I had read that there were common scams where someone would rent a jet ski and then when he brought it back there would be all sorts of damage shown and the renter would be intimidated into giving a few thousand baht to cover the damages.

Like I said I did not make the rental but thought about this later. Unless I crash it why should I be responsible for any damage? It is his job to keep it in working order not mine. If something falls off how do I know it is my fault and not something already broken and flimsily reattached before I took it out? And while we are on the subject are there the same issues with a scooter rental?

They showed that scam when the series Big Trouble in Thailand aired. A marine had rented one and the shore patrol guy had to come get him out of trouble. Before he showed up the guy had already offered an amount to the scammer so shore patrol told him to go ahead and give him the money and drop it. I think he had gotten him for about US$300. The scammer had taken out a shot gun and was threatening him.

First, you always want to thoroughly inspect the craft before accepting it. Second, I always rent from the same person to avoid these things. Once my wingman was riding and the left side of the handle bars had completely broken off at a point about 7 inches from the end. As you said why should someone who is renting for half an hour be responsible for normal wear and tear? But I guess that is Thailand. He ended up rigging it to stay attached long enough for us to get out of there and not be blamed for it.

Another time we were riding and my engine would not start. The helper came out and told me to get on with my wingman to go back to shore. When I pulled myself up his flipped over. I got back on and the helper told my wingman to pull himself up on the back. Well he is over 300 pounds and when he tried it the bar he was holding on to broke and we turned over once again. The helper ended up having to tow him back to the shore while he was in the water holding onto a strap on the bottom rear of the jet ski. Joom wanted us to pay 500 baht for the handle but I told her that it was her helper who told him to try to get on that way so we are not paying anything extra. There was no bad blood between us because she knows I will be back again and again and will bring friends.

As far as scooter rentals, I have neither experienced nor heard of any scams. But for that as well I usually use the same people too. You can buy a new one for about US$1500, but I heard that you can get a used one at the auction for about US$300. I'm thinking about exploring that option because right now I pay US$100 / month to rent one.

I am just back from a few days in Pattaya. Let me share a few highlights. I stayed at the Tim Boutique Hotel and was pleased with the price, quality of service and location. I would recommend you ask for a room on the front side of the hotel and take ear plugs, just in case it as noisy as the back side. I arrived late on Friday and had planned to go straight to bed but decided on a quick look around. The hotel is just off Second Road near The Avenue. Step out of the Soi, make a right and you are almost in front of Hotties Beer bar. I did and saw a stunning girl in front of the bar on a stool looking very bored. I went past and returned. I went to Devil's Den yesterday and discovered that my favourite girl had left and was now working in the above soapy. Will be back in Pattaya soon and hoping do things a little different to my last visit. About 5 years ago I visited a place which was just on the way out of Pattaya heading towards Jomtien down a small soi on the left, somewhere near Residence garden I think. It was a day time venue with a number of girls working there, a nice place to relax, I remember a girl from there taking me back to my hotel on the back of her motor bike.
