Great info Jonesie. Is there any time in the next few months that is better than another? Planning my first trip to SJ. Thanks for advice. A fellow mongered.

From the looks of this place, I don't think it's going to be chica friendly. Outside chance it's chica tolerable.

Scores' rooms are only $30 these days, and they're chica friendly. The rooms are decent, the bare is new and nice. The MP part of the deal is lacking, but at $30, whatever.

It is under new mgmt but a guy posted on another board in December he didn't have a problem with the girls and no fee. But for roughly the same money, I'd go to Hotel Mona Lisa, better location, def chica friendly, much nicer place, close to the places you'll be going to. It has 90 rooms so unless you are going SuperBowl week-end, you should get in.

It does bear mentioning and / or repeating that La Amistad does NOT allow unaccompanied chicas so it is strictly BYO in that regard.

Jonesie's Brief Hotel Reviews for 2013

This year was a tough year for Costa Rica tourism. Even the well run hotels had to innovate to stay on top. Here's a list of the top monger hotels as I see it. I'the consider mine a pretty educated opinion, but at the end of the day, it is only my opinion. Feel free to have your own.

    1. Hotel Amistad. Still. It was already a well run hotel with a great restaurant. This year, Matt introduced the all inclusive concept and it's a hit. Sunday and Wednesday hosts great deals for the frugal gourmets not staying at the hotel. Still the best place to stay, and now at the best price.

    2. Hotel Cocal. Nice hotel in Jaco that's ground zero for the hobby on the beach. Nice rooms, great restaurant, boutique casino, and very lively bar scene at night. One can usually find 100+ girls at the pool bar on any given night.

    3. Sportsman's Lodge. There are two very different experiences one could have staying at this hotel. The first being the mansion wing of this hotel that offers an upscale, quiet accommodations close enough to the bar to be convenient, and far enough to enjoy serenity. The second being the courtyard rooms that would put this hotel further down the list. Courtyard / bar side rooms are generally noisy, a light to moderate sleeper will hear the last bar patrons retire, and the first breakfast patrons chat. Lively bar scene with between 12-30 girls walking around depending on the hour.

    4. Balmoral. This is an upscale option that charges a guest fee for chicas. Otherwise it would be number 2 on this list. Plush rooms and a nice restaurant.

    5. Zona II. This hotel is only a 4 suite hotel. The nicer rooms from the defunct Little Havana. Has a downstairs bar and cigar room. This is a hotel review, so I'll leave it at that.

    6. Dunn Inn. This hotel has nice rooms and a nice restaurant. Poor management makes the place a ghost town. Such a shame.

    7. Del Rey. This is not a nice hotel. At all. But, it's still the default choice and ground zero for the hobby in San Jose. Shouldn't be, but it is.

    8. Sleep Inn. This is a decent hotel that's proximity to the Rey makes it relevant. Charges a chica fee. If you've got the cash (it's $35 per chica) , and want a cleaner / newer room than the Rey, this is your place.

    9. Scores. The more modest rooms of the old Little Havana. Beautiful new bar, same rooms. Place looks great, so why is it still empty?

    10. Mona Lisa. This was a great idea, with awful execution. The wrong turns are too many to count.

    11. Hotel Castillo. Some wonder out loud how this place is still open. I wonder how it's still standing. Another year of neglect makes a once charming hotel into yet another lost opportunity.

    12. Hotel Morazan. I do have to respect one thing about this place, they don't pretend to be anything more than a barely inhabitable dwelling that markets to the dregs.

No problem if your reservation is for 2. They will make copies of your passport and her cedula. If you know her full name, include that in your reservation and it should go smooth.

I don't think the Balmoral is chica friendly and hasn't been for some time. Great location. Maybe the remodel, now quite a while ago helped, but I never thought much of the place before. Stayed there once. Common doors and paper thin walls are always bad for sound and my hunch the remodel didn't change that. Call the desk and ask them, it ain't like they're going to be shocked by the question.

Try the Mon Lisa, re-opened, no chica free, much newer then the Balmoral, close to the action. Popular with the guys that are chasing tail.

Going over the super bowl weekend with a bunch of friends who are flying in, so far we are spread over several hotels because of the "busy weekend"

Anyone who is going to be there can PM, there will be 6 or 7 of us looking to party.

Well looks like the Balmoral lost all of our business

even though the outfit is an individual choice and it reflects a personal taste, the way a guest dresses generates an impact over the hotel's image. with the intention of keeping a sober and nice ambiance for all of our dear guests, in the public areas of the hotel, we have established a dress code with simple and specific parameters to follow.

each person and each set of clothes are different, so the decision about proper or not will be on the front desk manager at the moment. this decision will be final and the management will reserve the right of admission in particular cases.

    guests.

we ask our guests to please follow these simple requests, while in our public areas and el patio restaurant:

    1) always wear shoes.

    2) avoid shirts without sleeves or revealing clothes. women must avoid very short skirts or open front shirts.

    3) do not wear brilliant, transparent clothes or swimming suits.

    4) avoid clothes with racist or discriminating messages.

    visitors.

a visitor is a person which has been authorized for a guest to visit the guests' room for a short period of time. all visitors in order to access the hotel, must fully comply with the dress code and must be registered on the book of visitors of the hotel, in order to do this, the visitor needs a valid id, it means, the passport or cedula in case of a local person. **** can register only in their parents' companion with the valid documentation. no ****.

visitors can access a room without their parents even with the guests' approval. for safety reasons, only one visitor.

at the time is allowed per room.

if a visitor wants to go into a room or even sleep overnight, there will be an extra charge of $30 plus tax per night and hotel policies must be compiled.

    against sexual exploitations.

at balmoral hotel, we believe that sexual exploitation of human beings, infringes the fundamental goals of tourism so we have a commitment against sexual exploitation of kids and teenagers under the 7899 law.

the hotel will cancel any agreement with companies that somehow sponsor or promote sexual exploitation. also, the hotel reserves the right to cancel reservations for passengers that with their inappropriate behavior, affect the service to other guests.

thank you for your comprehension and cooperation. management

I saw the other posts but they were getting close to a year old so just want to check.

I was thinking of Hemingway Inn or Hotel Diana Inn but just wanted to make sure you can bring some one back with low or no fee.

If you know any others, I'm open to suggestions.

    Cheers
Hemingway is Chica Friendly, I stayed there and they charged $10 chica fee, make her leave her Cedula at the front desk and that is a good thing so the girl does not drug you or steal from you. The beds at Hemingway are not that comfortable, thin mattress, no box spring, just a platform with a thin mattress on top but you get what you pay for in Costa Rica.

SJ has no shortage of cheap hotels with no chica fees. I would cross hotel Diana off. Hemingway is cheap, and old-maybe rustic to be fair. A lot of guys tolerate the Morazon. I haven't read this entire thread in a while but I am sure all the well known cheapies in our usual areas are listed, as well as the medium priced. If they are cheap in SJ, they are so for a reason. Spend $20 more a night and you'll enjoy your trip a lot more.

I was hoping someone could comment on whether or not Amistad has an elevator? Any experiences having to go up to the penthouse with a tica and no elevator? Thanks. Also does Amistad have porn in the rooms? 420 tolerant?
