this is the time when all those 'irrelevant' laws are used against you. any pirated cd found in your condo, porn or anything found at your place at work... they will dig deep.

face loss is an issue. police etc must find something. so usually they confirep001e all pc's and then get to work.

it is not arrest what they after, but squeezing you/company on bribes. another example - most often overlooked - is pirated software.

pirated software falls under criminal law. if convicted you loose your work permit and you will get expelled within 24 hours.

porn etc is also criminal law!

in short: to minimize your exposure to liabilities any business owner or employee is well advised to follow the law 100%

....very accurate post......a quick story;

this starts out as an on street parking dispute. the owner of a business tells some guy to stop parking his car in front of the shop because customers passing by cannot see the entrance. the on street parking was legal however....so the guy continued to park. now....there was some damage on the guy's car when he left the area one day. these are both thai's by the way.

so now, the guy with the damaged car is really upset.......next thing you know, the police are at the other guy's place of business and a woman is found inside copying one cd onto another cd using a computer in the place. then there are three police cars.....shortly thereafter abut 10 police of different ranks inside the shop.

i spoke to the shop owner a short time thereafter. he claimed that it cost him 20,000 b in bribes to make the situation go away. he was going to be charged with a serious crime of bootlegging cd's and dvd's (ha...this in a country where you can buy bootleg stuff in pantip, mbk, tuk.com, almost any street, etc.).....even though he claimed that it was only the one lady copying a music cd for her boyfriend....and only one. the shop is a legitimate business and is located across the street from where i used to live. i can see that they are not in the bootleg business based on the size of the shop and my personal observations of the place from my balcony. it turns out that the original guy who was parking his car there had a brother in law who was in the police.

in thailand the day can get bad...very fast.....and these were thai's!!

If I were you I'd be more concerned about key loggers then this rule.

I use an air card personally so rarely use an IC anywhere but recently I walked into one on Soi 22 to print some items. Walked in, used the computer, pad a few baht and walked out. No ID, the place was filled with foreigners, didn't see anyone use ID at all.

Sounds like the same laws that make it illegal to sell copied discs (this surely does not happen in LOS)... a few baht in the right hands and their stall stays open no matter what...

If so, and assuming you also have to comply, you may want to consider explicitely warning your guests about it.
You may also want to keep an up-to-date list of working proxies, for those customers needing one (without even knowing it)

Hmmmm....I don't know of all this rules, but ... let me tell you how I see this issue:

The law was made for the Westerners, Thailand is much better in everything, so don't worry, USA. We trace what people do even in internet cafe's (that is completely impossible, btw.).

We remember this American Senator coming to Bangkok, getting in touch with some prostitution areas (of course not because he wanted to, it was just by chance LOL LOL LOL ) ... and then suddenly the Health Minister of the Thaksin administration announced that there is no prostitution in Thailand at all ... bla bla bla.

Now - in Livingstone's Lodge all this is a bit different, this is German Management. Of course we register, what WebSites you access, and we have this In-Room cameras to directly transfer all activities in the room to the internet - perfectly German organized and working ... so don't worry, we comply to the Thai law - hundred percent! We are - the real Thai's.

the government approaches sys admin's. there is a little booklet in Thai explaining the why's. being good citizens they are comitted.

so its right at the first level, company with network. suppose to file all in case gov. checks.

i figure simply another angle to squeeze money out of companies - just in case.

Kudos to you EP. I think all of us should make some time for the less fortunate (and I don't mean the pros). One of the best reports I have seen.

I agree. This has made me think a bit about what I could do. I give to charity in the UK a lot so why not in Thailand when they can be so much more unfortunate that westerners. Think I'll follow your lead and donate something to this place when I'm over in a couple of weeks. It's not like I cant afford it and after all it would be nothing compared to the cash I spend on one of these trips.
