I had a similar experience at Riosul last month. Buying the sim card is no problem though. I bought a TIM sim card at the stationary shop located near the north-western exit. The real problem is having it activated. Don't expect any help from the staff at any of the mobile operator shops. You have to call a (free) number but you get a labyrinth of menus and everything is pre-recorded in Portuguese. Fortunately, the people of my Airbnb helped me with it. Your name, nationality and passport number are required for the registration. After this, I went back to the TIM shop on the second floor to buy enough credit for Internet usage for 3 weeks. I don't remember how much I paid. Other guys wasted less time in other locations, though. You can find several posts on this subject in the Rio thread if you go just a few weeks back.

I never said that a minimum wage job is equal to prostitution or should be equally paid. My point is that costs of living in each city / country and minimum wages should be taken into account when comparing p4 p rates in different countries. Don't you think that if city A in one country and city be in another country have exact same costs of living and minimum wages, they should have similar p4 p rates?

Yes and no. I think there are many other factors at play other than the ones you mentioned above. Access and ease to P4 P, local laws surrounding P4 P, and even local attitudes would make a difference in pricing. This is even before factoring local pricing vs tourist pricing. I just don't think looking at minimum wage and cost of living translates to P4 P pricing.

Today I went to Claro in Rio Sul shopping mall and they wouldn't sell a sim card. They told me that the manager doesn't want to do it anymore. TIM on the second floor asked for approx. 300 R for 12 gb. Declined. Did anyone else encountered this issue? Any solutions?

1) how does one compare the minimum wage of a worker in Brazil or anywhere for that matter to be equal to the work done by an escort? Is it the same kind of work? What qualifies as minimum wage work in Brazil?

2) let's look at the expense side of things does a minimum wage worker need to get her hair done, her nails done, buy nice dresses, pay for gym membership and try to eat healthy (which by the way is pretty damn expensive) to work at her job?

3) does a minimum wage worker have to answer calls all day from creeps, weirdos and perverts and then meet said creeps at some hotel where she has no idea what kind of animal will open the door? I have seen some nasty motherfuckers in clubs and bars and I really felt sorry for the girl that this person chose to take home. Smelly, fat as fuck, crappy hygiene. You know the type. I am not saying we are all like that but they do exist. I can see how some may say that the girl might chose this profession so she knows what she is getting into and that is why she sets her price.

I have seen many lower wage workers in my work travels around Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Hong Kong, Dubai and India and I have never ever given them a second glance. I have seen some true knockouts at Scandello, at 4 x4, in Mexico, in the bars in Dubai and in Wan Chai and my mouth stayed open. Now I am sure those women have much higher maintenance expense than the lower wage workers. So why shouldn't they charge more?

I am not saying whether paying a certain price is a good deal or not. I believe that is up to the person who is negotiating. I am just asking. Why are we comparing minimum wages to a profession that has certain expenses and dangers associated with it for the person participating in that profession? How is it equal?

$300/1 HR in Medellin? She can ask whatever she wants, and some sucker might pay it, but no matter how hot she is, I bet she won't get that rate consistently. Thank god, every city or venue has going rates in place, if costs of living and minimum / average wages were completely ignored and every monger paid whatever he was quoted, then we would not have them.

When making comparisons a lot goes into it. But, you absolutely must look at the types of labor being performed and what it takes to do a good job. Too many people think that just because it's sex work that it's legitimate to equate that work with a minimum wage job. I strongly disagree, and you point out several good reasons why that's not always the most appropriate comparison. Another thing to consider is that sex work is of an extremely intimate and personal nature and, depending on what services the sex worker offers, can be quite demanding and draining upon the provider's person, both physically and mentally. That's all worth something when it comes to placing a value on services rendered. And like you, I'm not talking about whether a certain price is a good deal or not. No, what I am saying is that in determining what is or isn't a good price, just remember that all sex work isn't just like doing some lowly, minimum wage job.

It's not as simple as that, and even within the whole world of "tutes" if you will, there are different levels of tutes with some of them and the services they deliver (and how that delivery occurs) being closer to minimum wage work or even less (street stank hoor), while others deliver services in a way that is more professional in nature (sophisticated call girl). Now, I'm not one of these guys who subscribes to the mantra that when it comes to women that all the "product" is the same, and only worth but so much. Rather, some women are Buicks, some are BMWs, and some are Bentleys. And they should, and you must expect, that they will charge accordingly. So, circulate in the market (s) that work for you and your wealth level, and how you want to spend your money. Just remember that not all women, and that includes the tutes, are worth the same (minimum wage). And whether you believe that or not? Remember that they do, and will act accordingly.

That argument doesn't make sense. Some people make more than others in all levels of a capitalist system. Doesn't matter if they are sports heroes, engineers or great artists. It's a matter of supply and demand. If a girl can make x amount of money more than a standard wage based on her looks or negotiating skills she has every right to do that. Guys who buy for her rate aren't being suckered, they are agreeing based on needs and wants.

Hey guys planning my first trip to rio. I'm a veteran of Medellin and was wondering if there's a spot to buy drugs like weed / tussi that's safe-ish like barrio Antioquia in Medellin.

If you walk up and down Copacabana or Ipanema and see guys selling bongs or other paraphernalia or you see a sign saying Bob Marley someone will approach you and try and sell you some low quality products. On the other hand the girls have much higher quality products, they would be your best bet.
