Probably because favela dwellers raise poultry there to feed themselves: don't forget most of them are migrants from the poor countryside and they always try to reproduce in their new habitat previous living conditions.

And why is it called Cantagalo? Well, that's the name of the favela right next to it...

Bubba,
Not "contagalo" but "CANTAGALO" meaning literally: Sing, rooster!

Just would like to state that if you have a general question about Rio, can you post it in the appropriate section and not PM me. While I appreciate the thanks I receive, I don't have the time to answer Private Messages as a tour guide service, I am tending to get more PM's than I would like of late.
This message of course does not apply to any Senior Members that have a decent amount of posts, IE 100+. Those that have taken the time to help others are always welcome.

Posts: 2Hi, Bubba (Hi, all readers)
Before. English is not my mother tongue. I may not be clear enough. So do not hesitate to ask for more details or explanations
First of all. I have read your guide before going to Rio, and it is really a VERY GOOD guide. Many thanks for your advices, tips and address!
Then, what could be added.
A) mobile telephone: I came with 2 mobiles, one with home line I kept this one in my hotel room.
And an old one to be used in Rio street, I bought a TIM chip (You need to have your passport with you) for 19 are$ and credit can be bought anywhere in the street, subway etc. With this phone, cariocas can call you and also home or office! And in case of emergency you have a phone you can use to call or send sms.
B) phone home: I bought a low cost card I could use in any public phone to call home.
C) At your arrival at the airport: don't change money in "banco do brazil" office near luggage belt (euro-are$ rate was 2. 63 + 4%).
When you find yourself in the arrival lobby (after customs control) ask luggages porters (dressed in a grey blue suits) currency exchange.
The guy who explained me this go directly to them and ask for the rate. Because my brazilian is so so, I ask for any usual name (I. E. Andrei) and they will understand you are looking for are$. Then ask the rate and they will lead you to the seats to do the business (euro rate was 2. 60). Change enough for taxi and first day.
Next day I went in centro and I changed for 270.
D) Where to change euro to are$: in centro (near urugaiana or carioca) you have travel agencies or in the shopping center in lago de marchado
E) Taxi from airport to Copacabana, I asked to the porter (see point see) show me a good taxi not a "bandido", he laughed and introduced me to a cab. Cab meter was on, it was in the early morning high traffic it cost me 50r$ (to be considered as a good price).
F) Taxi from Copacabana to airport, it was 8 pm I asked to a taxi a "fixed price". First one asked 35r$ (luggages included) but second one asked for 25 are$.
G) From airport to Copacabana, I have been informed. But did not test. About a bus called "Réal" that goes everywhere for 6 are$, the driver put your luggages in and out the bus. Frequency is 3 per hours both ways.
Hope this will help.
Again many thanks and BRAVO for your guide
Baby Lonia

I have actually been working on a map, or maps for our favourite spots. Your post has reminded me to get it finished. Hopefully by some time next week.
