So you think you are so smart, with such a high IQ that you would pass with flying colours for such a test to get your visa to the Philipines, eh? Those professional thieves will get you once day, simply because your aloftness would show off and attract the wolves.

We thought we were seasoned travellers, we thought we were being extremely vigilant, and yet after decades of travelling we finally met our match, and were 'robbed'. You could one day get the same or similar experience anywhere anytime when you least expect it, but AC is to my experience more likely to be the place for any cocky traveller to fall for these con artists.

We just want to relate our experience so other members can be even more careful and learn from our mistake. We certainly didn't invite any insult to our intelligence from other members!

So it didn't happen on Fields Avenue, as I suspected. You voluntarily got into a vehicle of someone who tricked you while standing on Fields and they then took you somewhere else to take care of business.

I don't want to say you deserved it, because no one really does, but there is a such thing as natural selection and thinning of the herd.

Common sense and keeping your wits about you are requirements of modern life, especially if you travel, whether that be to Harlem or Angeles City, or anywhere else.

In decades of traveling to dozens of countries, some MUCH worse than the Philippines, I have never once been in an incident like this. But then again, I would never get into a trike that called out to me (only take them when you specifically need one, with you choosing the trike) , ESPECIALLY in front of a money exchange, or with guys promising me "college girls" while standing on a street with 15, 000 girls 19-26 ready to be barfined. Where did you possibly think they could take you that would be "better"?

Never forget that you're walking around with 2-3 months wages for the average Filipino in your pockets, pissing it away like it means nothing. How do you really expect these people to relate to you?

I also have literally "decades of travelling to dozens of Countires", and this was also the very 1st time such a thing has ever happened to me. So, OK, you are smart, but don't be too cocky, mate, it can happen to you when you least expect it.

My friend and I definitely didn't deserve it, and we were not stupid. It's just that these scam artists are getting smarter by the day. On hind thoughts, of course we shouldn't have gotten into their trike, but att hat moment, when we had 2 uncoordinated minds (ours) working against their coordinated minds and rehearsed routine, and when we heard them speaking a bit of our language, and said they worked at the hotel we were staying in, our trusts started to develop.

We definitely learnt our lessons, as we kept telling ourselves, and would be even more vigilant in future. Don't know about my friend, but my greatest lesson is to avaojd AC like the plague!

On all of my 60-70 trips to AC I have always used a money changer where I can go inside, so that nobody can see me with $100 notes or huge amounts of pesos in my hand. Never had a problem. And I don't care about a 5 or 10ps better rate in a open space and / or weird looking surrounding. Just not worth it.

Anyway, these days I have a peso current account in PI, so I can use the ATM's in a proper bank, no need money changers anymore.

I will be in AC in about ten days and just started chatting on DIA yesterday. Many of them seem like normal girls looking for a relationship. Is it easy to score with them when you meet them. Its been decades since I've had anything but a P4P girl and don't have the faintest ideal on how to get into the pants of a regular girl. My usual approach is to exchange some pleasantry. You were on Fields (where you were safe) and you got into some guys trike to get a better exchange rate and a cheaper lady. You ended up getting neither. I think you're lucky you only lost your money. Your story is a good reminder for the 99% of mongers who already know not to go w / strangers on a trike ride w / a pocket full of money. If you are gullible you will have problems like this everywhere. What you did makes no sense but you did receive an important lesson. I'm glad you're ok and thanks for info.

My personal operations are:

Withdraw two days cash at a time from an ATM. Store the majority of it in the hotel room safe. Also stow my passport, wallet, licences, I'd, tix etc in the safe. I keep a small amount of PHP stored separately.

When I go out, I'm just carrying PHP notes for drinks and bar fine.

Good advice, but I also suggest carrying a legible photo copy of your passport. Although I was never asked by any authorities for identification while I was out and about it's a good idea to have it on you; and you may need it to exchange money at the banks. If you don't want to carry a wallet then just put the copy in a small plastic baggy to keep it dry.

These guys rarely pick on random strangers. They see people flashing cash and home in.

As has been said so many times in this forum, keep a low profile and don't become a target.

"Quite a bit of cash" is not 'a lot of cash'. It was supposed to be for the day's usage. BF, drinks, food, tips, viagara, wirelss broadband recharge, etc would come to close to PHP10, 000. We needed to have enough cash to enjoy the scene. That's about how much we had and most of it was taken.

We didn't 'flash' the cash. We took out the dollars to change for pesos at the money changer's. So, oh yes, another thing. Don't change money from the street people, not even from those roadside money changers, go to the bank, at the airport, or within the hotel.
