True, especially in Copa. So it helps to change the way people look at you. I practice by spending time with friends who own shops or work at the Uni.

Here's some suggestions:

Have a strong interest in something that justifies your reason for existing / being in Rio. If you were doing your home job (something you know about and can spin convincingly on presumably) but doing it while you were here, what would you be doing? Researching future work? Looking for job opportunities on behalf of your company? Yourself? How about doing some part-time location work?

One of the first questions you get (if you don't look an utter sleaze) is, Are you here for work or holiday? You can be a bit hesitant and say a bit of both. Keep it very vague. Let them think you are meant to be working even if you have all the time in the world. When you have enough of her for the day and have some urgent business in 4x4 it stops all arguments. Centro is a good place to be 'doing business' - she is unlikely to just bump into you unless she also has a job in Centro.

Take a genuine interest in Brasil for god sake. I am almost allergic to mongers whose sole purpose is mongering - nothing wrong with going to Rio solely for mongering, it's just me. But seriously consider having an experience of a lifetime that doesn't involve pussy. Brasil can change the way you think about the world. Once you genuinely develop a love of the music, the dancing, carnaval, the culture, the geography, the language, the politics - anything else that interests you - you will start to radiate that and be able to undercut gdps whose sole 24hr mental preoccupation is selling their bodies. For the more human gdps or gfe types, it establishes a level of communication that is genuine.

Get to know how mongering is viewed by mainstream (non-mongering) Brasilian society. This enables you to take the same slightly high ground attitude when it suits you. Your gdp feels like an exception and your non-gdp 'knows' your not the sort that would go with a 'prostitute'. (Remember as well, any gdp lower down the food chain than your gdp is a 'prostitute' whereas your gdp is not. One feels sorry for such people. The very term tends to mean, 'the sort of sexually active person we would not associate with' - which is a bit broader than anything as specific as the exchange of money.)

Have an excuse for staying in Copa. Everyone in Copa needs one. Have an area you'd rather stay in (mine's Botafogo) but point out how Copa is more convenient for a foreigner.

Have some 'friends' (imaginary ones will do) that you may have to meet from time to time to hang out with and discuss serious areas of non-mongering stuff (which you will have have set up in advance in her mind using the above pretexts).

Have a non-gringo topic to enthuse about at the start of any conversation. 'The lovely people' or 'the beaches' or 'the weather' is lame. One visit to a museum is enough to set you up for plenty of meets. Especially as her mental level is mostly in the gutter a few centimetres above your natural resting place.

This will not suit everyone, but for those who like this route and have the inclination, you may discover it is a lot of fun! You may almost start to find your time in Rio is even more rewarding than you imagined.

There probably isn't too many countries excluded from acting out of character in Rio!!! Americans & many other have embarrassed there home provinces while visiting the Land of Beautiful 'Bundas'

Yes, that´s very much so. Some people adapt and some either don´t or don´t care to - it´s not that country-specific. The numerical prominence of US-Americans (and my own non-US -ness) makes their examples more obvious to me I´m afraid. But, to turn it right around, I once had a Brasilian dance teacher back home who thought nothing of arriving late, ´making up for it´ - as she thought - with her charisma. What would have been ok in Rio sat ill with western ways, where people generally run their days to a very tight schedule.

I think it is about leaving your ethos behind and adapting to a new one. If a person strongly identifies with the ethos of their home country, they will tend to try to impose it on the country they are visiting. They may think it is ´superior´ and that they just make ´allowances´ for ´backward Brasilians´. Partly perhaps my deep respect for Brasil and a determination to learn lessons that I think the West has forgotten skew me towards identifying with the Brasilian ethos as much as possible when I am a guest in this wonderful country (I also like your phrase ´Land of Beautiful Bundas lol´!). I doesn´t help that some sad (rich) Brasilians really want to be Westerners. But I suppose they are not my role models . . .

Hey, Euro, thanks for the compliment. I thought I was quite careful not to Yankee-bash, explaining how it was me that was personally irritated rather than blaming him? I think it´s partly statistical - there are more yanks out of western tourists here than any other nation. But they don´t have any exclusive rights on being irritating. A bloke from my own country was whining in the internet cafe yesterday - this wasn´t right and that wasn´t right. And to top it all he knew f-all about computers or staying connected while abroad. I eventually put my mp3 player and earphones on.

I certainly don´t hate Yankees. Citizens of the US - if we can generalise - lead the world in many qualities - generosity being one of them. I also saw a movie about the building of I think it was Hoover(?) dam, which I thought was a great testament to all qualities US-American.

THere´s a phrase ´only in America´ which often means something whacky but also includes unusual achievements. I think that says quite a lot. Use the equivalent phrase - eg, ´only in Britain´ and you may be referring to something pretty dumb or dreary or whatever.

But for all my admiration of US-America, that doesn´t override the loud insular attitudes demonstrated by many Yanks in Brasil (such as the one I mentioned). Take Costa-de-la-somewhere and you have many north Europeans being just as obnoxious. The night before last I had a drunken Australian insisting we were ´brothers´. I assured him, we were not.

On the other hand, there is much fraternal goodwill between forum members I have met. I think the interchange maybe helps us all be aware of our weaknesses. I initially explored Rio and other places in Brasil alone, so often kept my mouth shut long enough to observe the reverse in others. If I´d been with a buddy it might have taken longer.

And I'm glad you posted this myself, because I thought you did or do have some issues with "Americans!" Because in some past post you seemed to glamorize the faults of Americans while in Brasil(Rio)! While during my many travels to Rio, I have seen just as much Irriating Behavior from various European Regions..... And this is not a FLAME by any means, just pointing out some facts I have seen with my own eyes & I'm sure yours & others as well!!!!(You just seemed to point out Americans Faults or short comings all the time & put a Blind Eye towards Europeans) There probably isn't too many countries excluded from acting out of character in Rio!!!
