Being a first time poster, hope the vets go easy on me on this one.

The follow are some notes that may help any newbies to avoid some traps that I fell into on this trip. After RTFF and having been to LOS many times but never ventured into Pattaya, I decided a trip this time to have a look for myself at what all the talk was about.

Before even landing in LOS I realised that I had booked the Pattaya section starting at the end of Songkran in Pats (Apr 18) so effectively wasted 2 days before starting but decided to carry on as it was my own stupid fault. .

There are those who love Songran. They include Thais but not all Thai people and even some Falang. But just as the planes coming to Thailand for "Water Festival" are full of tourists who are told about this bucket list experience (har-har! The planes leaving are also carrying many of expats who live at least some of the year in LOS. Vietnam or Cambodia were of my usual escape points and I once spent a very happy Songran in Indonesia. Laos and Burma practice water festival too with much water throwing but with less danger, at least that was the way it appeared when I used to live full-time in SE Asia.

There is not a lot you can do about looking Asian. But if you go to the parts of Thailand where there are still some mongering opportunities but less of the industrial vibe, I think you will avoid the issues with 333 and such nonsense. The secret is to get to know the ladies in quieter bars. That is, if bar ladies are what you are after. Even in Pats, you can go to the outlying bars where the music is not so loud and you can get to know the ladies.

An alternative is to go to the oily / massage places in places like Bangkok and other cities. Fixed prices, no nonsense. Personally, for bar ladies and FLs, I would go to the more quiet places. Hua Hin, for instance, or Ko Chang where the vibe is more easygoing and you can get to know the ladies first. And the ladies are less jaded and industrial in their outlook.

It was a toss up between Areca and Flipper Lodge when I booked the hotels but decided on Flipper because it was slightly cheaper but made sure I was in the new section of the hotel. The staff at the front desk were friendly and got through the check-in process in quickly so time for a hopefully a scout around the area wrong. Was dripping wet within 10 m of leaving the front steps and this was to continue until Mon "Mai Pen Lai" you have to experience Songkran at least once in your life. Managed to find a place for dinner then back to one of the bars in Soi 8 for some beers.

The next day was wet again only worse because it was a full on water battle. Managed to get walk down to Walking St in the evening (Beach Rd closed to traffic) and have a look around there. It's been twelve years since my last visit. Although I made annual pilgrimages to Thailand every year since I lived in Bangkok, for some reason I never visited Pattaya.

These places have no stake in freelancer's business. They do have a valid concern in non drink buying customers. It is for that reason I have been told in the past that they are kept out.
