Has always been, is presently dangerous, and most likely will continue to be. However, you should go, and play it safe. For example, take taxi's, go to Termas, don't go to Centro at night, and make friends with Brazilians that can steer you in the right directions (Networking). I agree, still go. I am back home now and would leave again tomorrow and go straight back. I never got drunk there and always had my wits about me. Door to door taxis are cheap and safe. I had a fantastic time but the crime figures speak for themselves. Bearing in mind how bad corruption is in the country, I suspect the crime figures could actually be a lot higher than are released. There are a lot of homeless people sleeping rough on the beach. That is one place I didn't go near during my stay at night. Its a big dark space with no help so don't go near it. I stayed on the other side of the road on Atlantic av where there were street lights etc. A tourist guy obviously had a problem one night on the beach as we suddenly saw him sprinting across the road bare footed, shirt ripped wide open and I swear his eyes were jutting out of his face with sheer fear. God knows what had just happened but he was running like an Olympic athlete!

I totally discourage you from that scene in Centro, and as for Copa, beware that half of them have a hammer under their skirt. I have seen some stunning SW in Barra De Tijuca, but I have not pulled the trigger with so many other safer and better choices in Rio.

If you have enough dough to travel to brazil, no need to take high risk of getting mugged, drugged or higher chance of catching an STD. Again, just not worth it with so many other options.

Streetwalkers. Copacabana, Prado Junior-Constante Ramos. Some nice ones, but check close up what's your bringing back to avoid unpleasant surprise.
Another advice for SW. Quinta da Boa vista. I've never tried them, but late afternoon I've seen som cute ones. Better go to privées.

Honestly steer clear of sw in Rio. There are so many privees, CLínicas, trash boates, tier 1,2 and 3 termas and VM is the closest area that kinda have sw mixed with girls who are attached to houses but in Centro it's behind Central station but that's crack head HQ. Avenida Atlântica have SW in Copa but I prefer if the girl has some attachment to somewhere where someone knows her etc even Mabs is a bit better than just off the street IMHO.

Don't cancel your trip. No need. 26 trips in 5 years and no problems of note and I go everywhere you shouldn't!! You can go to all the tourist stuff, all the beaches in daytime, use uber and hit all the termas, Lapa etc and restaurants and enjoy Rio. You don't have any reason to go into the communities that have conflict so should be ok. It's a big city so take normal precautions and take behavioural advice from my and others' post.

How long are you in Rio for? I am there June 7 - 21 and could use some advice as well.

I walked the entire stretch of Copacabana beach and Ipanema practically every day for exercise for the last 3 months. Only saw one street offence. Be careful in the day of people walking too close behind you on Atlantica Avenue. A street rat tried to steal the purse from a guy and two Brazilian women. A lot of screaming and shouting and fists flying and the thief legged it. That was broad daylight. Learn 20 good phrases or words in Portuguese and that helps. We really do look vulnerable and out of place so quickly study what the locals do and copy it all. Re taxis, the guys hanging outside Dolce Vita will always overcharge you. Download the uber app and use it. Its at least 50% cheaper than the yellow cabs and there's no hassle. I used it 50 times without any problems.

Favelas and Funke parties. If you go to these then I think you are risking your life. I was with a favela girl for a month and went to the beach with her brother etc..

A 2 bedroom apto. Not as nice as apto 1102, but still a nice monger apto but way more basic (actually I helped out knocking down some walls, renovating, painting and putting new floors, electricity etc in that apto

I don't remember the bed, but the owner of that apartment only buys the most expensive furnitures. Propably Ortoboms most exclusive bed.

Yeah that's a nice Monger Pad, the one I rented in that building is not as new but because it has that outdoor terrace I like it a lot, that's where I break the ice with the girls, take them out on the terrace, have a nice drink of whisky then she goes down for the BJ (Covered or bare) and I stand there and take it all in, it's as close to heaven as I'm going to get. The fact that you have to open the door late at night and let them in or leave is a pain as there is no portiero at night. Because I like to have escorts delivered I usually wait for them in the lobby with a nice fresh glass of whisky and get to see them before I let them in. Sometimes I just wait outside in front of the building, letting them out is a pain late at night especially when you're tired and even once I kicked a girl out and I have no idea how she got out of the building but I never saw her again. So the next time you are in that building if you see a guy sitting in the lobby drinking whisky at midnight then that would be me.

I know few years back ET and I at different times of course used to stay in same apto on rua Magalhaes, the one owned by that British guy. It's kind of creepy when you think about it. And of course the girls back in the day when Help was open and people posted pics of girls from Help, how many times I've seen guys with girls I've been with. Today not many pics but you all go to the same privi's in centro, just passing the DNA around.
