The truth is, the Korean sex trade has declined (and gotten more expensive) in the last two decades simply because, with its fast-growing economy, their women don't have to resort to prostitution.

Much as I would like to agree with you, I don't. I never said that the US was shutting down the sex trade in Korea, rather it was putting pressure on the Korean government to shut it down. The reason for doing this in Korea, and not in Thailand or the Philippines, is that there are 30, 000+ American military members in Korea. The same cannot be said for these other mongering locales. But fear not, as Uncle Goober pointed out, Uncle Sam will target all mongering areas and attempt to shut down our hobby under the guise of stopping "[CodeWord908]." The US may not have any real power to force other countries to do things, but they do a great job of threatening, or black mailing those countries to get their "Holier than thou" way.

If you still have any doubt about the US involvement in the shut down of P4P in Korea, think about this. Why did the time of the Korean crack down on prostitution coincide with the US Military's issuance of their "zero tolerance policy on prostitution"? And why was it that the Korean authorities concentrated on busting foreigners more than they did on their own countrymen?

I was barhopping in Lapasha when my waitress friend introduced me to a friend of her in civies that stop to say Hi to her. She's an ex-bartender from Forbidden city and wanted to barhop there. I pull out P100 and my friend pulls out P100 from her purse. Then I noticed the waitress hands back the P100 to my friend and ask me for the other P100, they did this 2 times back and forth. They talk in tagalog, then I ask whats the problem. She say my friend say you foreighner and you should buy my drink. WTF! Its none of her gotdamn bizness who pays for a drink! Then to top it off she wanted a tip with a bad attitude. I was getting annoyed by then because she standing over me damn near demanding I pay. Well, I've seen groups of Asians barfine half the bar. Nevertheless, there are many reasons for what you describe below. Here is just one:

They are somehow associated by business and this was an afterwork party to build rapport. This type of business + drink is pretty common in East Asia. In fact, the entire tab may have been put on someone's expense account. As for taking a gal, I guess all your colleagues would know what you were doing, so it could be risky if one is somehow otherwise attached. And if they are living in Philippines, they might have a wife or gf to go home to.

Its got to be culture. If you walk into KTV places in Manila, you will see korean or japanese gents sitting around in a group, with a group of girls. The girl's aren't for takeout, just chat. In one place on Adriatico I had to pay p1000 for 30 minutes of time with a pretty girl. High LD price to buy her a drink. She told me she gets a cut of the LD and also p100 of the p1000 'seat-fine' (call it what you will). The ko / jap guys get one girl for each guy in their party, and sit and buy LD's for several hours, then walk out drunk and go back to their hotels, sans chica. Makes no sense to me, each gent is running up a p10, 000 tab for the evening in one joint for a few hours of fun, then not getting laid.

It is at the end of the street that runs along side the Orchid Resort, off Fields.

It is a small place, open 24 hours. Open bar, no dancers. Provides girls for ST in upstairs rooms for 700 pesos, girl and room included.

Just 3 weeks ago my girlfriend and her policewomen friend were trying to leave on a bought and paid for tour package to Hong Kong for a week. After being harrased at the immigration gate for the better part of an hour they were finally allowed to pass and proceed to the gate. They thought they were free to go and then just before the boarding procedures began the immigration officals came back and pulled them in once more. They ended up missing their flight and not making the tour.

My girl believes they were just trying to extort money from them but who knows.

There's open smoking in the Pham Ngu Lao area (backpacker central).

In Vietnam, it depends on the area. I was told that it's okay in Saigon (verified) and Hanoi. Over there, the police care more about the hard drugs.

As far as the Japanese customers go, they ruin a place quickly. Monster bar tabs and LDs with all the girls in attendance while barely copping a feel is normal at the KTV bars here in Hawaii. I've read 2 stories in which the guy was scammed for money by the police by just looking and sniffing at the weed on the street. He didn't even buy. Never do anything on the street.

As a newbie tourist, I would definitely worry about the set up.

That being said, I was told that it's "safe" if you live there, and you have a trusted dealer come over and deliver.

It's illegal there. I wouldn't do it. If you want to smoke a fatty without hassles, go to Cambodia or Saigon.

That's most of my concern right there. Weed is illegal everywhere I have ever lived or traveled since I started caring. Good to know about the looking and sniffing thing a nd maybe I find someone like-minded who lives there and is kind enough to deliver. Looks like I'll have to go deep into my bag of tricks. FYI I definitely wouldn't burn in public in Saigon. 4 years ago I could walk down almost any street with a cloud of blue smoke trailing me and the only notice I got was from a Marine standing outside the consulate building. Now the police are a bit smarter and it would probably cost you about $10-$20 to bribe your way out of arrest if you're familiar with the town.

I guess it is in their culture. Many a girls I met in AC told me that the Japanese and Koreans just want to get drunk and go to bed. If they want to do the deed it is over in a matter of minutes.

At the same time they are very good tippers and treat the girls very well. So much so that some girls only want to go with Japanese and Koreans.

I don't know anything about the Japanese, other than what the Filipinas working in Korea told me. According to them, the Japanese were much more preferred over the Koreans.

I lived in Korea for 11 of the past 20 years. The sex industry used to be a big thing there. But things have changed greatly over the last 6 years. The government, under pressure from the US, has cracked down on the blatant sex trade, shutting down many red light districts and other types of establishments. The sex trade still exists, but at a much higher cost and in more secretive venues. This probably accounts for the larger number of Koreans in the Philippines. Not to mention the fact that Korea also enforces an anti-adultery law. Such a law cannot be enforced on the Korean men in the Philippines, as it requires the Korean police to catch the man in the act.

In the years that I lived in Korea, I was not able to gain entry to many venues that were Korean only. However, of the ones that I did get into with Korean friends and in-laws, I saw lots of money being spent by all the men there. Not many would leave with the girls they spent the money on. It's more of a status symbol for them to have pretty, young women hanging on their arms. I never understood the idea of spending all that money on a girl, and not getting anything from her though.
