I have a feeling that after the elections, the rate will plummet, that's why I want to exchange now before my December trip. None of my friends go to Brazil anymore so its not like I can hand them the money and have them bring the reais back to me. There has to be a way I can get reais without being fucked over on the rate!

I'm not an expert, but my experience is that USA Banks screw you over on currency transactions especially second world / third world currencies. I would look for a Brazilian bank with a branch in the USA Banco do Brasil is in New York and Miami. My guess is that they might only help net worth accounts and not people off the street. You could ask people at the nearest Brazilian consulate.

Major fund management companies have foreign currency money market accounts. I'm not sure I have seen them for Brazil.

Take a look in the Real vs dollar thread, some articles about the subject are predicting 4. 5 to 5 and then crash. I wouldn't know where to get a good rate in the USA, I checked BOA and they give a bad rate too but at 5 it might not be so bad if you get it at the top.

I don't think any bank in the USA Is going to give you a good rate on buying Reais relative to what you will find in Brazil.

Forgive my spelling, I am using my cell phone to type this up. What is the best way to get reais while in America? I was floorrd when I saw that the rate was 4. 10 on Friday! I took my ass to the bank this morning to order some reais and they gave me a rate of 3. 80, I wanted to curse them out. I am sure the rate won't stay over 4 teais for much longer. What is the best way to get a few thousand dollars before the rate crashes back into the 3. 70's?

Are you thinking of the retired Rio Roiss Hotel? It wasn't fancy, but it was decent enough and they were guest friendly. If you booked a double, they wouldn't charge a guest fee. I had some great memories there.

The place where I stayed during my very first visit to Rio! Also many great memories, some of them funny like yours. Time marches on I guess as Rio and Brazil changes.

Goodness how time changes things. Every time when I think or hear of something in Rio my mind instantly takes me back to my 2 trips there in 2000,18 years ago. Forget the name but both times stayed in a hotel a block and a half away from HELP which was a blast every night.

One one visit I wife'd up with a great young lady I had met at HELP. Those few weeks spent with her will be with me till the day I die. A very special time and place in my life.

I had some great memories there. The corner double rooms on the higher floors had a view of the ocean. I remember banging my ATF there on the corner table as the sun came up and a guy cleaning a rooftop across the street watched us.

I was leaving Rio on Sunday. Spent my last afternoon on the beach in front of Meia Pataca. There was that mulatto girl lying on a lounger. She did look like a programa girl, but there was a black guy in the lounger next to her. When he left I approached her and asked to take my picture. She smiled and I asked where her namorado had gone. She laughed and said he was amigo, not namorado, so I told her I was leaving soon and wondered if she wanted to join me in my apartment across the street. Just came back from Rio. Stayed in an oceanfront Airbnb on Atlantica and Lemos for about $50 a day. Screw hotels.......

It's not really a balcony, it's less than a yard wide. It's not as you can sit on it having a beer looking out over the ocean.

Help was a long time ago. Nowadays, from what I've seen, most escorts work Mon-Fri, or with reduced hours on Saturdays. Same for cheap massage places, and Centro is dead on Sunday too. I mean, if you're in for 4-5 days, I'd try to make it Mon-Fri. Or leave the weekend for some touristy stuff. I love Rio and can always find something to do, or just enjoy the beach.

That said, why are the weekends so bad? I figured it would be jumping. Or maybe I can see Sunday being a slow day. I haven't gone back in a while but the way the are is, it's foolish to not go back. The going rate when I used to go to Help was 140 todo la noch or atleast a couple hours.

Do the basic rooms in Pestana have a balcony facing the beach? Considering I pay 60 bucks a night for a basic apartment, 85 is a great price for a nice hotel that is girl friendly.

The cheaper the room the more in the back the room is with less of a view. Although some of the basic rooms can have a side view with a very small balcony where you can see the ocean. Prices fluctuate depending on demand and I have read recently because of the new visa demand for Brazil is high now for tourism. Prices fluctuate for airfares too of course, few weeks back I saw a direct flight from NY to Rio for $880 which is a great price, today it's back up to $1200 and at the beginning of the year same flights were about $1800. So it's all about timing and if you see the price you want grab it.
