Been here long enough to understand a few reasons why Pattaya has become such a popular location for older women, mothers and well-worn pros. This is the only place that they can get fucked and make a very small amount of money. The message must have been sent to all ugly women in Thailand. Go to Pattaya and make some money from the fat, old and sometimes smelly foreigners that now live in Pattaya, patrol the beach road and who only pay 300 to 500 Baht for a fuck. It's pathetic and totally fucked up Pattaya. These women are the lowest of the low. Thai men don't even fuck them. No wonder it's getting so hard to find decent sexy looking girls in Pattaya. These girls are staying away because they are a few leagues above foreigners living here. Why would they work in Pattaya where they have to deal with these people? The cheap rabbit like condos that have sprung up everywhere don't help. Foreigners buy these 25 square meter hutches and actually live in them. They drink excessive amounts of alcohol every day which helps give them the down and out pathetic appearance. The Thais just about tolerate them but really think they are the lowest of the low. So there you have it. You have the lowest of the low Thai girls fucking the lowest of the low foreigners.

SO different for what the scene was 7 years ago. I quickly came back to Bangkok after the first 2 days instead of the 4 days planned.

Well, I always try to be polite when scanning the place, smiling and greeting everyone in Thai. But how am I supposed to know I am obliged to buy a drink if I go inside, even if the place is horrible? And talking of polite, how polite was the doorman to me?

You are right. The doorman was not polite to you. That is ignorance thought. Unless you can freely communicate in Thai. He is doing the best he can to communicate in English with you. You can not have the same expectations as far as courtseys go from a third world country. They were not raised the same way you were. Money is what drives this country. Your actions are actions that are perceived as disrespectful to this man or this establishment. A 55 baht or even a 90 baht drink is a small price to pay to keep good relations with a establisment that you may frequent again. If you choose not to frequent this establisment again then don't worry about buying the drink. But if you may want to then it's just a good policy or courtesey to buy a reasonably cheap drink even if you don't drink it. I order water or a cheap beer and sometimes don't drink it just to get a good look at the place.

i don't see anything wrong with going into a club and having a quick look around to decide whether you like the ambience, the layout, the number of girls, the noise level, etc etc. probably most of the time you can get that from a peek around the curtain, but a quick look around shouldn't be a problem to the management. why should it?

this is an excellent point; however, the buisness here is not really the alcohol. at a bar the primary purpose of the owner is to sell alcohol to make money, likewise, the purpose of these establishments are to entice gentlemen to barfine the girls, the alcohol helps do that and makes the owners money at the same time. if you choose not to drink at a bar where you are from its because there is no space or not the adequate environement, usually not because they don't have a drink that you want. at these bars you trying to get a taste of the merchandise for free. you are shopping for the girls (which is the primary purpose of these establishments) without contributing to the owner of that establishment (buying one cheap drink that cost you a couple bucks). i have walked in and saw there was no place to sit and walk out just passing the curtain on the establishment. by doing a walk around you are looking at the goods without contributing to the buisness.

by the way, i forgot to say, i did get the 200-baht sign a couple of times six months ago, but then it was late at night som i assumed they were full.

this is funny. typically the door girls are trying to drag you in, not you trying to sneak a peek. just to be safe you could say before walking in to a bar,"is there a cover fee?" or "i will just take a look, ok?" then if anyone tries to pull a "looking fee" on you just say,"no thank you. i don't pay looking fees. if i like the way the girls look i will have a drink and stay." and then walk away. vote with your feet.

This brings me to another question. Thais in general don't read and write the Roman (Falang) alphabet, do they? They don't really have any real use of it, compared to learning English phrases phonetically, which they really have use of.

The great majority do: at least the alphabet and sometimes a few words of English are taught in most schools (though usually poorly). Knowing just these basics and with a pecuniary incentive they typically pick up a lot very quickly in Pattaya. In fact they do have a lot of uses for it, such as exchanging SMS with foreigners, using the internet, etc.

Here's an example of an SMS I just received:

"Hello, tilak (my name misspelled drastically) are you ok? Good sleep ok and hope you want to see me and want to fuck my ass again tonight ok(her name) sexzy ass."

If you have had a bargirl for LT (for which I usually pay them 1 000 baht) and wish to keep your bargirl over the next day, meaning from breakfast till the early evening, how much will the girl generally want for this (apart from you naturally paying for her expenses during the day)?

I've had tonnes of luck getting extra time by saying I want the girl to stay. Offer food etc and say that you will go to the bar and pay tomorrows barfine right away. This happens before the bar is opened so no need for lady drinks etc. Or on other occations I've had girls say that common phrase around the extra tip."Up to you". In that case it's up to you and you may get a little puppy dog sad face if your tip is light but whatever you think is right is the right answer.

Paying the next day bf is the way I go often but your YMMV.

There are four parts to literacy: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I would not say there is an "in general" as far as your question is concerned. I would say it depends on how far the paticular person went in school. Most Thais who speak English learn it as a second language in public school. And the first thing you are taught when you learn a foreign language is the alphabet for that language. Then there are the other Thais who will have learned English informally and on the fly. This includes some taxi drivers, street corner salespeople, and such. They are able to speak minimally, and listen for understanding when you speak slowly and clearly, but maybe not read or write. Anyway, I have noticed that the people who speak basic English and above are able to read and write it, so they do in fact have use for the Roman alphabet.

rubbish. i never enter a club and never buy a drink. from time to time i do see some idiots, scoping out clubs, walking around like they think they know it all and expecting girls to fall at their feet. maybe even seen you. do you get away with it in your own country?

bars change from week to week. girls change. managers change etc. etc. what's good one week can be bad the next week and vice versa. that's the way it is so why shouldn't he keep going back to happy.

Can any experienced mongers comment of the quality of talent in the bars and / or go-gos that are not located in the touristy parts of Pattaya? I found this post about bars in an area past Sukhumvit. Please read the complete post FIRST.

People going on holiday / vacation to Pattaya, Thailand will have no doubt heard of its vibrant colorful nightlife, or to put it another way 'sex industry' and if that's what you are looking for in a holiday / vacation then Pattaya is the place to be, where even the oldest codger can feel young again. Providing he has money in his pockets that is!

Although the main beer bar complex's, 'Entertainment zones' are found between Pattaya's beach road and second road, more and more are opening further a field. Soi Bhukhoa (Bukow) and Soi LK Metro are only a short walk away from Pattaya beach and are becoming more popular with first time visitors and expats a like.

All of Pattaya's beer bar complexes are with in walking distance or can be reached by Baht bus in a matter of minutes. However if you do not fancy doing your 'courting' under the bright lights and load music of Pattaya City or, are just looking for something different then why not venture out to Pattaya's 'Dark Side' A part from money don't forget to take a towel and your swimming trunks! Even if it is 10PM.

Firstly let me dispel the rumors. Pattaya's 'Dark Side' has nothing to do with it being a place where you will have to go to to find 'gay men' or 'ladyboy's' A visit to Pattaya's 'Dark Side' does not mean you are gay or 'experimental' Yes, gay men and ladyboy's can be found in the 'Dark Side' but there again they can be found everywhere in Pattaya. Neither does the 'Dark Side' have any thing to do with 'Star Wars' and Darth Vader, So, I would not suggest taking the children!

Pattaya's 'Dark Side' is simply a common name given to the area east of the Sukhumvit road and the train tracks that lie just beyond it. The 'Dark Side'. A large area of Pattaya that is mainly without street lighting. The area is very popular with expats as you will see by the number of gated / secure housing complexes. Land prices and therefore rents are considerably cheaper in the 'Dark Side' Also, living on the 'Dark Side' means having to drive in to Pattaya. A bit like going out on a Saturday night in your country, it's nice to make the effort every now and then. The 'Dark Side' is relatively a haven of piece and tranquility on the edge of insanity!

Where there is housing, there are people, and where there are people in Pattaya, there are going to be beer bars, and beer bars employ bar girls or hostesses. There are more than fifty beer bars in the area known as the "Dark Side" nearly all of them have 'short time rooms' Where you may take your "new girlfriend" for some horizontal exercise for a small fee. Some of the beer bars even have 'swimming pools' too. Having never been in to one of these establishments? I will have to leave it to your imagination has to what happens in this type of beer bar.

For a really great night out, get together with your friends, hire a Baht bus for the evening and do some exploring in the beer bars of Pattaya's 'Dark Side'

I am also looking for recommended places to visit in Naklua and Jontiem. Or should I not even bother = stick to South Pattaya because it is all the "Same Same"? I will be there during high season, first week of December. Last time I was in Pattaya was 2008.

When I was in Pattaya last time, six months ago, I really enjoyed the Happy gogo bar on Walking Street. So now when I returned to Pattaya I naturally went back there. I took a quick walk around the stage and noticed that all the girls looked plain, so I left straight away without sitting down.

The next night I thought I would give the place a new chance. Maybe the decent looking girls had already been barfined yesterday? However, at the door the doorman held up a sign with some Thai characters and "200 baht", which I interpreted as meaning the place was full so I have to pay entry. Needless to say, I didn't go in.

The third day, I went back and was again met by the 200-baht sign, which I thought was weird since it was quite early in the evening, maybe 9. 30.

After more than a week without going to Walking Street I returned and thought I would give Happy a last chance. This time I was let in without a problem and, as usual, I walked quickly around the stage to see if there were any good looking girls, but unfortunately all of them were very plain looking.

What is your opinion on all this? Are you obliged to buy at least one drink if you enter a gogo, or is it okay to leave after 30 seconds if you don't like what you see on stage?

I think it is the frequency of your visits that pissed him off (he could have been having a bad day or week as well) Remember where you are talking about, they will always try to invent new ways to separate you from your money. When I am on holiday, I try to keep a low profile and would not go back to a place that is so confrontational. There are many other places that deserve your business.

Agreed. For me attitude is twice as important as looks. Quantified it would look something like this:

(looks x 1) + (attitude x 2) /3 = overall rating.

So a 10 looks and 7 attitude lady would rate an 8.

And a 7 looks and 10 attitude lady would rate a 9.

What do you mean by "not true"? I wrote that most people who enter a club tend to sit down more or less where they are told, without first walking around the club's stage and scoping the talent, like you and me.

I have always thought it was okay to walk around the stage quickly and then leave (I have never seen a negative reaction to this before) , but when I think about it, most other punters don't do that. They just go in and sit down and order a drink, regardless of what the girls look like.
