In one case in particular a family friend had no video at Na Jomtien station police demanded 200,000, although the other party admitted fault. The police, the insurance agent for my friend and so so-called victim were all in it together. In the end, we got up and walked out the door and said if you want us back we be coming with our lawyers, pressing charges. It comes down to their bluff vs. Yours! As noted, these are usually Civil matters not criminal.

Motorbikes are more complicated you drive one you better know the Thai driving law and their habits and being able to speak and explain yourself in Thai will help greatly. Whatever you do never get angry or hostile towards anyone doing so is it going to get your vehicle or bike fit NO! 99.9% of Thais motorbikes don't carry 3rd party insurance majority will play dumb and the poor can't pay so walking away means you suck it up the majority of times. Your car insurance will cover it knowing what I just said they aren't chasing anyone and expect your rate to go up next year.

I've been in a few motorbike fender benders last twenty years never my fault, and never a discussion about insurance I know they don't have it never demand they pay it is the price you pay for driving one considers it like " no-fault " years ago a motorbike taxi in front of Big see, 2nd Road cut in front of me and fell. I stopped and helped him and the passenger get off the floor once they realized I was a farang driver and taxi buddies on the corner said I needed to pay. Your assessment is very accurate as to Thailand after COVID-19, without beating a dead horse I have my opinion as to why it is the way it is today. The younger better-looking ones in my stable are mostly gone if not all. I'm not crying at my stage in life I smile and move on if they call they call. If fact if they do they are doing me a favor! Pricing and availability is also a function of the season. The same ladies who are busy in January are desperate in June.

If your driving a car in Thailand, The Philippines, Malaysia etc and your a foreigner know one thing. No matter who was at fault if its a foreigner vs a local the foreigner will always be at fault. Have the cash on hand to pay off the other people and the first cop who shows up. They won't be asking you for your auto insurance card. You'll be expected to pay for all damages and for all of the lost wages of anyone who's hurt even if its your fault or not. Local sees a foreigner driving a car and there's always that chance that they'll try to get into an accident for a payday. Oh you can argue but the person with the most money is expected to pay. But this also works in your favor if you do something like driving drunk, just bribe the first cop you see and off you go in most cases.
