In guesthouses which have a simple card separated from the key I leave it in the slot. But I do that for practicality only and I don't like the thing in my pocket and I don't leave A / see on for more than 10 minutes when leaving the room. It's just not "right".

Has anyone stayed at the Sexy In The City guest house on Soi 6 and, if so, would you recommend it? On the surface it sounds great - 24 hour bar, good Wifi, AC, 900 baht. But it'd be great to hear of the experiences of others before booking.

The main problem I have with AC is that in nearly all of the hotels I have visited in Chaing Mai, Pattaya, Phuket and even a modern, top hotel in Bangkok is that you need your room key in order to turn on the electricity and, hence, the AC. So, when you enter your room it will be hot and humid. To cool it, you must insert your key into a slot in order to turn on the lights and the AC. When you leave the room, plan on coming back to a hot and humid room when you return.

The keys are generally attached to a small FOB-like thing which contains a magnet. My solution to the power issue is to bring along a small magnet taped to a Popsicle stick (no more 1/4" thick, or 2. 5 mm) that will fit in the slot. (This won't work for the more upscale hotels that use key cards however. You may be able to ask for a second card though.) When I leave my room, and after the room has been made up by the maids, I leave the magnet in the slot and the AC stays on, so when I return, the room is comfortable. OK, this is not being very green, but waiting in a hot room for the things to cool down is not cool.
All hotels where I have stayed in BKK or Pattaya, have given me two card keys even if I am checking in solo as the room is booked for double occupancy. So you can leave one in the power slot at all times.

Part of the reason I plan to limit myself to air conditioned soapie or massage places during the day, and hit the discos with excellent AC late at night.

Any recommendations on places with the best AC? Yeah, I hate the humidity. Heat I can handle. It will be May when I am there. Thanks.

    Sandy Spring Hotel

Sandy Spring Hotel on Soi 13 off Beach Road is quite nice. But a new problem has arisen. I had a nice beach view room with a clear line of sight to the beach and a clear "line of sound" to the newly opened Hooters on Beach Road. Very loud; very late. Just a heads up for those of you that prefer a little peace and quiet.

Don't forget places like Kinnaree Place. AC, clean rooms, nice girls. I found a true gem there last week.

Otherwise the pool area is boring with no bar or other facilities. But hey, this is a condo pool. The construction on the site next to VT6 is quiet at the moment.

Hey, FF. When you say ' hot like hell inside' do you mean inside the apt? Was there no AC inside the apt? I'm going to be staying there in about 4-5 weeks (for about 2. 5 weeks) and I need it to be cold when I sleep! LOL! I booked mine through Dance Watchers though. Also, my unit says it has a large 18,000 BTU AC unit...I sure hope it will cool it down to about 68 F which is my minimum desired temp for sleeping! Lol

    Areca Lodge

Last week was my second stay at Areca. Last year the hotel was OK IMO. This year it sucked. The place is getting rundown. And the clientele was mostly old western people, dead atmosphere. They are building new condos around the pool area. You wake up in a Hilti noise every morning, which sucks big time. The hotel lobby and breakfast room is hot like a sauna, no aircon. The swimming pool water feels like it has been boiled and there is no wind at the pool to cool you down. Pure hell.

Still some nice views available in the room.
