The ratio of male visitors to Bangkok is over 2:1. That pretty much sums it up right there. And keep in mind, lots of swinger type couples go to Thailand. Lost of lesbian women go, to play with the girls too.

Sums what up? That most business travelers are male? I bet you don't even know many female business women traveling to Asia regularly and remember, Bangkok is a strong hub for Asian business and traveling business women are nonexistent from Viet Nam, Cambodia, Indonesia and other neighboring third world economies. Even those business men who go for legitimate business reasons will most often dabble in some nightlife fun on the side.

Sit back and visualize Bangkok itself with the lack of free sex, no shows, no gogo bars, no massage parlors, no free lancers, no places to go and just grab a girl and really ask yourself, would you still go to Bangkok just to go?

I think the point of this discussion was not so much the size of the industry but its durability. I think most of us agree Thailand's sex industry is not going to diminish, let alone disappear.

I think the real question we all want to know, is will there come a day when this industry is gone from Thailand?

Yeah, I know, it's the world's oldest profession and can be found in any country. However, there is no place like Thailand. The openness, the variety, a BJ, bar, various massage types, Thermea coffee house, Eden club, nana, and so on. It all leads to the appeal of a one of a kind experience. I don't know what percent of the Thai economy is attributable to tourism. I've always read and heard 6-7%. I think it is very difficult to calculate how much of that is sex tourism. Their incentive is to exaggerate. Whatever it is, I think it's considerably less than half. But I'm not going to argue the point. I'm no expert and I don't care.

Except for concentrated sex areas, Sukhumvit, Pattaya (increasingly being overtaken by non-sex tourists) and small parts of Phuket, sex tourism is a minor contributor to the Thai economy.

Count the tourists away from Soi Nana on Sukhumvit and count the mongers on Soi Nana. 20. 1 genuine tourists.

Started the morning by going for a walk on the Beach Road heading for someplace to get lunch with a sea view. My subsequent plan was to get a cheap massage with the works. We all know there is a significant sex industry in Bangkok and especially Pattaya, and elsewhere in Thailand. There are cities where you can find it, but don't even notice it if you're not looking carefully. In Bangkok it's apparent in a few locations; in most part of Bangkok it doesn't seem to exist, but still can be found in some of these other neighborhoods. It is conspicuous seemingly everywhere in Pattaya.

I've traveled to Thailand on business for a couple of decades. On almost every trip I've sampled a little or a lot of the sex industry. During the same time period I traveled to many other cities in other parts of the world and sampled the local sex industry. The sex industry is everywhere; has been forever; and always will be. In Pattaya's case it was a tiny fishing village that got turned into a big bordello by the US military in the mid 1960's. Got a few buddies who can tell stories about trips to Pattaya on leave in 1968. Can't imagine Pattaya without the sex industry.

Six percent is a typical figure, and that is total tourism of which sex tourism is a very small percentage. Look at how many tourists are in Bangkok during the high season. There is a reason the Thai government looks the other way and the reason is money. If the sex trade was completely done away with in all of Thailand, I'm guessing you would see at least a 20% drop in tourism overnight and it would dwindle from there.
