Just a warning to anybody visiting any of the casas in Av. Rio Branco 185 (next to Carioca metro) who arrives with the intention of changing cash (£, $, euros) in the cambio on the basement floor of the commercial area in the building before heading up the elevators for some carnal pleasure. I visited them to change cash knowing what the current exchange rate was and was offered a rate lower than the actual exchange rate - I know this is standard practice in cambios in the West and at airports round the world but I have always got the actual rate or above for changing cash for R$ in Rio (in Centro and Copa). So I have come to expect to get the actual rate or slightly more for largish cash transactions (R$500-1000) in Rio.

I said no and we started a slow haggling process, whereby every time I said no to the rate offered, he had to disappear downstairs to talk to the big boss and come up with a new rate which was a centavos or so higher. After a couple of minutes of this crap I walked off.

In the past I have used a cambio in Centro on the same side of Rio Branco as RB185 but further down the road on the way to 4x4/T502 where I got a good rate (above the actual rate). However, they want to see your passport before exchange and I don't like to carry it around with me in Rio. I ended up changing money in a Cambio in Copa on the way home where I got the actual official rate and got a good look at the cleavage of a pretty girl in very tight/low cut top.
