I speak porto after a fashion.

It is just the days on end, like 4 days a week with a 20 or 21 year old where she wants to listen to only brazilian music or watch a brazilian novella series all fkn day long that I have to put the headset on and rock some springsteen or listen to english youtube.

1300 days and still have a language barrier? I've been to Brazil 6 times and only for 2 weeks at a time on average and I can speak with the local brazilians pretty well. I use duolingo and pimselur to improve my porto. When they use slang I have a bit of a trouble but that's the same for any language. I already know spanish so that helped but still I learned a lot more and easier just walking around in SP and RJ for a few days than most of my learning apps.

Just met this SP girl in miami for her birthday that I met in my March trip and she was talking about the gringo guy she was with.

I asked her why she didn't consider me a gringo and she said because I spoke decent porto and didn't flaunt money like a buffet restaurant throwing food away in front of a homeless person.

I'm not a white guy so that helps but even black americans guys are called gringos in Brazil. I remember reading how a forum member was pissed to be called a gringo but if you use american dollars, have a english last name and speak only english, YOU MIGHT BE A GRINGO (Jeff Foxworthy voice).

Learning porto is a must and it's really not that difficult. You really only need to master a few thousand words to have a conversation with locals.

I couldn't imagine living in a country for more than a year and not having a good grasp of at least the basics and conversational level of speaking and writing.

Worth spending 5 $ a month to a get the premium version of duolingo or whatever language learning app you want. Keeps the brain moving and stimulated.

Yes, even as someone who lives here in Rio full time and has for going on 1300 straight days.

The main issue is language barrier.

I have a friend here but he has a wife and kid and she seems pretty controlling and doesn't really want him coming out much with me.

We did a lot of the tourist attractions together, went to Buzios for a few days which was cool, but now I seem to be pretty much on my own. Trying to get a Brazilian girlfriend but its hard, they seem real flaky. Not speaking Portuguese doesn't help much.

I welcome any insight.

If you are looking for a girlfriend in Brazil, you must either be a hansum young man, or be prepared to spend a lot of money. Especially if you don't speak Portuguese.

Have you thought about enrolling in a Portuguese class? There should be some available by week so can take a class for a week when you want to. You will get to know some people too. My personal experience is that it's easier to know people in cities or places with fewer foreigners.

But they can check you on the way out, and again, the posted limit for declaration on the way out is 10 K Reais. In fact, it was a sign on outbound Customs where I first noticed it was reais, not USD.

The amount of currency that has to be declared is 10 K Reais, not 10 K USD or equivalent. That confuses a lot of people because it's USD in the rest of Latin America.
