Chinese New Year is my annual trip home 2021 it will be on Feb 12th, in that two week period my main purpose is to spend time with my mother is currently is 102, even before the virus whenever I get an email or phone call from home I think the time has come? I speak to her each week and although she is physically good her mental state seems to be getting worse each time I talk to her?

This gives me a lot of sleepless nights because if something happens I'm locked here in Thailand unable to see or bury her? I'm willing to deal with the ticket cancelation or even lose the money entirely it isn't the big issue with me.

Isn't there an exception for entering or returning to Thailand for medical procedure appointments? If anyone already in Thailand with a legitimate current visa, especially an annual retirement visa, absolutely must leave Thailand, I would probably immediately set up an appointment for the near future to get some minor liposuction done, or a few hair transplants, maybe dental work, whatever, and try to bank on that as my excuse to return. Could be worth a try if you have no other choice but to leave.

Not that you must already be in Thailand when setting up that future appointment for the exception. It seems anyone who makes a medical appointment in Thailand from anywhere can try that exception. Just that I assume someone who has a longer term Thai visa could renew it that way upon re-entry rather than entering on an ordinary tourist visa.

An expat friend of mine who owns a condo in Bangkok and lives here most of the year but got caught outside the borders and stuck in his home country during the lockdown is looking into that loophole right now.

I've got a trip booked late August to mid September. Sadly, I fear it will get cancelled. Not out any cash. Used miles. But god I need a holiday in Pattaya.

Personally, my heart tells you Yes! Because it would show a sign that things have opened up but from everything being said it is right now the middle of July. Unless you have some real power like being a diplomat even then there is a whole list of items required by home prior to even getting to the airport. I've read just 2-3 full stories from people overseas who needed to get back into Thailand and it took close to a month before they satisfied that list!

I took a chance to book a ticket for Feb of next year Chinese New Year and the way things are going outside of Thailand particularly the USA It feels like 50/50 but there might be some hope. Company in Oxford in joint venture with USA? Supposedly got pass the first phase for the vaccine with two major results now final testing of 30,000 groups if successful indication Dec?

Having had my April flight cancelled in March and just now my mid August Flight cancelled and refunded by United, I am in no mood to buy another ticket even though I spotted some real good deals for March 2021. Good deals as in very low price, very short trans pacific duration, and fully refundable if the flight is cancelled by the airline. But no thanks. I am done betting against the virus. I am going to wait until the various vaccines arrive.

But there is good news on the vaccine front, as LBM points out, the Oxford University Group is making real progress. Here is a snip from today's WSJ:

The age of nice sweet girls on the game who clean up easily (so much you'd hardly suspect their former profession) were gone 5-10 years ago.

In the post-crisis period, Thailand won't exactly be teeming with regular employment opportunities for blatantly obvious bargirls with zero useful skills and the work habits of getting 2 k baht for 30 min of laying on their back. Some might go upcountry due to no customers, but I bet most will be back in Pattaya once the tourists are back. Unfortunately, the scene went down the drain long before Covid, and won't be any better afterwards.

I would like to do it too. But right now, 90 % of Thai people don't want foreign people in Thailand! Same for the kingdom. I think Thailand will stay closed till the end of the year.

This is probably what they will try to do. But there should not be a lot of work even in Thailand given the economic situation and in general they have little diploma. Maybe low-paid waitress and jobs in the agricultural sector (so work but hard).

But I think that as soon as the borders open (which they may know before us) and foreigners can enter again, they will come back quickly to the bars.

Thai media Manager went to Pattaya and found desperate unemployed people squatting in the city's closed pubs and bars.

Ten were in one bar area in Soi Bua Khao in central Pattaya. The once thriving red light area is now a shadow of its former self with no tourists to speak of.

Both men and women are sleeping in the bars by night then by day they seek handouts of food and try to get odd jobs so they can survive.
