Another option is Santa Teresa up the hill. I always enjoy spending a few hours there when in Rio. The views are to die for, and restaurants are cheap. A bit farther away, though.

There are some good airbnbs up in santa teresa with spectacular views although my only concern would be if Ubers would go there or have a hard time getting one to come. I know there are some good airbnbs in Vidigal down by the beach but the problem is alot of uber will cancel the trip once they notice it is near vidigal which makes it a nightmare to stay in.

I like staying near copa or ipa because it is walkable and fun to just go to random cafe / restaurant and get some fresh air in the beach. Easy to get around and live the simple life.

A cheap and free PREP to reduce your risk is to just wash yourself with soap. Just having a circumcision alone will reduce your risk. Nothing will reduce your risk 100% but soap reduce risk by alot. PREP are mean for people who mistakenly inject themselves with HIV. The safety people said it do happen sometime. When I was work with HIV we has PreP on site for such an event.

Is centro dead on Saturday too or just on Sunday?

I have not seen Rio (nor Brazil). Perhaps someone who experienced both Medellin Centro and Rio Centro could give his thoughts on how does it compare.

In Med Centro, Saturday is a big shopping day, busiest and loudest day of the week, sometimes difficult to walk though the crowds without bumping shoulders. Biggest choice of SWs too for this reason, plenty of bars and clubs open until late in the area as well, since it's the party day.

Sunday is the hangover and family day, Centro mostly being a ghost town compared to Saturday, most shops closed, skeleton lineup in clubs and much lower numbers of SWs, most casas closed, not many people walking around. Although it picks up a bit on the afternoon and some tourists are visiting Plaza Botero. The shopping malls seem be where lots of locals go on Sundays, not even for a big shopping just to walk around or for a meal with family in a foodcourt, others travel out of the city.

What do Rio locals generally do on Saturday and Sunday?

I haven't been to Medellin, but the main difference I think, is Rio Centro is where people work, not live. Some shops and restaurants will be open (a girl once took me to a fantastic Centro restaurant on Saturday, but I don't remember the name). That said, unless there is a festa or some kind of event, weekends are pretty much a waste of time in Centro. But there are often some events, for example, there is Winter Carnival on July 16-17, just one week from now.

Agreed, Rio is beautiful when you see it from up high. There is a Salina near the Aqueduct that should not cost more than US $20. I know there are places that cost R$30 a night here but these places are not online. There are enough food choices and many street food lining up at night in front of Aquaduct. The downside probably is the neighborhood is old and everything is a little rundown and not the most comfortable.

I always prefer the slowest form of transportation when I am alone so I see many different local things that a person moved by Uber won't see. I do it the same way even when my company is paying for everything. My company has a travel app and I can only reserve hotels from the app, most are better hotels for better security. One time I chose to buy camping gear to sleep in the office overlooking US embassy compound.
