I'm going to be 59 yo in a couple months. I've been going to the Dominican Republic recently to monger and haven't had any problem I am gray haired and over weight, but I do dress well and personable. I don't flash my cash nor do I present myself as a wealthy guy. I am thinking of taking the long flight from Chicago to Brazil solo. Before doing so, I need to have some kind of inner assurance I will be safe, ( I am an experienced traverler in hot spots), and I will be able to score without a jacked up price and without much difficulty only due to my age.

When I took my first trip to Brazil I was 55. I am now in my mid-60s and have been to Rio a total of 12 times, and I plan to keep coming back until I am drooling in my oatmeal in a nursing home. You should not be concerned about safety as long as you use common sense, just as I hope you would in any large city. Be conscious of your surroundings at all times; don't walk down dark streets alone at night; don't walk on the beach at night; don't get too drunk; never accept a drink from anyone else; don't show money in public; don't wear expensive jewelry or show expensive cameras in public. If you would normally carry your gear in a tote bag, don't; this will make you a target for a snatch and grab. Use a plastic bag from a supermarket instead. Better yet, wear cargo pants with a lot of pockets and put your camera and stuff in there. Use a money belt instead of a wallet. Carry a small amount of money in your pocket, say R50, to satisfy robbers in the unlikely event that you are robbed at gun or knife point. Not essential, but it's probably best to take taxis everywhere at night in Copa. None of these precautions is foolproof, but it should make the probability of your having a safe trip extremely high.

Regarding jacked up prices, your age should have absolutely nothing to do with that. GDPs think all gringos are rich, and they will try to play you for a sucker accordingly. RTFF and see what the going rates are, then don't pay more than that. If you can't reach an accommodation with a GDP, walk away. Never, ever pay in advance. If you bring a GDP back to your apartment or hotel, don't pay her until she is ready to leave. If she insists on being paid first, show her the door. If you frequent the termas you will never have to worry about this, because the prices are fixed.

So stop hesitating and book your trip. You'll have a great time.
