It's not just the uneducated hookers who are dingbats. The educated, professional class pinays in my country are not much better. I have come across lots of accounting, finance and admin types and they have no common sense or general knowledge. That's with a four-year college degree. They can follow instructions, blend in culturally and will generally get the basic job done. Just don't go giving them complex problems to solve. I guess the better quality, well connected ones don't leave the Philippines.

The Phils is a basket case and will never reach above its current situation until the populace collectively decides to get its shit together. Mongers can benefit from that but it makes me sick.

My money is on Koreans / Japs / Chinese turning the Phils into an economical slave bonanza for the next 50-100 years.

On any given week, I use to get about 2 request from mostly the same 5 girls that I had met previously.

I have found that Common Sense is not so common after all. My comment is not directed at the Philippines, it is everywhere.

As was mine, I first heard the expression regarding a Nepalese engineer with a PhD who had trouble using a standard Motorola brick two way radio, even after watching me demonstrate it twice. (he wanted to hold it like a cell phone rather than hold it like a radio.).

Also common courtesy is not all that common either , world wide.

I wonder if that is a result of being functionally illiterate, they have to actually think through everything themselves, they can look at pictures and at the object, they can ask people about it verbally and they can experiment with the object, but they cannot read the explanation so they have to rely on pure reasoning. Then they have to remember it because they cannot write it down.

Could be a good master's degree thesis here for someone to see if there this can be demonstrated experimentally.

I was stuck on Samar for two extra days because the plane from Cebu did not arrive because it was grounded due to a typhoon, Found out the plane wasn't coming after getting to the airport with luggage. Just roll with it, Checked back into the hotel and spent another 2 days with my Samar sweetie in bed. Lost my paid in advance hotel room in Cebu but hey, it's the Philippines. If this kind of thing would bother you a lot it's best for you not to come.

Actually, my 4'8" princess has been the source of most frustration. One would think she'd be able to explain the basics of how things work here but she doesn't. Any good advice I've received has been from talking to ex-pats here. If / when I do re-visit, I'll go solo. The little woman is a clueless dingbat.

Maybe you need to choose better. There are the girls that have no clue. There are also the girls that are able to organize themselves and negotiate. You will need to come up with your own testing criteria. Set the new girl a couple of tests. Things like:

Can you go find us a driver to take us to Manila please.

Do you the best way to get to (somewhere random).

Please book is and Check into this hotel.

There is someone for everyone in Philippines. Ask and you shall receive.
