What's wrong with tipping 20 baht? If I get an hour massage for 100 baht and tip 20 baht that is 20%. And if I get one of those happy hour beers for 55 baht then 20 baht tip is 36%.

Why guys worry about others overpaying is beyond me. If guys here are an indication of what goes on out there, guys are just not paying.

The guys that do overpay are such a minority, that it's a statistical non-event. LOL.

* You find these "poor beggars" only in areas frequented by tourists.

* Only tourists give them money.

Used to be that tips were just that. A reward for service above and beyond the call. Then some genius figured out that too many scofflaw waitresses were getting away with unclaimed income. So, now waitstaff are taxed on their gross sales. The kind and benevolent IRS assumes they'll be tipped something like 8% of their gross sales during a day and they levy income tax accordingly. If one doesn't tip the waiter actually loses money on the deal, which is grossly unfair to them unless they really suck at their job.

Yet another item in the long litany of why the founding fathers made the income tax unconstitutional.

In Thailand and other places the money paid to the lady is a "tip." In Mexico it's a "donation." Both are just euphemisms for their fee, as the payment is not optional. A genuine tip, aka gratuity, would be over and above the amount agreed upon.

No offense but I would be ashamed to recommend someone to tip 20 baht. Talk about the utmost disrespect. Is the lady going to wipe her bowel movement with that 20 baht.

If you'd get out of mom's basement and actually travel around the country you might learn something.

In that particular case I was with a friend in Chiang Mai. It was a local massage shop frequented by locals. I followed her lead. Paid for the massage and a bit extra.

Slight change of subject. Over 19 million people visited Thailand in 2011, 684k of them were from the USA. That's only 3. 5% of the tourists.

It'd be a bit strange to hand a masseuse B20, but it's an absolutely standard tip at restaurants and bars, and usually about right for taxis too.

The point you're making across, is that for you, your own habits and believings take precedence to adapting to local customs. And that is a form of cultural imperialism.

If you read carefully what I said you would not have this hang-up about 'cultural imperialism. ' I tip what I want, over and under, based on my experience of the local customs and culture.

I do not import the US habit of tipping 15-20% nor the Australian custom of not tipping.

What I tip and you tip does not matter a damn. Because nearly 100 percent of punters have never heard of ISG and will tip what they think right.

Even ISG members are not consistent; I tip on the high side for excellent / above average service (be it restaurants or WGs) and on the low side if the service does not meet my expectations.

The only tip I give working girls is the purple one my jizz blasts out of. I give deductions. Waiters I give about 10 baht per 130 I spend and the subway technicians get 6 of my baht because I live there and not trying to eat a bacon, lettuce, tomato, and pubic hair sandwiches. Taxi drivers I give a higher percentage.
