Returning to Pattaya after a 4 yr absence and staying in the middle of Soi Bukhao.

4 years ago the treetown area was an empty field with one VW microbus parked serving cocktails.

The transformation is nothing short of a miracle!

Hey Gents,

Me and 2 close friends are planning a stag trip for Nov this year. It'll be our first time in Thailand. We're thinking of doing 5 days in Pattaya and 4 Days in Bangkok. The main objective is drinks, ladies, A bit of honest sight seeing with some are&are in between. Wondering if this is a good time split for the cities or if I should adjust our time in one of the locations. Thoughts?

I agree. I remember sitting outside Alcatraz about ten years ago (the bar on Walking Street, not the prison) and being shocked when two Indian customers got turned away by security who pointed at a sign on the door that said 'No Indians'. My friend told me it was because Indian customers had a reputation for not buying drinks and the girls would complain they'd go with Indian customers and their friends would be waiting in the room expecting a freebie. I can also remember being in Sabai Dee and, no joke, a minibus-load of about ten Indian guys arrived and one of them tried to negotiate a hefty group discount with the papasan. He didn't get very far.

But India has the fastest growing economy in the world and there are a lot of very rich Indian people.

The big downer for me is bars insisting on music at ear bursting levels. Impossible to talk to provider or negotiate easily!

I measured the volume in several bars at 105 dB with the live bands even louder.

Memo to bar owners. More noise does not make your bar more attractive.

I certainly would not recommend doing your first time (don't know if you are getting the Open Water certification or just doing a discovery dive) in Pattaya unless they will be taking you out to Sattahip to teach you. The last time I got in the water at Pattaya Beach was 11 years ago getting my nitrox certification. You could not see your own hand in front of your face. We went down and came right back up. 12 years ago I got my Advanced in Pattaya and I think we did everything in Sattahip for those 2 or 3 days.

I'll be arriving in Pattaya in a couple weeks and staying for a few weeks. I have stayed at Flipper Lodge previously and it was just fine, but I'm open for recommendations.

I would change and look for a place on Soi Buakhao. That Flipper Lodge area ain't what it used to be. I had a buddy that stayed at Sunshine a few weeks back. He figured the area would be the same as before. Nope. It is pretty much deserted.
