Good question. In my opinion and many other's opinions, Lima is currently the culinary hot spot of Southern America. You will find many more high-end restaurants in SP. Perhaps you will also find better Italian food in Sao Paulo. However, Lima's restaurants are offering amazing experiences with local seafood and ingredients. There's also Japanese and Chinese influences in Lima's culinary tradition.

I'm planning on moving around June to Rio. My plan is to go on a student visa for a couple years so I can become fluent in Portuguese and then switch over to an investor visa. From my research it seems hard for an Expat to rent that's not an Airbnb, which is way too expensive for what you get long-term. Are there any websites to find private rentals or are there agencies that work with ex-pats? I'm hoping that if I am willing to put a bigger deposit down or pay the entire rental Upfront they will rent to me as a foreigner. Any advice that someone can give me on this obstacle would be really greatly appreciated!

But IMHO, one should avoid showing ID for many reasons.

1. the girls will try to scam you. Once she has your real name, it's much easier to try to extort you in any number of ways.

I never thought about it much, but my "don't stand out / blend in as much as possible" policy leads me to follow the points you suggest. Bummer? ID nonsense? I don't see the problem here. If you have actually entered Brazil, that means you have a passport, right? You have a problem showing your ID? What country do you live in where you never have to show your ID for routine things like picking up your prescription, voting or getting on an airplane? You had to show one to get on the plane to Brazil and you had to show it again when you arrived, didn't you.

I arrived in Brazil at the end of June and arrived here in Bogota a week ago. In all the time I was in Brazil I had to routinely show my passport to enter commercial buildings, to get on a intercity bus, and of course to board a plane. On both domestic and foreign flights. I've also had to send a photo of my passport to Spanish language schools in Buenos Aires and here in Bogota. And most relevant to Brazil, I've had to present some ID to the porteiro at apartment buildings where GPS work out of, as well as hotels they work out of. In the case of the latter, the desk clerks have made a photocopy of my ID, and taken an actual photo of me before letting me ascend. That also happened in an upscale apartment building in Sao Paulo, where the female porteiro had the demeanor of a Stasi agent at Checkpoint Charlie. This is standard routine. But it didn't stop me from having a good time.

And you know why they need your ID? I shouldn't have to explain this to you, but its for security. It's to discourage you from assaulting or murdering the girls, who are frequently targeted for violence. As my favorite girl in Rio told me, "This is very dangerous work. I never work alone. " Despite the security at the entrance to her building, she shares a 3-room suite with two other girls and will not allow clients to enter unless another girl is there in the suite. Agree 100%. If you like big cities, you'll like SP. Of course Rio is more spectacular -- it's one of the most spectacular cities in the World. But SP has about anything you could want besides a beach. It has the best restaurants in South America hands down. And I especially agree with Ibirapuera Park. Every day in SP, I try to walk a bit in the park. And obviously the women, no better place anywhere.
