I get by with 4000-5000 per day (exclusive of hotel, which I prepay by credit card) and am very comfortable. But I am in my 60's and not the firecracker stud I was 30 years ago. Now most days I just drink and flirt with the girls, maybe hang on the beach or the hotel pool a bit, get a foot massage, whatever.

But one just has to decide what they want to do. A typical newbie, and remember we are talking about newbies, will probably be fine with 6000 a day. But if said newbie thinks they will be drinking a ton and wants to live on Soi 6 during the day and bring home the hottest of the hot from WS for LT each night, then he may want to bring twice this amount. For me, I will bring $2000 per week for mongering and misc expenses (no hotel). That is usually twice what I will spend, but if I decide to hit up DD for a couple of three ways, and hit up Sky Fall or Peppermint a couple of times a week for LT, I will be prepared. Better to bring cash home than run out of cash and have to curtail your activities. So, newbies, add up the prices to fulfill your dream, double it, and you will be fine. For those with limited funds and who don't know if they will ever be able to come back, bring as much as you can and do all you can!

As far a rules go, I think we are going overboard. The "rules" shouldn't tell us what we have to do, IMHO. I think the intention is simply to give some guidance to newbies to help them out.

I travel so much that I automatically convert currency numbers. I now keep up with five currencies, but that's only because of work obligations. If you only travel from your home country to another country then back home, stating it from your bank's currency seems logical.

However, the general rule-of-thumb for currency is, state the currency of the destination unless speaking to a fellow countryman.

The only exception to that rule is speaking with long term ex-pats. In which case, location currency is preferred.

I won't begrudge anybody who states their own country's currency. It's a natural tendency, even though it isn't the best etiquette.

At least you aren't trying to shake hands using your left. Now that's an unforgivable offense!

Agreed. Not only do many of us have different home currencies, exchange rates can vary quite a bit in even in a short period of time. For those reasons it makes sense for punters to state their Thailand spending in baht, and people can work backwards from there.

Actually, nearly all my costs are expressed in USD on my bank statement. I simply added up all the money I spent and divided by the number of days I spent away.

Is 24 only applicable to current environment? Or does that go for every aspect of the trip? If 24 is for every aspect, your numbers contradict each other.

I'd never feel comfortable telling a monger what to do once the door is closed. We are all freaks in this forum. Any sexual advice is likely to start tons of arguments.

24 is a good addition to that list, but I think 23 should be rewritten in a broader sense.

17. Know when to let stuff go. If the sign says "80 baht beer" but they charge me 90, I'll just let it go. 10 baht isn't worth fighting for.

Sometimes the 10% service charge is not included in the signs.

19. You'll see tons of posts in this forum arguing about money or complaining about Pattaya not being as great as it was; take those posts with a grain of salt. Many of them are bitter vets, or jealous haters.

We'll speak again in about 5 to 10 years from now when you're a vet yourself, LOL!

I wrote a post about 106 pages back. I want to re-post it with some additional info for the new bros who won't read back further than five pages and assume they have Pattaya figured out. This list gets updated every six months or so and I strongly recommend reading it for the first-timers.
