I know the guy first hand w that he goes out of his way to meet a lot of people on ISG and other forum, maybe its the military thing but he isn't shy nor is he picky about the color of people he meets. I took a long stroll down the Beach Road promenade last night from Soi 8 to Walking Street, and to my amazement I found it wider and much better than it was before the construction. There are no benches yet but plenty of room for them to return once all is finished. Only about 100 meters remain under construction where BR meets Walking Street.

The addition of a new lane for traffic has reduced the baht bus bottlenecks and the widening encroaches quite a lot more on the beach chair vendors turf instead of narrowing the promenade.

I also saw lots of freelancers lining the walkway, some of whom were young and cute, so it hasn't ruined the hooker trade.

All things considered, it seems to me that the project was worth the trouble.

plane tix: from lax (los angeles) to bkk is about $1, 200 round trip. this trip i flew lax-hkg-bkk for 42, 500 british airways miles + $160 taxes / fees. i flew bkk-hkg-lax for 30, 000 american airline miles + $65 (= $40 taxes / fees + $25 telephone booking since the online booking was giving me problems).

- daily breakdown $120 = food $10 (b 300) + my drinks $30 (b 900) + st (s) /lt $50 (b 1, 500) + other $30 (b 900) including laundry / tips / souvenirs / transportation / etc.

total on trip 3 = about $5, 000 = plane tix $225 + shuttle to / from lax $50 (including $5 / ride tip) + taxi to patts $40 (including b 220 tip) + bell shuttle to bkk $8 + hotel $ 622 (including b 20 / morning tip to the housekeeper) + spending money $4, 080.

buying / owning / running a bb: any pattaya business is a high risk undertaking but my buddy wants me to research getting a bb. off the top of my head some selection criteria:

- location: purchase an existing biz on soi 6 (alternate: on ws)

- requires minimal refurbishment / new furnishings: st rooms should have air-con, ensuite shower (not down the hallway) , decent beds.

- start-up costs: to buy the business, rental / lease key money, etc.

- operating expenses cushion: to sustain the biz for 6+ months as we build up our clientele / reputation.

- security system: internet connected to allow remote live viewing, deter theft, etc, eg the sentinel

- big uncertainty 1: paying tea money.

- big uncertainty 2: spiteful competitors (out to sabotage us, complain that we're stealing their ladies / business, etc) & organized crime (is that an issue if we're paying tea money to the right people?)

- minor details: accept credit cards with a 3% surcharge.
