In addition, the Bureau of Immigration here has recently tightened the rules for foreigners being employed in the Philippines, so working legally here is even more difficult than it was a few months ago....<SNIP> virtually all development contractors bring in expats to manage key elements of their projects, which is how I ended up working here.

GE is correct. Likewise for me. I came to Manila for a ST contract for 3 months in 1996 and I am still here because I was offered a longer-term position and, more importantly, I was prepared to suffer the "cons" of living in the Philippines because the "pros" outweighed them. Note also that availability of females was NOT a factor in my decision. I am also lucky to be getting contracts to work in various other parts of SE Asia, Central Asia and the Pacific.

Note also that once you decide to work here your freedom to behave like a bachelor on holiday needs to be balanced by care that you will not get into any situation where your professionalism and reputation might be impugned. The rumour mill (tsismis / grapevine / bamboo network) is exceptionally robust in the Philippines and you need to be always thinking with the brain in the head rather than the one in your trousers, so much so that any mongering I engage in is usually offshore nowadays.

With the low cost of travel now it's not necessary to live exactly where you want to play. It can certainly be very beneficial to live in a high paying area (say HK or Singapore) and earn enough to fund frequent excursions.

There are tonnes of expat jobs in Asia but be warned that living and working permanently in Asia is TOTALLY different to a 2 week holiday. If any one is seriously considering it, just look for companies with international offices and roles that fill skill gaps that are not in Asia. You certainly want to be transferred from the West. Being hired directly in Asia forgoes a lot of expat benefits.

Of course, many are also enjoying the retiree / contractor life in Asis as well.
