Posts: 558I have used Grab successfully in Pattaya 3 for 3. The last time the driver texted me requesting that I move 50 meters up a side soi so he would not be spotted. He claims the mafia actually reports him to police and then he has to appear and prove that all is in order. But good for me as the fare is always just 120 or so baht instead of 200.

And of course, communication is abysmal. What doesn't help is that I have scant knowledge of the car makes here in Thailand. They're all Toyota or Nissan something but that doesn't get me very far. What I hate most is when a driver phones me because I'm guaranteed to understand nothing. The other day a driver had been going on unintelligibly on the phone so I thought I might at least try to get the colour of the car right. I had him repeat 3 times the colour and still could not relate his vocalisation to any colour known to man.
The last straw was yesterday when the app failed to translate the written messages.

Breaking News is that Uber in Thailand has been taken over by Taxi Grab. Just a rumour I heard without looking in to it. I never used Uber so no effect on me. I like All Thai taxis.

All this pre-planning activity almost guarantees that something will go pear-shaped somewhere along the line.
I hope you are not so paranoid thinking about what can go wrong that you forget to have a good time and to make it all worth the painful drama.

Best strategy is to call first and prevent phone calls in areas where background noise is revealing.
I was once in a sea shore and officially the sea shouldn't be were I was. So add to move quickly away from the wave noise.
In addition the young daughter of a friend of mine started to call my name from far to join the group.
And my name is not as popular as John.
Seconds of panic. Survived.

My one and only time at the Penthouse for obvious reasons LOL. The video call thing blindsided me as when I am away locally she never wants to video call so maybe a little suspicion involved. She is well versed when she knows I am away for work functions and knows that I can call only at certain times and usually from my room where I can control the time and the environment. I am not worried about any girls finding condoms, Viagra or lube as I don't use any at home and buy them just before I leave the country and leave in the hotel when I book out. My conditioning her with WA calls is working fine and she hasn't asked why all of a sudden I'm using the app! She uses it all time with her friends so probably is unaware of my sudden use.
Thanks again for all the feedback and I will fill in a report when I return or discuss my pending divorce, LOL, if my plan backfires.
Rob.
