...............After just watching the Sky News coverage of the one Briton who caught the virus in Singapore and spread it to France and Brighton in the UK, that "Typhoid Mary" has infected at least 11 people since being infected on January 21. So this is a very contagious virus that can be passed on when the infected person does not show any signs of illness, asymptomatic transmission. The cruise ship quarantined in Yokohama, Japan started with only 10 infections 6 days ago and now has 136 infected today. This is not the flu. There is no vaccine. There is no antibodies that can fight a virus that the human body has never encountered. Please do not take this situation lightly.

The numbers of dead have already surpassed SARS in such a short span of time. This is very scary.

You are absolutely right that Rodwint2 gave an opinion. As such, Mr E is entirely in his right to give some contrary facts and an opposing opinion. The hole in Rodwint2's case appears to be his assumption and inference: that there is some kind of Thai cover up of the actual number of new cases reported in LOS.

Maybe there is little recorded new activity in Thailand because there is little new activity to record.

My Opinion:

I am guardedly optimistic and I am still planning on going to LOS unless the Bat Virus gets out of control in Japan & Thailand in which case I am sure my flight will be cancelled. My flight is scheduled for late April. I have no contingency back up plan although I could very easily change my travel plans with a couple of hours notice and hit Sao Paulo, Brazil instead. On the plus side of going to Thailand in the wake of this virus: I expect the plane will be half full, the girls to be at their most welcoming, and I have no problem with being quarantined in BKK or Pattaya should something happen after I arrive.

I respect NB's opinion, but the point I was trying to make was that there seemed to be an under reporting by the Thai government of the actual cases. Whether it is intentional by the government or just plain incompetence on the part of the agencies responsible for the health of the Thai people, my query to my friend was answered in a round about way in by my friend in his response that the Thai government was more concerned about angering China and the money it represents, than with the health of the people they govern. Both my friend and I are retired financial executives and our experience and knowledge in these areas exceeds the normal monger on this forum regarding reading the financial tea leaves in this situation.

And who would stay away at a time like this? The papers are reporting that since Chinese people are not coming, prices have fallen and more focus is on foreingers that are not Chinese. So you recommend waiting until the Chinese return and prices go back up, and the Thais go back to not giving a shit about other foreigners?

"Everyone here knows that the Thai govt only cares about money and not its people. Why else would they not be harder on China? The China tourist trade has dropped considerably and the Thai govt is freaked over the loss of income.

Adding to their greed and stupidity, they are now seriously considering to implement a new tourist tax. Taxing new visitors to make up for the diminished income of the Chinese.

I am encouraging my friends to stay away until the virus fully blows over. The baht is getting hammered at the moment and the trend might continue. So waiting is a good idea. ".

This year it is corona. Next year there will be something else. When do you plan to move into a cave for the rest of your life?

Good one! Yes I plan to be particularly healthy for the rest of my life by cutting myself off from society, living remotely with very low social contact, not quite a cave, but like a hermit. The one problem is this is not quite compatible with mongering. Ha ha. Can I give it up? Probably not. Maybe for a while, or in patches. My big cut back occurred before the Corona virus, by coincidence.

Airlines could advertise a new class of seating where passengers could pay a little more to be sealed inside a capsule with special air filtering. I seem to remember a Sci Fi book about everyone being sealed off from each other and trying to live to a very old age.

I can hardly remember Mers and H1 N1. Yet I read Thailand had 18 deaths from Swine Flu.

It is hard to fully understand the scare level. 1st factor is how many people have it and where they are located. The death rate of 5% has to be important (Sars was more deadly), since huge numbers of people catch a Flu or Corona Virus of some sort each year. 3nd factor is the level of contagiousness (ease to pass on airborne and surfaces). Number of cases reportedly doubling every 5 days. Will it peak soon? Then there is the insidiousness of symptomless persons passing it on with long incubation period. If you are very close to an infected patient for some time period, are you certain catch it?

Other factors:

Chinese government cover up.

I wonder if the name is relevant? If this was called "bat flu" instead of the Corona Virus, would that be much less scary?

I recall the bird flu time as really silly, with hotels insisting to over cook eggs till they were virtually inedible.

Can the spread be halted, or will it go to all countries? If so, the death toll will be huge.

In a very deadly monkey virus movie with Dustin Hoffman starring, I recall the military planning to drop a nuke on the infected area.

We are all meeting girls wearing masks now. Its a bit like a Hijab. I can't see how good looking they are any more. I am imagining a visit to Crazy House with girls dancing fully nude but with face masks on. Might be a little surreal.

With coronavirus in mind, what's the current attitude of girls towards Chinese or Asians? I'm Chinese-American not that any girl would know that. Haven't stepped foot on Mainland China in many years and have no desire to again. Are massage places going to reject me at the door? Will outcall escorts turn away when I open the door?

I was in Bankok this past weekend Thurs-Sun and was also there till mid Jan. When I landed at the airport this time it felt spooky with a lot of staff everywhere with masks and thermal scanners pointed at people. However once you are out and in the city things seemed just normal except for a lot of people now with face masks including all hotel staff. Bars in Nana, Clubs (level, insanity) and gogo bars were humming as usual although less crowded than NYear. I did not venture to Soi see this time nor Thermae due to not finding time. But a previous thermae contact that I sessioned with told me that she and her friends have stopped going to thermae because of the Chinese possibly visiting there.
