Rio is safe until it isn't. Besides shootings and stray bullets, some people here forget about street crime and robberies. Such a disservice for them (not you) to call the city safe. Manhattan is safe. Stockholm is safe. Much time can be spent in Rio without any problems, but one person's experience doesn't make it safe.

Manhattan (the most affluent borough of NYC) really isn't a fair comparison to the city of Rio.

There is now a pretty visible presence of military forces on Avenida Atlantica. In my opinion it is probably safer than ever.

Most shootouts occurs in the communidades, but far from all. As there are many communidades in Zona Sul it's not rare to hear machinegunfire or even grenades even if you stay in Copacabana.

Copacabana is very safe compared to many places in Rio de Janeiro.

It is better to take a taxi after 10 pm and avoid empty streets, that's why the cars don't stop in the lights at night when the streets are empty.

Favelas in Zona Sul are not as dangerous as favelas in Zona Norte and Zona Oeste. Many gringos and tourists live in Favelas in Zona Sul, because the rent is cheaper and can't rent apartments and studios in the city because it is more expensive. There are hotels in Favelas in Zona Sul. Favelas in Zona Sul are pacific.

Favelas in Zona Oeste are led by bandidos or milicianos. Copacabana is very safe just be careful of thieves at night along the beach and any paths, many of them ride bicycles and stay away from streetwalkers. There are many pickpockets along the beach at nigh that's why you have to take a taxi or uber when you get back home. The beaches are safe at night only when there are many people.

As Bubba said, you must be careful wherever you are, that means even in your own country because shit happens everywhere.

This is true. I hear gunfire almost daily-we tell ourselves it's the firecrackers again. Also police checks are way up. I've been stopped in a normal taxi the last 2 nights-firstly on rua SA Ferreira by pavãozinho entrance and last night on outskirts of vm. They searched my rucksack first night and last night I was made to get out the car but both episodes ended with no problem. Not cool though as they like a little cafezinha-bribe at times. Can go left.

Shooting is only in the favelas and disadvantageous spots. You will be fine in Brazil as long as you don't seek trouble and stay away from trouble. Rio de Janeiro is not Baghdad.

Contrary to popular belief Iraq is actually not that dangerous coming in around 50th place out of 200 or so countries that exist in the world today. Brazil has just slipped out of the top 10 coming in around 15th place last year. Statistically speaking it was actually safer in Irag during the US led wars in Irag than in the Brasil.

What Komo said is correct in that most serious crimes occur in the poor areas which do slant the statistics but it is still dangerous anywhere Zona Sul, especially after say 10 pm at night. It is a weird violence in that most nights are really really safe until the split second when it isn't and all manner of shit can happen. You definitely need to be aware of where you are.

Anyone there right now in Copa. I have a lot of "touristy" familiarity with copa area. Walk to MC from best western hotel. Or uber to solarium. That was my typical routine the last 4-5 times I have been there.

This time I am going with 2 other friends. It is their first time.

On Sundays I take some of the girls from Solarium to Hotel Panda. Never been to Paris or Prola Negra.

The first question for me is. Is it now safe. Are there violence and shooting and military in Copa now? If so, we are thinking of cancelling the entire trip.

The other option recommended by a friend is Barra. Hence the prior post.

Next: if we took a 3 bed nice apartment either in Copa or Barra, can we bring 3-5 girls with us? We are planning to get 3-4 bedrooms apartments. Will this be a problem with airbnb. Last time we stayed at best western and we 2 guys and 4 girls went to Panda hotel (double expense of bestwester and panda), the cost of alcohol was very expensive. So we are thinking if we can buy the booze in a liquor store and have girls to our apartment. But not sure of the doorman and the rules of an airbnb.

Copa is not a problem. I'm here now. Same issues as always but no increase in shooting etc.

There are rooms in Paris Cafe, you are able to get laid on the premises.

Copacabana is safe and very easy to travel to different brothels.

It depends on owners' policy but in airbnb you have to ask every owner if their apartment is girl friendly.

4 by4 is good from 5 PM.

Some members on here make a fuss about the safety of Copacabana to discourage some newbies from going there and fuck their mongering experience up. Even in Barra, there are some dangerous spots especially if you walk along the empty beach at night. Be careful of some streetwalkers and thieves in Barra. Everywhere is not safe when you walk into the wrong places. Barra is big and many spots are not safe. Always leave your valuables in your apartment and take the minimum amount just to pay for what you need. Even in Japan, the safest country in the world, since there have been some immigrants from other Asian, South American and African countries, there are people getting scammed especially western men and women. Unfortunately our compatriots are the dumbest to be screwed.

My advice is not to venture to favelas and disadvantaged places, not to take empty paths and not to carry your valuables around.

I prefer the beach in Barra over that of Copacabana because it is cleaner and there are less people compared to that of Copacabana.

Usually the policies for guests and entertaining (e. G. Parties) are explicitly stated in the Airbnb rules for each rental property ad. If you have any doubt, be transparent and ask the host. I always ask the following: Can I have guests? Can I have a party, if no can I have a couple people over? They will probably be concerned about noise during "quiet hours" or deviant behavior that would upset neighbors. And yes the doorman will always give you funny looks when multiple girls are coming and going. You want them to screen and call you first before anyone goes upstairs. That is their job.

There are different girls every week. But it depends on the terma. You just have to go to every terma. A 10 day stay is too short to see a difference. Have you ever tried some clubs in Barra the tijuka?

No I have never been to Barra in my 5 trips. It is always MC and Solarium. Tried once to 4 x 4. Wasn't thrilled. May be the timing was bad.
