In all honesty, Pattaya isn't any better or any WORSE than most other places with similar populations. it IS, of course, essentially wall-to-wall available "poo-ying" - with a more "affordable" price structure than grungthep

Walking Street,

Might be because during the day, the street is available to vehicles and traffic of all kinds from Beach Road. Then at night it is blocked off and only available for walking foot traffic. There you might have it! WALKING STREET!

I'm deciding whether to stay in Bangkok or Pattaya during my next Thailand visit. Based on all the news reports within the link, Pattaya sounds like a dangerous place and I should probably go to Bangkok instead. Would you all agree?

I don't believe everything I read as somethings are blown out of proportion

ie Grenades guns and fists used in a fight but no report on fatalities seems to me that's BS.

Some ways to stay safe or at least prevent the chances of trouble

1. Don't ride motorbikes esp when drunk

2. Don't flash big cash only bring out enough for the night.

3. Don't flash gold or expensive watches

4. Keep to weel lit areas (standard safety precation in any city)

5. Don't walk beachside of Beach Rd late at night.

6. Don't go looking for trouble, or you will find it.

7. Don't get shitfaced falling down drunk you are making a target of yourself.

8. If you decide to ignore No'7 do it within staggering distance of your hotel.

9.Keep cool be nice and pull your head in.

10. If there is any confrontation turn and walk away.

11. use your hotels safety deposit.

I'm sure others would have more ideas but I think you get the picture, so I'll get off my soapbox now.

Just be aware of your surroundings and any situations that may develope near or around you.

Oh yes I nearly forgot don't get involved if it's none of tou business keep out of it.

Out of curiosity, Why walking street is called walking street..its obvious, that people walk on the walking street..which gives away any secrets it holds .

Is there anything else on the walking street or people just walk around here and there..

Was there any Discovery like newfoundland or new england or a British expat just walked onto pattaya and said wow..this steet is nice..lets name it walking street or its named after his demise and the bar girls named it after him as the greatest monger of all time.....Mr James Walking

Great hotel list! I would like to add Charlie Place, corner of Soi Dianna and Soi Bakaw 900b. Beg to differ but a friend of mine stayed at Opey De Place this Dec/Jan 900b.

Definitely stay on Soi 8. Only cost 10 B to catch ride down to Walking Street. There are a couple of good hotels right on Soi 8. I usually stay at Sunshine 1200-1600B but cheaper 850B at 2 hotels that run down street in front of Sunshine between Soi 7 and Soi 8. My mind is blank right now and do not have cards with me but one is a British place (Pig and Whistle?) and other is something like AFN. Can not miss if you just take road from front of Sunshine on Soi 8 to Soi 7. If you really need I can look up for you and send.
Soi 7 and 8 are right next to each other. There are several go go bars there. The one next to Beach road on Soi 7 has a jacuzzi show. Run by a younger mammasan from Bangkok that is real funny and lot of fun. Girl cost ST 1000 B plus bar fine 600B. The biggest problem with go go bars the bar fine is usually always 600B plus cost of girl plus drinks and if LT then add food cost. Then problem getting them to leave in morning. Always have an exit plan ie. "I need to leave for tour so leave." If not they want to keep you on string making money. Remember you are the ATM machine so you run the show. Also if you are wanting anything in particular agree in advance. Do not get to room and then get turned down for anything but straight sex.
Personally I think Walking Street is turning kind of boring and lots of ladyboys.
If you want something quick and easy hit Lollita's for a qucik BBBJ for 700B. They are located on street behind Mike's mall. For price kind of takes the urgency off you.
And for whatever it is worth part - always kiss the girl before you bar fine. I have found if there is no real response or passion it will be the same in the room.
Try to change your thinking from how you think back home. A lot of these girls are lucky to get a ST or LT 4-6 times in one month. The less effort you put into it the better you will do and less it will cost. Not like back home where you have to wine, dine, and beg to get anything.

I really should have included this info in my first response. In the day time Walking Street smells like a sewer. Have been through a number of times in day and just plain disgusting. Most of fun bars closed until later. Cheap food further apart. Better to just visit it at night and get away during the day. At night kind of fun due to all of the lighting. Kind of reminds me of Bourbon St in New Orleans (or what it use to be like before Katrina) in the sense that fun to go to at night to hear music and be part of crowds. Day time lot better off in Soi 8 area. No matter where you stay figure on catching a few rides per day.

... If you call for a traffic ticket from the police, after they have stopped your car or bike, you pay 500 Baht. Without ticket it is 200 Baht...

Unless the BIB charge more in Pattaya than Bangkok i think you're being overcharged for your ticket ! It's 300 baht for a ticket in Bangkok, you must surrender your driving license, or a photocopy is fine if you have one, they will issue you a ticket, which you can pay at the post office within a certain timeframe, the driving license you despoited is then posted back to your home address after they see the payment has been made. I find it huighly amusing when police stop and tell you it's 500 baht to be on your way, i go for the 300 baht ticket everytime, in most cases the BIB can't be bothered and just give up on anything !

my information is that smoking (cigarettes, cigars and pipe) isn’t allowed from now in all bars and restaurants. separate rooms for smokers are not allowed. there is a short transitional period until the end of april. from 1st of may you have to pay round about 2000 baht, if they snap you. the owner of the bar has to pay about 20.000 baht. if they control.
i hope, the system works like the traffic control. if you call for a traffic ticket from the police, after they have stopped your car or bike, you pay 500 baht. without ticket it is 200 baht.
so better go to [CodeWord901]’s or pump station and let smoke. you have a better consideration for your money.

Can anyone in Pattaya report on the smoking ban that came into affect on 11th Feb. i have heard that some bars are enforcing it now and other are waiting until the law is to be enforced with fines on june 1st.

I'm looking forward to going back and not having to move around the bar every time someone sparks up!

It works well in the civilized world, I see no reason why it cant work in Thailand!

Yes all bars are closed due to National Elections, until midnight sunday march 2nd.

They're closed because no alcohol can be served.

But personally, I find this is great because the girls are waiting everywhere for you, including the bars, where they just sit around in the dark waiting for farangs to show up with offers!

It's great. You pay nothing on drinks and just cut to the chase!

The next night I went back to Nana and hit a few different bars, not being too enthused about anything I was seeing. I decided to go back to RB4 and see if anything else there caught my eye. Well, she was dancing right on stage just inside the door, spotted me the second I stepped inside and made eye contact. She immediately came down off the stage and over to me, wedged herself between my legs and put my arms around her. (she took MY arms and placed them around her, I mean) She was being about as warm as I've seen any girl behave in that bar. After a few minutes tonight's offer came: I go to your hotel. "OH, I thought you can not?" Well, she can. I ask if she can go LT? "No, ST." "Oh, well, hm, I don't know." Then we start negotiating time, she says until 12 (it's 10pm now), and I'm not too interested in that. Then she says ok until 2am for 3000. At this point a mini-mamasan comes over and inserts herself into the negotiation -- She says 5am is LT, she can go until 5am. A bit weird that this one has taken over like this, but I go along with it and the deal is made at 3000 until 5am.

So, we go back to the hotel. We get in bed and as we proceed, she seems to be rushed and I say "I like slow." to which she says she doesn't like slow. Grrr. Anyway, this time I take more control and keep the pace at my own. Eventually we get to the main deal and finish up. At that point she got under the covers and turned on tv, while I relaxed next to her and then dozed off. Awhile later, maybe 45 minutes? she says ok she wants to go now. "You sleep, I go." It's about 12. Now I'm sleepy and not exactly desiring another go this second, so I say OK but you go now only 2000. She says 3000. I tell her that was if she stayed until 5 o'clock. She then said "no, not 5 o'clock, five HOURS" -- Uh, well, its now just 2 hrs later. So knowing that her ST fee is 2000, I just say OK I pay you 2500, ok? She frowned (!!!!) and agreed. She made some remark about how now she would have to go back and work in the bar again to make enough to pay her tuition fee tomorrow (between the lines: that's my fault). I said, "oh, ok" in a nice way, still friendly in tone. She seemed slightly displeased but still polite-friendly. And then she left. I'm sure she ended up getting her next customer and 'made her tuition'. The compromise felt like the only one that was going to be peaceable on both sides. Any less and she would have been pissed off, any more and I would have been.

Now the problem with a girl like this one is that if it's 10pm and you want LT, she knows she can finish you in less than 2 hrs at 2000baht ST (or in my case, 4 minutes), and then get another customer after you for 2000ST again, or even for 3000-4000 for LT. So it's absolutely not in her economic interest to do LT at 10pm. Of course she has to be pretty sure she can get the next customer if she goes back, and I'd say for this one that would be a pretty safe bet. She looked much more like a Japanese girl than a Thai. So in my situation, after we'd done it the first time, now she was looking at having to stick around my hotel for 4-6 more hours for just 1000 baht more, missing out on lots more money to be made back at her bar. Not going to happen. And I can't really blame her. If that mini-mam hadn't jumped in (forcing a deal on us that was more favorable to me than the girl wanted to give), I might have been able to work out a good deal with her -- for less than LT but longer than ST, which may have worked. Then again, it may have been inevitable that she would have pulled that move after the first go.

I would have told her here's your short time rate, now if you want to go go to the go-go, go and thanks for the saved money. Although all the factors you have mentioned about this girl add up to her being a ladyboy. Tall and thin works in rainbow 4, aggressive, gives bad service and won't take no for answer. No offence meant but I'm sure others will agree that rainbow is 50% ladyboy sometimes.

Yesterday my actual LT girl told me that all bars are closed. I didn't checkt at walking street or soi 2/6/7/8 but around Royal Garden Plaza the most bars were closed, or at least no music played and no alcohol were sold.
Today it should be the same. Can someone cofirm that?
Well for sex, it doesn't matter for me, since I have that girl from Bangkok. She worked usually in Hong Kong, met her in Tunnel disco in Bangkok. Also, other mongers will not starve too much, I guess. Since at the beach road were still alot of girls.
But, it's a bit boring not to go out to bars and discos and just stay at restaurants and inside the Hotel.

A few times I found myself in go go bars that had a waitress or 2 who were hotter than the girls onstage. One was Hollywood Carousel on the top floor of Nana -- there's one tall thin one there who's the hottest girl in the place by a safe distance. What's the deal with those? I mean, I'd think if she was available, she'd be up on stage. It seems like if you work as a waitress, a lot of guys will presume you're not available, so you'd get fewer offers.

In another club at Soi Cowboy called Spice Girls there was another one who caught my eye - and in that club the waitresses wore numbers just like the girls onstage, which kind of gave me the idea they would be availalble.
