that will see the wrecking ball. My guess is yes. Word is that the locals are upset with foreign labor coming on island to rebuild, plus nowhere to house the workers. Except for construction of new high rise by Sonesta in Maho, there is almost nothing being done on a large scale. This includes the airport where the lower level remains largely gutted and very few workers in or on the building. Word that the first level will be usable by Nov / Dec is a pipe dream. The French side has almost nothing positive to note. The cruise lines are helping to sustain its very weak economy during the day.

But as I stated in prior posts, the essentials for mongering are decent.

The Flamingo is completely shut down. No activity. The old Pelican units are torn down. The newer Villas at Simpson Bay Beach and Marina that surrounded Pelican are open. As is the Atrium condos next door. Rates are actually better this year than in past years, contrary to other report. And round trip, non-stop JetBlue from JFK was low $400 for me this week. I checked JetBlue just a minute ago, round trip Oct 24-31 would be $450. So prices are very reasonable right now. The demand is down to come here, so prices are not escalating.

At the airport, the entire building is not being used for any public purpose. Roof appears to be new. When you arrive, de-plane on tarmac and bussed to a temporary immigration center. Luggage is off-loaded to a room. Exit directly to outdoors on right side of building. No canopy of any type, so got drenched Saturday waiting for rental car shuttle when I came out. I am told that departures are in a tent away from the building.

Maho is a train wreck. All the shops on the bay side of the main road are unoccupied and in varying states of repair. Cherie's is not operating, nor is the casino. On the ocean side, Sonesta was torn down and new high rise being erected. Only steel framing is up. Royal Islander, rumored to reopen shortly, still appears to be weeks if not months away from that. Sunset Beach bar is open.

Cupecoy is dead. The monstrosity of retail, I. E. The mall, is shut down. Damage to the high rise condos still apparent.

French side to Marigot. Almost all of the hotels / resorts on the beachfront are shut down with little or no activity ongoing. Ghost town atmosphere. Almost no signs of construction materials or construction equipment or personnel.

Marigot is a mixed bag. Market area is functioning, but many of the restaurants that got flooded out have done nothing to re-establish. Some have cleaned the lot, but nothing more. I will head into the center of town today and check out the marina to see if any of the restaurants have opened.

Friars Bay looks good. Both beach bar / restaurants are operating again. For me, this is a little gem of a place to take a chica out for the day. From there, you can walk a path up to Happy Bay Beach which is often deserted, and is clothing optional. In the past, the bar on the far end would offer free chaises and umbrella if you bought lunch. The food was very decent, and prices were reasonable for food and drink. Good service and friendly staff.

Grand Case. Pretty much a train wreck. Some of the good restaurants on the inside of the main street have re-opened. But almost all of the beachfront restaurants remain in shambles. Little sign of any construction activity. The commercial businesses on the main road outside of town are operating. And my understanding is that the airport on the French side is operating.

Orient Beach: It is truly amazing to stand on this beach and look both ways and see virtually nothing but beach. Gives you an idea of what it originally looked like. The clothing optional far end had a lot of beach umbrellas up. Given my observations in years past of women who should be naked are not, and those that should not be naked are, I chose not to explore that any further. The Bikini Bar is operating, but nothing else is rebuilt. One building on the beach is under early reconstruction, but nothing else. The housing units there are a mixed bag. Some are occupied. The vast majority are not. Very little noticeable major repair being undertaken. The small cluster of shops has a number of stores / restaurants open.

Oyster Pond / Dawn Beach: Some units at Oyster Pond appear to be occupied. I think Captain Olivers is gone. The marina is in shambles. The Westin at Dawn Beach is completely abandoned and nothing appears to be underway to restore it.

French Side impression is that it will be years before it is back on its feet. Reconstruction of rental units / hotels is almost non-existent. My guess is that less than 10% of former units are back on line. A smattering of restaurants are open. Beaches have been cleaned and nature has replenished them, but virtually no services available at them.

Dutch Side impression is that things are working their way back, but it is a very slow process. Simpson Bay is clearly the place to stay if you come down now. I think it will be a few years before all the units are back on line, but probably 40-50% are available now.

Overall I am surprised at the lack of construction activity at the hotel / resort sites, and the limited signs of construction material and equipment dispersed around the island. I can understand why businesses are hesitant to rebuild or reopen until the rooms / condos are again available. From a monger's perspective, it still has everything I need. A decent place to stay in Simpson Bay, an assortment of restaurants to choose from, most all of the clubs open and stocked (thanks to a return of the cruise ship schedule), and beaches that are as beautiful as ever. Rental cars are relatively inexpensive, and plentiful. So, for me, it is pretty much business as usual. I am happy to be back. I am just sad for the local people who have to endure years of continued rebuilding and lack of economic opportunity. And as I reported previously, I am seeing a decline of respect for the tourists by the younger male population.

Set reasonable expectations coming here now and you will avoid any significant disappointments.

Thanks to a great NE-KC football game, I did not get out until post-midnight. Drove by El General (formerly Petite Chateau) and there were a handful of cars parked in front. When I got to Carolinas, the parking areas were packed. I did not attempt to park further back on the side street as this is where I had a late-night confrontation with a group of 10 or so local teenagers a couple years ago. So up the hill I went to Empire. I passed El Capitan, and there were a number of cars in the parking lot, but not packed. As I turned into the arch at Empire, it was clear that parking was packed and cars were jambed. I backed out and parked along the main road next to the wall and walked in. What struck me was the large number of young locals hanging in the parking lot and steps of the club. And inside, after paying a $5 cover charge, there must have been 50 young locals. There were probably 20-30 Colombian girls scattered around the club. As previously reported, this is a very large bar. And it was packed. I found my way to the bar and realized that I may have been the only tourist patron in the place. In the past, late night would find a number of solo patrons, along with small groups of guys checking it out, and a handful of older locals having a beer together. None of that existed this night. After the first couple of days I was a little concerned that this trip would not be up to par with previous visits but how wrong I was. Sorry if this gets a little wordy but I've had several people ask some questions so I'll try to cover as much ground as I can.

I will say that I kind of got used to travelling with a companion. The last few vacations have been with a few girls I've met in St Martin and I made accompanied trips to both Colombia and Mexico. A few days were saved in my three visits to the homeland for a little adventuring but I found it pretty chill knowing just exactly what kind of fun I would be having. Anyway. My first impressions were that quantity or level of talent available on the island wasn't too good. I was a bit disappointed but, fortunately, my initial observations were wrong. Very good news.

Hotels: I usually stay in my Oyster Bay timeshare for the week but generally arrive a couple of days before. My normal place to stay these couple of nights was Capt. Oliver's. Waking up with an amiga after a TLN and having coffee on the deck of the larger ocean front units was always refreshing. Well this place is no more and most of the Dinghy Dock area is destroyed. There are several places up the hill from Oliver's that have been rebuilt. I'm not sure if these are all homes, hotels or be&be's.

This visit I stayed for the first time at the Princess Heights Condos. A little pricey, $150/ night for a one bedroom but the area was nice and private.

The rooms were fantastic. A kind of scary drive up the hill but you could enter through a closed gate without going through any lobby. Very private.

The Casas:

Casa Blanca: I didn't drive up the hill there and the billboard that used to be along the road was nowhere to be found. The only thing that appeared to be open here was the roof. Lots of missing roof sections.

Hypnotique: This used to be my favorite place. Met lots of great chicas here. I never drove to the back but it also appeared to be closed. Very dark at night and no sign on the side of the building. Being the chicken that I am there is no way I was going to explore.

Petite Chateau: I'the never been here and still haven't. If it's the place along the road by the baseball stadium on the way to Carolinas with the big parking lot in front the name on the new lighted sign says El General. The few times I drove by there were no cars in front.

Crystals: Peeked in a couple of times but I only saw a couple of locals at the bar. I did see one BIG girl walking standing outside one time. I didn't spend any time here.

When they were visible there were some good ones to be had here and some just so-so on the rating scale. I can't put a numerical value on the quality since my tastes might be completely different than others. Overall though the quality may have been a little lower than past visits but still some good ones. Too many with way to big butts.

Pricing was the same as before. $50/ half hour. Casa fee $5. 00. $100/$10 for an hour.

El Capitan: I was a bit pleasantly surprised here. I was told there were about 20 girls here. I guess a 50/50 mix of Colombianas and Dominicanas. Overall quality varied from not great to not too bad.

As before the pricing was a bit higher than the other casas. The $50/$100 was the same but the time limit was 20 or 40 minutes and the house fee was $10/20 as it was my last visit.

Empire (Defiance): This was my first time going in here and I was very pleasantly surprised. About 20 girls here. 1 Dominicana, 1 Venezolana and the balance were from Colombia. Most had way too much silicone for my liking but there were a couple that, for whatever reason, were really to my liking.

As I mentioned before the bar was the widest I think I've ever seen (El Capitan was close but not quite as large) and the bar area giant. Two stages and lots of pretty comfortable seating. They had a curtain divider that they would use when the bar was slow just so it didn't look so big and empty. On a not long enough visit on my last afternoon on the island I noticed a hot tub was in the middle of the floor. I'm sure that was going to be interesting that night.

Pricing was $50/$100 for 30/1 HR.

Asking prices for TLN was generally about $300-350 plus multa of $70. With a little negotiation you can get a good price with some for an TLD / TLN combo.

Now for the good stuff. The chicas.

Based on some previous comments I was a little hesitant about going if you are considering SXM no real reason not to go. Love those $2 beers too.

Was looking forward to your wrap-up, and as promised you didn't disappoint. I stay in Oyster Pond myself, and am sad to hear of the destruction to Captain Olivers. The Dingy Bar was a favorite happy hour place. And I know that Mr. Busby's Beach Bar was also leveled in Oyster Pond. So Casa Blanca is toast. Wonder if the Oyster Pond area was ground zero for the hurricane. Sunset. Aka, the Border Bar is still alive. That's good news. And seems like Defiance is making a comeback. Hypnotique had some smoking Colombians as well. But looks like that's shut down. LE Petit with a new name. The parking lot used to be like the surface of the moon until they finally broke down and paved it. That club is more of a local joint. But the occasional gem can be found. Carolina's and Crystals are the duck in, and duck out. You used to be able to bring your beer in from Carolina's but now you can't. Still like the motif in Crystals though. Sounds like SXM might be making the rebound. 2019 may look promising for a return visit. I was trying to get to Campo, after tabling SXM, but couldn't get the flights I needed so opted to check out Aruba and San Nicholas for a second time. With minimal expectations. However, I've got some spare pocket change. LOL. Where you paid 150 a night at Princess Heights, which is a beautiful property, don't get me wrong, I snagged an apartment in San Nicholas Aruba for 150 for five nights. Highly rated, within walking distance of the action. Place looks decent. At least on the internet! LOL. Anyway, glad you're trip to a turn for the better. With high season approaching in SXM, I'm sure the island is kicking it up a notch to return to normalcy! Check out the Aruba thread in a few weeks for my trip report from there!

Waking up with an amiga after a TLN and having coffee on the deck of the larger ocean front units was always refreshing. Well this place is no more and most of the Dinghy Dock area is destroyed. There are several places up the hill from Oliver's that have been rebuilt. I'm not sure if these are all homes, hotels or be&be's.

This visit I stayed for the first time at the Princess Heights Condos. A little pricey, $150/ night for a one bedroom but the area was nice and private.

The rooms were fantastic. A kind of scary drive up the hill but you could enter through a closed gate without going through any lobby. Very private.

The Casas:

Casa Blanca: I didn't drive up the hill there and the billboard that used to be along the road was nowhere to be found. The only thing that appeared to be open here was the roof. Lots of missing roof sections.

Hypnotique: This used to be my favorite place. Met lots of great chicas here. I never drove to the back but it also appeared to be closed. Very dark at night and no sign on the side of the building. Being the chicken that I am there is no way I was going to explore.

Petite Chateau: I'the never been here and still haven't. If it's the place along the road by the baseball stadium on the way to Carolinas with the big parking lot in front the name on the new lighted sign says El General. The few times I drove by there were no cars in front.

Crystals: Peeked in a couple of times but I only saw a couple of locals at the bar. I did see one BIG girl walking standing outside one time. I didn't spend any time here.
