I have been trying to get rid of this athlete's foot for years. Yesterday I took a picture of my foot and headed down to the pharmacy. He gave me medicine for 300 baht. So I went outside and waited and they called me over to pay the bill. My buddy had already told me that it runs 1000 baht to see the doctor. I think I had about 3000 baht on me. They called me up and said 4,237 baht! What the fuck. Well I do not have that much cash, but I do have my Kasikorn debit card. The lady said great. You get a 300 baht discount for using that card. Well this is the first time that I have heard you get it cheaper by paying with a card instead of cash. This is Thailand though. So my bill was 3,935 baht. 1,000 baht to see the doctor, 2,715 baht for the medicine, and a 220 baht admin fee.

I got home and remember a buddy was just telling me 2 days before how he got fucked at Pattaya International Hospital a few days ago and now I just got fucked the same way. I thought when I take this psoriasis medicine back to the pharmacy, I will ask how much it is for the other medicines. Turns out at the pharmacy on Second Road the tablets cost 100 baht for 4. At the hospital they gave me 7 packs of 4 so that would have been 700 baht at the pharmacy. 10 g of the creme would have cost 100 baht. The hospital gave me 60 g. So 600 baht at the pharmacy. The soap at the pharmacy was 130 baht.

So buying the same medicines at the pharmacy would have cost me 1,430 baht versus the 3,017 cash price at the private hospital. Next time I am in this situation I will ask the doctor for the prescriptions before I leave the room and tell her that I will get them filled at an outside pharmacy. I would have saved myself almost 1,600 baht in this case. You live and you learn. Just want to pass on the knowledge to the next person.

Years ago I had a case of athletes foot that I had a doctor treat for over a year. I had monthly appointments with the doctor. On my last appointment the doctor said it was gone and cured. He asked me what I had done differently? I said last week I had just gotten back from the Bahamas with a week in the sun and surf. I might be wrong but I think they won't give you directly the prescription, it's part of the "scam".

A few years ago I knew a good pharmacist in Pattaya (up to 2013), he's been very helpful with me. Maybe you could go and see him if he is still there, he is the kind of old "doctor-pharmacist" that try to heal his customers himself before sending them anywhere.

His pharmacy was located on Central road, the last one on the left side when you're going towards Sukhumvit. It's a "Thai-style "pharmacy, old, looks empty and everything written in Thai.

Don't bother trying to see this with his wife if she is the only one at the desk, she is clueless.

For what it's worth, here is my take-away. I think it does eventually boil down to personal preference. I think I am naturally most aligned with Crocodilexp's point of view. I enjoy the act of looking, rubbing elbows, smiling, getting shot down, finding the right mix of beauty and personality. I like hopping from one spot to the next, searching for my next lovely. And I too, like Crocodilexp, enjoy the thought of being able pick up what I like and have myself inside her within 30 minutes. So I think I will remain such a monger, probably forever, and regardless of what happens technologically.

But on the other hand, I can see the allure of the online scene. There is a little of the same thing there: you are going through profiles and getting something like the same experience, albeit on a 6-inch screen. Siamsin, I get all your arguments, and I cannot fault them in the least.

So I think in the end, I am likely to try both routes on my next visit to LOS. I think I will download TF and / or TC and start playing around with them. But I remain set on having this be a side diversion.

reading the posts on ISG (especially the recent ones), it seems like I might be missing something very substantial with the online scene.

You're not missing much. Your caricature is not at all far from reality.

We all differ in our preferences and what we look for, so the online scene may work better for some of us than others. I've seen claims here that it takes less effort than traditional mongering, and even that you can have a girl in your room within half an hour with these apps. The former might be true for those who find the online trawling for avatars and cultivating prospects mildly amusing. The latter is physically impossible (even meeting with an old buddy 4 BTS stops away takes longer from the initial contact), but it sure feels like half an hour to the person who wrote it.

Over the years, I tried all manner of online dating / mongering, from the now defunct ones (Bangkok Chat, ThailandFreinds, Badoo), to current ones like Tinder, ThaiFriendly, WeChat (briefly), and even Thai-only ones like FanFinFin. They all suffer from the major deficiencies you mentioned, especially when it comes to outright mongering.

First, it takes too much effort. Even if it's as simple as outright negotiating the price, place and time, it's still hugely inferior to the traditional scene, where I basically have to say yes or no, the place is where I want, and most importantly of all the time is now, with no uncertainty. Perhaps years as an expat in Thailand have made me jaded, but I'd rather jerk off and save my money than wait 3-4 h for a hooker.

Second, as you said, you're interacting with avatars, and for me, there's zero pleasure in that. Browsing through streetwalkers or bargirls is actually fun for me. Even if not many are attractive, it feels great there are women around who would go with you if you only said yes and accepted to pay. Online, even when I find a cute one, there's no way of knowing what she'll actually be like (for instance, for me smell is a great turnoff quite often, smokers are out), and the feeling is now "cool, now we talk price and I'm banging her within 30 min", but "will she respond quickly (if at all), is she at some far away inconvenient place, will we be able to agree to meet within a reasonable timeframe, once she arrives, will there be any obvious deal breakers" and so on. Firstly, I think you have half the battle won just by being curious about OM options. Most TM's are quite satisfied with their routine and there's nothing wrong with that. Having done a lot of OM and some TM, I think there's absolutely no reason to exclude either. So to give you my opinions, I'll start off by giving you a couple of possible scenarios:

1. You land in Bkk, hit 3 Gogo bars and there's nothing you fancy, or you're having shit luck. 2. You arrive in BKK, dog tired, get to your hotel and pass out. Wake up in the morning, check your phone and you've got messages from your TF contacts on Line keen to meet you. You didn't even have to get out of bed to setup a date.

The above 2 scenarios are very possible if you include OM into your agenda. Now to address some of your concerns I'd like to point out a few things (bear in mind that this is only my opinion):

So with girls, when I pick up girls in LOS, whether in a gogo bar, a soapie, a night club or off the street, I'm not looking for a vagina. They all have vaginas, so that is a given. I think everyone will have different opinions regarding this topic. I have been using one form or another of online apps and in the earlier days, 2000 to 2008 chat rooms to procure sex in Asian countries. It's a relatively new phenomenon this, the act of procuring Thai girls for sex through virtual means. I've never been a fan or a practitioner, but with the recent posts by Siamsin, Eihtooms and others, I'm beginning to wonder. I looked through the pages of the venerable ISG, and I have not found a robust discussion of this facet of mongering in LOS (plenty of very useful reports, but not really a pros-and-cons kinds of discussion), and so I am hoping to get some insights from you all.

I may be wrong, but I think this wave of online activity of finding freelancers has really come into its own in the last 2 years. It was around before, sure, probably since 2010 or so, but it really wasn't a major thing. In the last 2 years, I think a lot of girls have developed a presence on some of the major apps, they all make use of Line, and they make a good side hustle out of it. And so where the gazelles migrate, so go the lions. For example, reports such as this abound here at ISG:

But for me, I have always been hesitant to go that route for two major reasons. I would appreciate any thoughts you have on these reasons, and whether I am being overly cautious. Or am I right in avoiding the online hustle?

To make this work, I need to set up a dichotomy, which is undoubtedly false, but let's do it anyway. Let's just assume, for the sake of this discussion, that there are two kinds of mongers in LOS: the Traditional Monger (TM) and the Online Monger (OM). It should be said that I am imagining this from a visitor's perspective, not an expat's perspective. For the expat, I think being both an OM and a TM makes a whole lot of sense. But it's the traveling monger that I am considering.

The TM is the guy who operates as mongers have since the invention of the pussy and cock: they arrive in LOS, they go to a gogo bar, club, Suk soi 4, soapy, massage parlor, etc. , find a cutie that rings their bell, boinks said cutie, pays up and saunters off in search of noodles and a beer. You know, the regular thing.

The OM, on the other hand, is the guy who starts early (weeks, months before arrival in LOS), cultivating individual avatars on various sites in preparation for arrival in LOS. They are avatars at this point because all you know about them is what they construct online for you to see, so they are not the real thing. They are a virtual representation of something real. Upon arrival, the OM calls in the chips from those avatars one by one, and slowly works down his list of preferred options. When the avatar transforms into a real human being (they meet in real life), the OM has to either follow through with sex+money, or find an elegant way to bail. And if bail is the option, he needs to go down the list of avatars until he finds the right human being. Not to mention individual names here at ISG, but I think we can all identify those that fit into one model or the other. There are, of course, many who do both, and I think this latter group are the ones who can probably respond to this query the best.

So with that typology of mongers established, here are the reasons I hesitate to make the shift from TM to OM (or a mix of the two).

From all I have read about how to make the Thai Friendly or Thai Cupid (or whatever) route work, it seems like you need to put in a lot of work. You need to have a reasonable profile, carefully worded to make clear what you want, and then you have to spend time trolling through dozens of profiles. It sounds like you get lots and lots of hits, and the key to making this plan work is to sift through all the pebbles and find the emeralds hiding within.

Even then, once you find a few of those emeralds, you need to cultivate them. You need to strike up conversations, and get a feel for each one of them, and then make arrangements.

Eihtooms, Siamsin and others have given really nice descriptions of how to do this, and to you all I am indebted.

So the thing about all that is that it sounds like a monumental time commitment. It sounds like a tedious process, fraught with potential pitfalls, and it just seems like an inefficient way to procure what is freely available otherwise. I'm not averse to hard work, quite the contrary. But I am averse to inefficient work, which is what this strikes me as. Can anyone dissuade me of that impression? Am I missing something?

Remember when no one believed Amazon would work? When everyone was skeptical that people would buy anything online other than books? Now, in 2019, I buy all kinds of shit online, but I only buy things that don't need personal assessment: books, hair gel, Go Pro cameras, cereal, etc. I buy clothes and shoes, but only from brands that I know will fit me. Size 9 shoes from one brand is not the same as size 9 shoes from another. And if you want to try something new, you really need to try it on in person. How does one figure out all those other things when interacting with a carefully manicured avatar? How can I tell if the details of her physique will live up to my needs? Perhaps I am being too picky, but that's my concern.

So TM I am, no question about it. But reading the posts on ISG (especially the recent ones), it seems like I might be missing something very substantial with the online scene. Guys, help get this luddite up to speed, please. I have less than two weeks before I hit the dirty streets of Sukhumvit. Should I take the plunge with online mongering options, or should I hold steady to my old ways?
