I know a guy that did that. He's multi-skilled and makes some money working online, which is the best choice as long one keeps quiet about it. The matter has been debated a million of times in forums, but let's go with the most basic facts. There is probably millions of foreigners doing that, so one is inclined to think that it's absolutely doable.

If at least 50, can deposit 800 K THB, or have an income of 65 K monthly, or a combination of the two for a total of 800 K, then you can obtain an one year stay permit and renew it every year indefinitely as long the requirements are met. Even if the law doesn't explicitly prohibits, you will never obtain a permit to work legally, in practice the only job one could find is being an English teacher, which are paid consistently with the national average (that is, subsistence) and often treated poorly. And if you want to be an entrepreneur of some sort, good luck with the fact that you will never legally own, fully understand, control anything. That not even mentioning cultural acceptance, just have a look at Soi Bukhao bars patrons at 11am to see what I mean.

I had one the best times of my life taking for mistress a lady that was a bit of a disco lost soul. I had to travel often to be together in the brand new bungalow I had rented in Phuket.
