I think by contrast in Rio that there is a lot of petty cell phone theft (have a wrist or neck leash for your phone). And I think that there is alot of drama around security. But I think in Barra and Zona Sul, there is a relative safety bubble. So, is the juice worth the squeeze?

If you're in Atlanta or San Antonio or San Diego or Oakland and you try to go get a prostitute, the risk is you end up in jail, right? And you get a skank and you pay $200 dollars or $1000 for a porn star, for covered BJ and sex. You could go to Tijuana, but that is getting really dangerous. OK, so what that means in practice is live in Barra, or if in Zona Sul, live in Botafogo or Leblon, close to the metro. Thankfully, all the carnival bullshit is over in less than a month and then there will be 9 months of more favorable economics for the long term gringo resident of Rio.

Now, that said, I have been having this conversation. I talk to some friends who live in Rio full time, who take all the language classes, who have solid professional qualifications and military backgrounds, but who are getting gringoéthe by the locals. For example, just this past Friday a cat tells me that he is out with a local girl, buys her dinner at Guacamole, ubers her to some friend's event, and comes home at 5 AM, and she doesn't want to fuck. I'm like Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? That's 500 reais in dinner and transporte, and she doesn't want to fuck. And this is a smart guy I respect. But he, and I concur, thinks it is better in cities other than Rio, like, especially Porto Allegre. It's for this reason that I also think Recreio is better, but we shall see. I don't want to make the mistake of talking up Recreio, only to see a bunch of idiot gringos ruin the place. I don't have all the answers, but I have some data and I try to report what I see.

A couple of days ago the authorities said there were 48 foreigners killed in Medellin last year alone.

It seems that those that deal with gringos are all very short sighted business wise. I took this picture at the MDE airport a few months ago. They roped these luggage carts to prevent people taking it without paying. I asked to see what was going on. The man told me it costed 3 USD, or it could be 1 USD. I don't remember. Well, no one is paying 3 USD to use the cart that day, that is for sure. Let's put this in context and compare it to GRU or EZE that are much bigger and far better airport that offer the carts for FREE.

I reported one restaurant in Medellin thread that gave me a choice of how much tip to pay, the max amount is 18%. I doubt they did it to locals. They lost my business forever considering that I went with friends to that same restaurant several times.

Some restaurants asked very high price for some dishes that is more than what we will pay in Michelin star restaurants in BA or SP.

Even the local bakery in El Poblado that I went to frequently now offers Americano and espresso. I was surprised so I ordered Americano. But it was the same coffee in the paper cup that I had before. LOL.

Most of the girls that I have dealt with are similarly short sighted. One is a terrific fuck but she lied constantly. LOL. The best place to live in Rio and Brazil, IMHO, is near Perola Negra, Ave de Pepe 400. But I believe that it is possible to find a awesome apartment for much less in Recreio, and then to use the money saved for ubers to Perola Negra. The bus on Ave Das Americas is the luxury bus that goes straight to centro, rua san jose 35. This is the area where the jiu jitsu king of Brazil and the musical prince of Brazil live. It is all local, and one must have good language and cultural skills to make it, or even to get good service in the prive and the terma.

But it is worth it to learn those skills IMHO.

I suggest that any Rio monger who is in Rio for a week or more should spend a day in Recreio, and make Recreio Terapias a checkpoint, along with Paris, and for food eat at Na Brasa Columbia or Casuarina. These are on Av Glauco Gil, on the 315 bus line from Central, or easy to walk from Av das Americas where the luxury bus goes. The luxury bus station in Centro is Rua San Jose 35.

Medellin's best days for mongering are definitely behind it and while many of us will still go for favoritas, it is no longer the first choice for me.

I am fairly confident that Rio will move up the ranks, but do acknowledge that the long flight, need for a visa (in April now? And higher cost overall (flight, lodging, chicas) will put off many.

Add to that the language. I've always preferred Brasil over Colombia, but the long flight and the language make Colombia such a comparatively easy option. Now add in the need for a visa.

Applied for visa on Dec 25th for my trip in February. Received approval Jan 18. For all docs and photos, I used the adobe scan app on iPhone, airdropped the photos to my iMac and then uploaded on website. I used one of the passport photos I had taken in June for another trip. No issues whatsoever.
