Standard practice in Asia that when demand and trading volume drop, then prices are increased to maintain gross revenue. Offering discounts to attract the diminishing or limited customers is a very Western concept.

I'm wondering how that will play out in practice. Most Chinese are in prepaid packages, staying at Chinese owned hotels, taking Chinese guided tours, eating at Chinese owned restaurants ie some crumbs filter down to the local economy but the vast majority finds its way back into Chinese hands.

Many factors in play that suggest a weak number of tourists this high season.

Agreed, and the worst threat is the fact that you won't see Chinese tourists. Thailand counts on Chinese money more than any group, trying to replace them with Indians will not work well. But I am in a group of travellers heading to Pattaya in December and the number of people on that list is very small compared to the group from 2021. It may be too early to be sure but so far it's about one third of the size of last year and this is the time when many are booking their trip.

Thailand took too long to open its borders giving other countries a head start in capturing tourists.

I doubt that, Thailand has been slow and the CCSA is disbanding at the end of this month. But it has been winding down since the doors were opened last November and I have done two trips so far this year.

Nevertheless I have seen quire some girls in bars using them. True that TIT but seemed a bit too obvious (talking about soi Chayapoon and alikes. We also know prostitution is illegal in Thailand.

The police don't care much if Thai girls vape, it's the tourists that they can grab and fine. And the fines are massive!! So vape in your hotel and nowhere else and don't carry one around. I know that vapes are ubiquitous but it's still illegal so you are a walking cash machine if noticed by the cops.

Many factors in play that suggest a week number of tourists this high season. Thailand took too long to open its borders giving other countries a head start in capturing tourists. The world is headed towards a secere recession, just look at what is going on in Europe. The tourist numbers will be much lower than expected. Given the Thais poaching mentality of tourists it is well deserved.

I think by next low season, ST rates will have dropped and LT will be more otainable. The Thais don't know what is coming with the world economy. And it's just as bad in China, so don't expect loads of Chinese to walk through the door.

The impeding factor is mainly on air fares, and those affect any destination (at comparable distance, of course). General costs in Thailand have not risen. I don't know about resorts (mass tourism) but hotels in Pattaya have not increased prices. Unless it is due to demand (that means tourism would not drop). It depends what the alternative destinations offer to the captured tour. Certainly in our hobby, LOS is second to none, even if we do not represent a big chunk (for the country, but are significant for the local Pattaya insustry).

There's not much a country can do to drop airfares, especially when its own airline is not in the best shape, and as a major cost factor comes from fuel. Subsidising inbound passengers (as many tourist destinations do in Europe with Ryan air)? I doubt it can happen in Thailand.

It is fascinating to watch the Sandal Wearing Indian Guys Huddle around one lady next to a coconut tree. It would seem to me that "how much" would be an easy and direct question. But maybe they all like gang-bangs? I don't know but notice that they are always in groups. And always in Sandals and always questioning the ladies on the beach. Long time since I've visited but after covid and all the uncertainty in the world about travel in the future, I'm coming to Pattaya for another week of fantasy fulfillment. My circle of Thailand travel friends live in USA, Canada, UK, and Europe. I keep in bi-weekly touch with about 15 travelers. Only about half the normal group are planning on going to Thailand this high season. Most say the reason is more expensive airline and hotel prices. In my case, my November/December flights are not too expensive, but my February/April 2023 flights are 50% more than what I paid for better class travel at same time as 2022. I haven't yet booked my hotels, but those prices have also increased a good bit.

Even without the current problems in Russia, Ukraine, and China, high season won't be all that high.

There are so many Indians in Pattaya, that even if only 1 percent barfine at gogos, that's a lot of barfines.

The remaining 99 percent will go to the Coconut bar.

Overall quality of women has gone down a lot and the Indians are the prominent group of mongers now. You can find some hot ones in the Gogos on Walking Street and LK Metro but it is pricey. Soi 6 is still okay and has some younger ones but you have to be patient and choosy there to find the good ones. I went to Insomnia and found it to be filled with mainly MILFS; the days of the better scene at I Bar are gone as it was dead. I really hope the scene gets better, not sure if high season will improve the situation.

I was there at New Years and again in June. Pattaya at the start of the year was in a terrible state with most places closed and bars forced to close early. Most of the girls were absent having returned home so what bars were open would have a poor selection. Roll around June and conditions were better, more bars were open and prices were lower as the few girls around were competing for fewer customers. I understand that conditions are improving and I'm looking forward to a Christmas return.

The bars are having a tough time restarting, they are finding it very hard to recruit girls at this time so they are accepting any girls willing to work but they also have to offer larger salaries and a bigger cut of the lady drinks. That's having an impact where the girls are making enough money on salary and drinks that they don't need to do even ST with customers.

It's particularly noticeable with Nightwish bars, it's rare to see girls go upstairs as they spend all their time earning money from drinks and horn-pulls. If you ask to take a girl upstairs it's pretty common for them to say that they have period or they are a drink only girl. On a Nightwish related site, there has been a growing wave of complaints about this practice, so much so that the price increase to 1500 + 400 is barely being spoken about. Loyal customers over the years are saying that they don't intend to return to Soi 6, so Nightwish is now losing customers to the Soi Pothole / LK Metro / treetown bars and I don't stop there as often as I used to either. I'm not about to boycott Nightwish but I am going to reduce my time in their bars.

There are still plenty of other options and I will make the best of it.
