Three days in Bangkok at the Nana Hotel.

First, I firmly believe most of the non-sex worker people in Thailand can barely contain their contempt for foreigners, such as myself. No its not me, I always exercise the uttmost in manners, sometimes to the point of being effusive. I was treated particularly bad while shopping.

The Nana Hotel - all in all for the "first timer" this hotel was good. Shabby and run down a bit, but clean. They do some little things well, e.g., do not stock the mini-bar, which I like (once in the PI, after I fell asleep, 2 "ladies" made off with about $30 (US) worth of stuff), good breakfast included with room charge. I paid in the neighbood of 1650b for a Superior Room.

Come evening - hell all day - the scene in the hotel is very entertaining. A constant parade of girls with their clients. You are actually propositioned right in the lobby. Later in the evening the girls line up in the parking lot for the choosing. Ironically, you would think most of them would be scags, but they are not. A lot of good looking women hang in the parking lot. In fact, I wound up choosing the same gal for my three nigth stay. Unheard of for me, since I really like variety. I would go as far as to say they were a lot better looking than many in the beer bars.

Beer Bars (Bar Beer) - A disappointment. On average, I would rate these gals a 5. I cannot bring myself to go higher. The language thing is a big problem also. In a number of cases, I had to use another girl as an interpretor, ruins the atmosphere. I am probably spoiled from my 15 years of going to the PI. All in all, a rather disappointing experience.

Go-Go Bars - The attitude of the management is absolutely terrible. In many cases I would tell them I wanted to walk around and, if I saw something I liked, I would buy her and I a drink, which happened on occasion. The problem is they follow you around with flashlights and are a general nuisance. When you are out for a good time, this is a real downer. The girls are good looking but, again, the problem is language. I like to talk and joke around, but this is very difficult.

So an American laywer in the US can't do all that much other than complete the forms. Very rarely would the American Consular Officer intervene and if they do they had better have a good reason.

Retired Army is right. The Thai employees at the U.S. embassy are expert at recognizing girls with a background in P4P and ex-BGs will never get a tourist visa. If it is a legitimate marriage, she might be able tol get a spouse's visa, but only if she's been out of the game a long time and has a spotlessly clean record. However, even then it's not easy or quick.

A colleague (U.S. citizen from birth) who works in the Bangkok office of the same company I do is married to a Thai woman who was never involved in P4P. She is a university graduate and could document how she'd spent every month of her adult life through university transcripts or employment records from foreign-owned enterprises. It still took nearly three years for her to get a visa. Only a limited number of visas to the U.S. are granted per month and even if the Consulate approves the application, the woman may have to wait months for her turn to get it stamped in her passport.

My colleague's wife's visa was approved after about two years, during which time they had a child. While they were waiting for final issuance of the visa, his great-grandmother, in her 80's, began to fade quickly. He asked the Consulate if they could get priority on grounds of a family emergency - if they got to the U.S. in time, Great Grandma could see her first great grandson before she died. If they were too late, at least they could attend the funeral.

No way. Luckily Great Grandma hung on for another six months and did get to see the baby. My colleague had letters of support not only from the chairman of our company - a major U.S. multi-national - but also from religious and political figures in Great Grandma's home town, including one from her Congressman.

None of that helped. The rules have been written so that procedures can't be trumped. Otherwise, every visa application would be a case of who has the biggest friends.

I doubt very much a U.S. lawyer can do much to help with a tourist vsa for a BG. For a businessman, investor or tourist who has millions of baht in assets in Thailand, the lawyer can make sure all the forms are filled in correctly, all the documentation is in place, etc. But for a BG, it just isn't possible short of a miracle.

I'm sure your friend has helped getThais into the US. However, all the visa decisions are made at the U.S. Embassy's Consular Section in BKK (by Thais I might add), not in the US. So an American laywer in the US can't do all that much other than complete the forms. Very rarely would the American Consular Officer intervene and if they do they had better have a good reason. What a lawyer in the US can probably do is to help get a work visa and that is problematic and expensive. I suspect the writer of the original post isn't going to want to spend that much money or go through that much trouble.

Late at night, any hotel in the Sukhumvit area is about a 20-minute cab ride from the airport. The late-night action centers around the Nana Hotel (Soi 4), but you can find action all along Ssukhumvit betwen Soi 2 and Soi 33. Which hotel you choose depends on how much you want to spend, everything is available from Spartan rooms under 1,000 baht/night to the big international chains. If you stay at the Nana or one of the many other guest friendly hotels in the area, you'll be in good position to get the bus from the Eastern Bus Terminal - also known as Ekamai, located right next to Ekamai BTS station on Sukhumvit. If you're the thrifty type or don't swant to worry about getting stuck in a Suk traffic jam and are traveling light, you can take the BTS to the bus station. Take a taxi if you are carrying a heavy suitcase.
