thanks, yes edge is the fast speed. i've gotten the edge connection on dtac pretty much everywhere i've been except remote places in the north where i use the gprs connection. dtac said a couple of weeks ago that they'd have it everywhere in los by the end of the year, but who knows.
i use a pc, but i've read that they work just as well with a mac pc.

I've been of experimenting with internet connections the last couple of times I've come to the LOS with my laptop and have pretty much come to the conclusion that rather than relying on wi-fi connections in hotels or Starbucks I'm more comfortable using a gprs or EDGE card. A gprs card basically turns your laptop into a cellphone and you can get a connection anywhere.
I posted a little about this once before, but now I've got it more figured out and can report that it works great. I wouldn't recommend it for guys just staying a week or so, but if you're in BKK, Pattaya or wherever for a while or need to work odd hours and be mobile it beats the alternatives and is pretty cheap compared to having to use Starbuck's.
You need three things:
1.) An unlocked gprs or EDGE card. You can buy these at home for about $200.00 from a telecom, on eBay for a lot less, or Pantip for about 8,000 bht. I've used a Sierra Wireless 750 and a Sony Ericsson GC 83.
2.) An Thai internet connection like the 300 bht KSC prepaid ONECARD deal that you can get at 7/11.
3.) A pre or post paid cell phone account with a Thai telecom. I use DTAC and can top up with the cards at 7/11 or whatever.

Basically all you need to do is put the DTAC sim card into the gprs card, pop that into the slot in your laptop and wait few seconds for it to find a signal then log on to your isp account. In BKK and Pattaya the connection is almost as fast as as good wi-fi connection and in Chiang Rai I found it faster.
Its cool because it works everywhere your cell phone works and you don't need to be wired to anything. You wind up paying 1bht per minute for the DTAC connection and some miniscule amout per minute for the minutes on the prepaid internet account.
Like I said, its probably too much of a hassle if you're just staying short time, but its cool if need some mobility or are up north where anything but dial up is hard to find.

I feel like I spent days in the airplane this time. Does it actually turn in to a longer flight the more you come? Plane touched down at 11:30 pm and then we took a tour of the tarmac for a half hour. Doesn't the air traffic controller know that the bars close at 1am? Oh, it's a conspiracy. By the time I got out of the airport it was 1am. Went to the taxi stand and got my cab, does anyone fall for the taxi hawkers inside, hope not. Went to the Majestic Grande, Majestic Suites couldn't take my last minute reservation but Anaan, the manager hooked me up with their other hotel the Grande for 2700 Baht, less than there quoted discout price. Not sure if they do this for everyone or due to my previous stays and making reservations for friends.

Majestic Grande is nice. Not the JW but a 4 star hotel. I've seen some complaints about the elevator and yes it's a little slow but chill, your in Bangkok. Pool is descent and the breakfast is good. There are a lot more families and couples than the Majestc Suites but that's too bad for them, Atleast someone is having fun there.

Got out of the hotel at 1:30. Nana bars were shut down and in general the area seemed to be quieter than my previous trip this summer. Maybe the scene moved? Anyone else notice this? Went to Nana hotel and the disco was open until 3am. Some lookers there, a few, place was packed. Finally talked to a cute 20 year old right at 3am and the bar closed. She took me to Sin Bar around the corner but it was closed too, she seemed surprised. I tried to buy some beer, no one would sell. Someone told me it was a holiday, I don't know. The girl wanted to take me to another bar, or me take her I should say. I got the feeling I was gonna be dragged around and forced to spend money on her. I'm not cheap but I can have that in the states, it's called a girlfriend. I hadn't slept on the plane and didn't want to play games so I cut her loose and got some much needed rest. Last note was this. I was just outside Nana disco (angels) and this guy, mid 30's early 40's talked with me. I'm here alone so I'm up for any conversation in english...usually. He said he was trying to get out and that someone had pick-pocketed him and he had no money. He said he was looking for contributions for the airport tax to be able to go home. This guy however, was practically waving red flags on his own. As soon as I heard his story, as he was hitting me up, I said sorry, I'm not down with that. He said, "what, not down with helping a fellow American who is in need?" I wanted to clock the guy! A true piece of Sh*t! The more I declined him, the more persistant with his story he got, slightly aggresive. He babbled away for a minute until the girl I met came along. She then said she saw the guy taking money or at least trying to take money from other people and creeped her and others out. When you see people with missing limbs politely begging for money and then this JackA** comes along with his guilt trip BS and lies...well hopefully karma will catch up to him. I have no doubt he was scamming. First of all, he was in the disco. Then, after I got rid of him, I bumped into him again in 7-11 where he was BUYING something, piece of crap. He was hitting someone up there too. Anyway he's a skinny, gangly looking guy with wavy hair and a pony tail. He's losing his hair in the front as well as losing whatever self respect and dignity he ever had. Be on the look out and tell him to [CodeWord140]-off. I wasn't blatant enough with my retort at the time. Next time I should bring some counterfiet money along for just such a scenario. Well that's all for now. Anyone want to grab a beer, PM me.

flew into bangkok at about 10 pm in november (try to go in the off-season- not as crowded, more hotel availability at cheaper rates). shared a cab from the departure level (avoided the baht 50 fee on the arrival level) with a kuwaiti guy i met on the immigration line. i checked in at the hotel manhattan. they didn’t ask where the other occupant of the room was (i had booked a double). gave me a junior suite, even though i had only booked a standard room. nice enough, though could use more light.

noise from the construction is definitely audible in the morning but not unbearably so. the pool is pretty small and you have to go down a set of stairs on the outside of the hotel to get to it. the breakfast is pretty good: fruit, made to order eggs, other breakfast stuff that i don’t ever eat but could be acceptable to others.

hotel is definitely girl friendly (when i came in with a girl later the old guy who checked me in gave me a thumbs up, apparently approving of the girl. there was no problem either when i brought in another girl to replace the first one).

after checking in at our hotels, i met up with the kuwaiti guy at rainbow 4 in nana plaza about 12:30 am. i didn’t find the girls very attractive. the kuwaiti guy tried to get two different girls to go with him but each wanted either 3000 or 4000 baht, so he passed. we then went outside to the nana hotel parking lot to wait for the parade of girls from the bars and clubs to start. we didn’t see anyone worthwhile come out, so the kuwaiti guy started talking to the touts that hang around the parking lot and was told about a club that was open after hours. the tout called it the mtk club (it’s actually called the stardust club, just off ratchdamri past petchaburi). i am always leery of these touts and tried to talk him out of it but he really wanted to go so we went.

there were about 20-30 girls sitting and standing at the end of the club, with tables and stools for the customers in front of them (sort of like a fishbowl without the glass partition). the papasan told my friend that the price was 2500 baht for all night. he talked him down to 2000 baht per girl for two girls. my friend picked two girls and left. i was torn between one girl with a nice face and another with great tits (i didn’t want a double because i didn’t want a possible hassle at the hotel and i was saving my energy for a session at the eden club the next day before i left for cambodia). chose the face and left with her after getting the papasan to agree to 2000 baht for all night.

had an ok session with the face. she then started to get dressed. i said what happened to the all night i paid for. she said that she had to get home because she had to go to school the next day. i took her back to the club and told the papasan what happened. he, the mamasan, and the girl began arguing while i stood there. the mamasan then took me into the club and said pay another 500 baht and get a new girl until late in the morning. said ok, gave her the 500 baht and a 100 baht tip to the mamasan (at her prompting), and took the great tits to the hotel. (one of the girls the kuwaiti guy had left with was there when i brought back my girl, so apparently this girl also had some problems with the all night concept.)

the great tits was kind of standoffish at first because she was insulted that she was my second choice. after i reassured her that it could have gone either way, we finally started a session. during the session i pulled out and found the condom covered with blood. she then said that her period must of have just started (yeah, sure). that ended the session but i was too tired to go back to the club and get another girl and she had such great tits that i was content to just get oral and have access to her tits until the morning.

again found the pretty girls in pattaya to be few and far between. checked the beer bars, discos, soapies, soi 6, and soi post office. i found the best girls to be at the soapies, and even then there were only a few that looked good to me, and one gorgeous girl in a soi 6 bar. the soapies (sabai room, sabai dee, and sabai land) are all still 1600 baht for 1.5 hours.

the best looking girl was one from southern thailand at the sabai room. when i asked her why she didn’t work in bangkok and make more money since she was so beautiful, she said that she was too dark (she wasn’t that much darker, if any, than i am, and i am pretty fair) for thai men and would not do well there. their loss; that’s what they get for looking at skin color and not whether the face is beautiful.

amidst all the hags on soi 6 i saw a beautiful girl who appeared to be leaving her bar. i entered and one of the hags latched on to me. i told her i wanted the beautiful one and she got her before she left. i asked how much and was told 300 baht for the room and 600 baht for her for an hour. i told her that it used to be 600 baht total but she wouldn’t lower the price so i said ok (i wasn’t going to not bang her for 200-300 baht, considering how few pretty girls i was finding). she looked even better naked- great body. ok session, but the hour ended when i finished, not after an actual hour. didn’t find her again when i went back.

at the club i saw one girl i liked and chose her. the papasan tried to raise the price to 2500 baht but i told him that i was told the price was baht 2000. he said okay and i left with the girl (probably overpaid but cheap enough). hotel security took her id, no hassles. had a session with her. then she starts to get dressed. i said where the hell are you going, i paid for all night. she said that it was only one shot. since i didn’t know where the club was or the name, i couldn’t take her back. i probably could have told security not to give her her id back to make her stay but she wasn’t that good the first time and any subsequent ones would have been even worse, so i chalked it up to experience (and tiredness and over-eagerness) and let her go. moral: confirm with the girl, not the papasan, how long she is going to stay.

moved to the woraburi hotel, down (way down, a 10-15 minute walk, although the hotel has a free shuttle from the hotel to nana plaza) on soi 4. adequate room and breakfast, ok pool, a little noisy at night because of street traffic. $30 double (high season rate, only hotel available).

made the round of the soapies- poseidon, mirage, emmanuelle, hi-lite, caesars, nataree, amsterdam (formerly champs elysees), cleopatra, cupidy, embassy, halem, angara, catherines, la defense, mona lisa, and victorias secret (?), about a mile from la defense (left at the 7-11 past la defense). i found the best looking girls to be not at the expensive soapies but the fishbowl girls at catherines and the sideline girls at nataree. there were some good-looking girls at cupidy but the idiot who talked to me said the price was 2700 baht for the fishbowl girls and 3200 baht for the sideline girls. i told him to go to hell and left. there was one sideline girl at angara that i did- 2000 baht for ok session.

i found the girls at most of the other soapies to be older and more hardened than at catherines and nataree. i was particularly unimpressed with the models at poseidon. not particularly attractive and not a smile from any of them as i looked them over. i guess they were waiting to be chosen by the high-rolling thais and asians instead of a farang. the were two girls at amsterdam that i would have done when i went there, even at 5000 baht each, had i not just finished at nataree and been spent.

the catherines girls do not speak any english at all and are not really used to farangs (i only saw one other farang the 4 times i went there) but they are young, with the four i had ranging from 19 to 23, and pretty (although those were the only girls i would have done there anyway). the price i was quoted at catherines was baht 2000 for two hours. fortunately, i had written down the prices of catherines and la defense from the bkk tonite or stickman website. i showed the prices to him and asked him when the prices had changed. he then said ok, 1500 baht.

one of the girls i had, #92, had the most beautiful pussy i’ve seen in a long time- perfect lips, bald, great taste. however, she was a bit of a dead fish. only one of the girls i had, the 19 year-old, did the bj, then bath, then sex routine. one girl looked as if she were half-white based on her features but she said that she was all thai. she gave the worst service and ended the session after the first round with almost an hour to go. she obviously got no tip. i didn’t make an issue of it because i was leaving that night to go home and i still had to go to nataree for a last session there.

I did not bother to reply to your post because I couldn't figure out its relevency. Probably because it was such a general question. After thinking about this fact, I recall my feelings about going abroad for the first time and I was also full of timid general questions.

If this is your first time (as it appears) to travel outside your mother country then you'd be wise to warn your audience of this so that the jaded old-timers like myself have reason to take pity on you. Now that I am aware of your newbie status I can give you some advice.

WHERE TO STAY

1) Stay at the Majestic Hotel and Book through their website. After you have booked your ticket print the small map and instructions for the Taxi driver (written in Thai). http://www.majesticsuites.com/location.html The other good reason to stay here is because you can't miss the action, even if you are deaf, blind, and dumb.

2) If you chose to stay elsewhere, I advise you to find similiar instructions that are also written in Thai

3) If you can't find instructions written in Thai then book at a ridiculously expensive hotel that every taxi driver is sure to know.

MONEY

1) Take some cash in case you lose your ATM cards and your credit cards

2) Take two ATM cards from different banks. Keep one in your wallet and the other in your toiletries. Transfer the ATM in your toiletries to the safe in your room upon arrival.

3) Take two credit cards and handle them just as your ATMS

Take Traveler's advice and stay calm. If you lose your cool in Thailand and speak to the Thai people in a hot headed manner (as you spoke to Duni), you will find that it may take days (or even weeks) before someone will help you. Instead, stay cool and smile a lot! Smile until it hurts my friend. Thai people like to help those that know how to smile.

Good advice and good mannerism! There are other mongerers who will tell him to read the F..forms not realizing the newbie is a newbie...could even be a virgin, never experienced the pleasures of LOS or the other Asian countries.

Another piece of advice is to use protection. Many people have told me aids is in the land of LOS but it is also everywhere else. A doctor told me a story of a young man who was taken by his friend to Asia for a week of fun..he returned as a carrrier of the Aids virus. Use protection!

ICT Ministry postpones mandatory SIM-card registration

BANGKOK: -- The ICT Ministry has decided to postpone the deadline for registration of pre-paid SIM cards until further notice. No new deadline is given either to network operators or users. Both call centres have no further information for the time being.

DTAC / DPrompt
Khun Yo, supervisor at DTAC Customer Service, says he believe that no registration is necessary at all. The only post-paid users that would need to register is when the number will be used in the three deep southern provinces. Khun Yo added that concerned DTAC customers could call him directly on *1800.

AIS / One-2-Call
The leading provider's Call Centre, AIS, refused to comment the postponed registration requirements.

While the posts in ISG are very useful, I could use local tour guides who are familiar with the best places for girls, food, entertainment, sight seeing etc...

It's a bit of a hit-and-miss, but in BKK, some of the P4P girls make excellent guides. In fact, I've found some that are better transalots/fixers than the assistants available through local temp service agencies or the business centers of the major hotels. Problem is finding the right girl. It can be an arduous job in itself, but the interview process is kind of fun. If you find the right girl as your guide, she'll take a lot of pride in the assignment and make impeccable arrangements for you. P4P girks are almost always aware of the best restaurants, know the more cultural sights thoroughly and tend to get you the best prices, at least better than you could get on your own without knowing Thai. And "variation" is no problem. You want six girls, all at once or on different nights, she can arrange it.
This suggestion won't work every time and YMMV, but it's definitely worthwhile to consider a TG as your guide outside and inside the pink zone in BKK.
